Thank you for sharing this, David. Beautiful and very informative and it's helped me work out a rough itinerary for my planned visit. Sorry for the obnoxious trolls with poor judgement spewing their hate here. The beauty of the world and different cultures is for us all to share and take humble pride in (as opposed to arrogance) and those who feel the need to assert their imagined superiority should scamper off to their Greek political sites as appropriate forums to massage each other's egos. Thumbs up, David, for a quality video.🏆👍

Beautiful country and beautiful city. I paid a short visit to Bitola while spending a holiday in Ohrid and found it absolutely charming. It is one of those cities that make you want to come back again. Perhaps, some time when it's not so hot, I could stay in Bitola for a few days and take long refreshing walks in the Pelister national park. Greetings from Russia!

Bitola is one of the fairest of all cities. It lies at the valley mouth and spills out into wide plains, shading itself with poplar groves; and till full summer there are snow peaks to be seen beyond the plains. * It is one of those cities which prove to our amazement that we Westerners have never even begun to understand what town-planning means. “Rebecca West” - Англиска писателка, новинар и есеист, напиша за Битола во својата книга - Black Lamb and Grey Falcon. The name of the Town Bitola means Birch = бреза. The name of the tree is a Latinism Betula = birch, in turn of Gallic origin (cf. * betw - bed-wen, "birch" ), connected with of the popular Latinism bidola = бреза The plants of the genus are known in the Germanic countries with the name Birke (German), birch (English) etc., from an Indo-European root * bherəg-, "shining, white" (see Sanskrit bhūrjah and Latin fraxinus) .

The name of the City (Ohrid - Ohrid) in Macedonian is Lychnidos. The name of the City Cevgelija - Гевгелия, in the original Macedonian language is gortynia, Cevgelija - Гевгелия is a Slavic name. "Bitola" formerly the Greek city of Monastiri and before that, Heracleia Lyncestis, where the ancient Greek ruins of the Macedonians still stand, and are now claimed by the Bulgarian-speaking Bulgarians in denial calling themselves "Macedonians". Pity it wasn't liberated in 1913 like Thessaloniki was!
@seeker9674 жыл бұрын
Hey there, its not too late to admit that you are misinformed. In ancient times the area of BItola served to the city of Heraclea, it was founded by Phillip of Macedon. With the fall of the Macedonian empire the city of Heraclea ceased to exist. The Bitola that is today in its current geographical position was founded by Gavril Radomil the son of Tsar Samuil, at that time the cities name was derived from the Old Church Slavonic word ѡ҆би́тѣл҄ь (obitěĺь, meaning "monastery, cloister"). The city of Obitel had a small Greek community (they were actually Vlach who followed the Greek Orthodox church), the Greeks called it according to their version of the name Obitel which was Monastiri meaning the same thing as the Old Church Slavonic name (meaning "Monastery") as the city was know for its monastery. During the fall of Bitola under the Ottomans. The ottomans adopted the Greek version of the name. So the city was officially called Monastiri this name was adopted by the Turks, Jews, Albanians, and other small minorities. With the fall of the ottoman empire the city was renamed to its FIRST and ORIGINAL name Bitola ( the modern Slavic version of the name "Obitel" with the removal of the o prefix). I respect your comment but the original name of modern Bitola situated in its current geographical location was "obitel" . I'm just here to educate :) . Also the city is Macedonian because for centuries this city was inhabited with a majority Macedonian population and is currently within the borders of the Republic of Macedonia. It has importance for many ethnicities (almost every Balkan cultural group) because it used to be the capital of Ottoman Rumelia so therefore many intellectuals lived in the city for socio-economic and political stability but that doesn't give any foreigner the right to manipulate history and say that Bitola is something that it isnt. Stop misleading people and have a nice day.
@adrianwallis34294 жыл бұрын
@@seeker967 I think you are the one who is misinformed. Obitel is Bulgarian (Old Church Slavonic). Your "language" (which you call "Macedonian") is the West Bulgarian dialect, but Bulgarian nonetheless. Don't fool yourself, there was a very large Greek community in Monastiri. The original name was Heraclea Lynkestsis (a Greek name and totally unrelated to your Bulgarian language). Why is it a Greek name if the Macedonians were not Greek? Simply because the Macedonians WERE and still are Greek (like me). We regard you Bulgarian-speaking Slavs as Bulgarians. You hate your true heritage, that is why you insist that you are the descendants of the ancient Greeks like Philip of Macedon and Alexander the Great, not famous Bulgarians like Tzar Samuil.
@seeker9674 жыл бұрын
@@adrianwallis3429 Mate you don't understand crap. Old Church Slavonic ---- it says it in the name the language of the South Slavs used by the church. There wasnt a large Greek community in Bitola or the region that the city is in, the Ottoman register of Bedel-I Askeriye Tax of 1873 says the Manastır vilayet had about 150,000 Macedonians (who followed the Bulgarian Orthodox Church) men (heads of households), 40,000 Turks-Muslim (Turks, Macedonians and Albanians) who are categorized as Turks because they followed the Sunni Islam religion and only 700 Greeks (They are actually Vlach with a very small minority Greeks who are categorized as Greeks because they followed the Greek Orthodox Church) The Ottomans followed the millet system which meant each group was assigned an ethnicity based on their religion so if you are Muslim you are categorized as Turks if you follow the Serbian orthodox church you are categorized as a Serb even though you could be Macedonian or any other group. This is not the only document about the population according to the Russian consul in the Manastir Sanjak (that included the cities of Ohrid Bitola Kicevo Florina-Lerin Prilep) it showed the majority of the population according to the year 1897 had 210 000 who made up a vast majority of 74% of the population being Slavic Exarchists,Slavic Patriarchists,Slavic Muslims who spoke the Old Church Slavonic language. About the name the ancient city of Heraclea has no connection to the development of modern day Bitola. The city started to expand during the 19th century when it became the capital of Ottoman Rumelia. The cultures of other groups larger has always overshadowed the existence of smaller ones the same way modern day Kurds are assimilated within Turkish culture or Vlachs assimilated within the cultures of the countries that rule over them. Just because ethnic groups dont have a country to voice themselves doesnt mean they dont have culture, tradition, music, cuisine, and history and this whole attempt to present the city of Bitola or Southern Macedonia as a place that has "not been liberated" is ridiculous hahhahaah. The constant denial of the rights of the ethnicities has lead to them being kicked out or de-nationalised from their existing culture the same way there are villages like Nivitsa in Greece that we renamed Psarades and the peoples name were hellenized with the addition of os and is, when they speak a language other then Greek shows how some countries are on a constant mission to undermine the human values of identity. This doesnt happen only in Greece it happens in Bulgaria and Serbia. This has lead to the numerous human rights law suits in the European courts of which in all cases the Macedonians have won. I respect your views only if they are on the basis of FACT and not nationalism and racism. Bitola is a Macedonian city with importance for many Balkan groups and this has been preserved with the opening of schools that teach the people their native language, and museums that better explain the diverse history of this city, because I WILL repeat it was a city that housed intellectuals from minority groups in the city that helped shape the history of the many nations of the Balkans.This should not be used as an excuse to undermine the Macedonian identity that has always been here for centuries in high quantities in the city. I dont have all day to talk to you I hope you understand what I wrote to you. Let this be the last comment as I am getting quite tired of reading stupid comments . If you dont understand anything I would advise you to visit the city for yourself and be reassured of what I just said. Have a nice day :) .

