Purse seines are primarily used to catch Pacific skipjack tuna. Skipjack tuna is also caught in longline, pole-and-line, and troll fisheries. Fishing gear used to catch Pacific skipjack tuna rarely contacts the seafloor so habitat impacts are minimal.
Interactions with protected species such as sea turtles, marine mammals, and seabirds in these fisheries are rare and survival rates are estimated to be high for all gear types.
Many purse seine fishermen use fish aggregating devices (FADs) to target tunas.
FADs can be drifting, floating or submerged objects deployed and tracked by vessels, including through the use of radio or satellite buoys, for the purpose of aggregating target tuna species.
FADs are also known to attract non-target and bycatch species, including juvenile tunas, sharks, other fish, and occasionally protected species.
Use of FADS is prohibited in certain areas at certain times of the year to regulate fishing effort and reduce bycatch of juvenile tunas.
Longline and purse seine fishermen are trained in safe handling and release techniques for sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals, and they carry and use specific equipment for handling and releasing these animals.
Scientists and managers continue to monitor bycatch in these fisheries through logbooks and fishery observer programs.
Recreational fishery:
Recreational anglers fish for skipjack tuna with troll, rod-and-reel, and handline gear and sometimes by free-diving with spear guns.
Skipjack are the smallest and most abundant of the major commercial tuna species. They have a streamlined body that is mostly without scales. Their backs are dark purple-blue and their lower sides and bellies are silver with four to six dark bands. Skipjack can live as long as eight to 10 years.
They are found mainly in the tropical areas of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, with the greatest abundance seen near the equator. Skipjack usually swim near the surface at night and can dive up to 850 feet during the day. Large schools of adult skipjack tuna often mix with juvenile yellowfin and bigeye tuna. They can breed year-round.
Skipjack are commercially important as the main species of canned tuna. Although tuna do provide food and livelihoods for people, they are more than just seafood. Tuna are a top predator in the marine food chain, maintaining a balance in the ocean environment.
NOTE: the certificate for the yellowfin tuna component of this fishery is currently suspended
These two fisheries were certified as sustainable in November 2012. They’re confined within the 200 mile Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone, and only licensed Maldivian vessels may participate. After tourism, tuna is the country’s major source of income and its primary export.
Skipjack are a highly productive tuna exhibiting great variability in life history characteristics.
Yellowfin are fast-moving and wide-ranging pelagic predators and spend the majority of time in the top 100m but making occasional deep dives to much greater depths.
Both species are harvested by the centuries-old pole and line technique: tuna are attracted to the vessels by live bait thrown into the water (usually small schooling reef fish), and then caught on barbless hooks on fibreglass poles. The tuna are then swung on board where they fall onto the deck, and are immediately put into holds with ice. Larger vessels have up to 18 fishers and smaller ones 10.