Basically it is the same thing... Manastir (monastery) Bitola (monastic family - from "obitel" in church Slavonic language). Through the centuries the form of the name evolved, but kept it's meaning... It's just a translation difference... 1000 years ago, the town had so many churches and monasteries, which where destroyed by the Ottomans around the 14th century.

Actually if you look at the map of the ancient kingdom of Macedon, Bitola then known as Heraclea was part of it. Today there are 0 Greeks living there, not kidding... Now how many Macedonians (the ones you refer to as Slavs) are there in Florina, Edessa, Ptolemadia, Kastoria?? Check the ethnicity stats of Greece... But yeah I guess we fall from Mars in here, came from nowhere...

what you will see in Bitola??You will see slavic people with slavic and serbian roots,with slavic and serbian culture,with slavic and serbian names,speaking slavic and serbian language and calling them selves ''Macedonians''!! Macedonia is a greek word and its name of the northen part of the land of Greece. It happend to border with this slavic land and when Yugoslavia split,they steal this name from their historical neighbourhood greek land,so to make and organise a country,with a historical prestige!! In other cace they would be in the world map like a little fish in the ocean.Nobody would knew sth about them.Very clever plan but not fair.

John f -"what you will see in Bitola??You will see slavic people with slavic and serbian roots,with slavic and serbian culture,with slavic and serbian names,speaking slavic and serbian language and calling them selves "Macedonians....." What will you see in Greece? You will see Hellenised Albanians who deny their past or those who don’t know their past and truly believe they are “Greek”, whatever that may mean today. As you surely know, Athens was almost entirely Albanian before you became a nation and got your first German/Bavarian King in the 1830s. You will also see numerous other integrated minorities including Armenians, Jews (those who survived), Romas, Vlachs, Italians, Aromanians, and many more including Hellenised Turks whose children believe they are ethnically “Greek”. In Northern Greece, you will see ethnic Macedonians, (Slavs to you) most of whom quietly cling to their culture and language (in secret as it is not permitted) plus some who have submitted to pressure and discrimination and now identify as “Greeks”. You will also see Asia Minor formerly Turkish-speaking Pontian prosfiges who were resettled there and had to learn to speak Greek in a hurry, and who displaced the Macedonian-majority residents who lived in the northern towns and villages for centuries. In one generation, they miraculously became Macedonian and are now the descendants or Alexander. Will wonders never cease! To the east in Thrace you will see almost only Turks who still identify as Turks in private, (unlike the assimilated ones who truly believe they are Greeks,) but who must refer to themselves only as Muslims, not Turks because, as we know, there are no minorities in Greece (cough, cough).
