I'm pretty sure that the Eau Rouge / Raidillion complex will be changed for next year. There's already a call to put a more acute bend at Eau Rouge, as now the track is flat out from Eau Rouge to Kemmel and the speeds too high. Another contributing factor are the tarmac run-off areas. But that's for another discussion.
@paulo95045 жыл бұрын
@@lotus95t IMO, it is not the circuit layout that is to blame. The circuit layout is fine. They used to have gravel there but paved it when cars would dig in and roll. When something like this happens, everyone becomes reactive instead of being proactive. There have been some big crashes at Spa over the years and you know why? Because it is a badass fast circuit. The number of fatalities at the Eau Rouge/Raidillion complex has been what at FIA sanctioned events over the years? Bellof was the last guy I remembered being killed there and that was in 1985. FIA has to continue to strive for better cockpit protection though no matter how many advancements they make, racing is always going to be inherently dangerous and reminders of what we saw on Saturday will always be present. It is a dangerous business afterall.
@lotus95t5 жыл бұрын
@@paulo9504 There has been nearly a dozen drivers in various categories killed at Spa since Bellof, with nearly all happening between Eau Rouge to Kemmel. And the reason is, you are going flat out up a hill with no way to see what is ahead of you. On Saturday, when Alesi spun and Boccolacci slowed, Hubert who was right behind them, never saw them until it was too late and he ended up driving off the track. Correa did the same thing and ended up driving into Hubert. An accident like that would never happen at the Rettifilio at Monze, which has a much higher top speed as the drivers can see the whole length of the straight.
@paulo95045 жыл бұрын
@@lotus95tBellof was the last high profile driver in a high profile series to die there. I wasn't really thinking about motorcycle racers, since they get killed everywhere, it seems, historics, or the various low rung touring car series that compete regularly there. Racing is inherently dangerous. People say reconfigure this section and that section but is that the solution or is it a knee jerk reaction? I say remain calm and let the FIA investigate and determine what should be done. If they feel the circuit needs changed, I am sure they will inform the organizers. If the organizers balk, the FIA can revoke their certification of the circuit. As far as I know, none of the F1 drivers have brought up any concerns about the circuit or its safety. So, they must feel it is okay to race on, otherwise they would organize a boycott. These guys also, by and large, love the circuit and accept the risks of not just racing there, but racing in general.

And Correa's feet were dangling outside of the front of his car. That is something has to be looked at as the Dallara-Mecachrome is crash tested to withstand higher impact speed than occurred at Spa.
@psychlops9245 жыл бұрын
The issue with the Hubert crash was that he had already hit the left side of the car at 160+ mph against the tire barriers, and then that same side was hit at 180+ by Correa, after all of the impact absorbing parts of the car had already been destroyed. I’m not sure how you make a tub that can take two consecutive 160+ mph impacts. I’ve heard a lot of people criticize Dallara because the side is a weak point of the tub, but it did hold up against the initial impact.

Despite the advancements made to cars over the years in regards to cockpit protection, regardless if it is Indy Car, F1, F2, Indy Lights, F3, etc., there are probably a million different scenarios or situations a chassis can be subjected to. However, it is very difficult to predict a situation, such as the one we saw Saturday at Spa Francochamps, during the engineering and safety testing process. That is why racing tends to be more reactive than proactive. However, when an incident, like the one with Anthoine Hubert and Juan Manuel Correa, happens, it is important to avoid knee jerk reactions. Important to stay calm, investigate, and determine what needs to be done to prevent something like this from happening again. Neutering circuits with chicanes is usually not the solution.

This year's points battle might be most anticlimactic one in a long time. On one hand you have a points leader who has made a lot of silly and unforced errors throughout the summer (Toronto, Mid-Ohio, Gateway, Portland qualifying). Then you have four guys, who for one reason or another, have been unable to capitalize despite the point leader's best attempt to hand the title to one of them. 🤣 The ROY battle though, has been pretty entertaining. Rosenqvist, Ferrucci, and Herta have been very impressive this season.

@mitchell-wallisforce78595 жыл бұрын
Rahal admitted blame, so all credit to him. He probably just braked a titch too late under braking, and maybe didn't have quite the stopping power he'd have under race conditions. RHR's incident was ridiculous though. Like David said, outta character, but dude. One, it's your teammate. Two, he's got a title on the line. Three, that is a d*ck move in ANY series. Four, I will never forgive you for ending Harvey's race, regardless of how accidental it was.
@lotus95t5 жыл бұрын
So so race, but good to see Power win. Rahal is another driver along with Daly and Andretti who are only in the series because of their last names. Yet again we see how over-rated Rossi is. At no time could he stay with the leaders and only got 3rd because Herta was told to not overtake him. if I was Rossi I'd be worried if Herta moves to the main Andretti team.
@paulo95045 жыл бұрын
Herta's advantage is his engineer who is on loan from Andretti Technologies and is their shock engineer. They have found something at Harding/Steinbrenner that they aren't showing to the mothership. Once he becomes a full fledged member of Andretti Autosport, he will lose that advantage. And Rossi is a beast. Has carried Andretti Autosport this season. RHR, Veach, and Marco have all struggled. Seems there is something amiss at AA this season. I expected a lot more out of RHR.

Any track can cause lap one crashes. Portland is just more likely than most. There was a stretch at Indianapolis between 1973 and 1995 where every fourth year you'd see pace lap (Tom Sneva, Philippe Gache, Roberto Guerrero 92) or first lap crashes.
@cnchess5 жыл бұрын
Let's see, Pocono lost its race for next year because for the past two years the drivers forgot how to handle turn two resulting in expensive bumper car stupidity. Meanwhile, Portland (a city that hates automobiles and everything that they represent) is rewarded with yet another race even though every race held so far had resulted in the best drivers in the world not being able to get through the first turn without crashing all over the place. So, Indycar left Watkins Glen for a flat, dusty race track appended to a drag strip that is too dangerous to make the first turn safely and has now abandoned Pocono for a 3/4 mile D-shaped NASCAR track. The decision making of the leaders of this series is moronic.

Time and time again there is a 1st car pile up because the straight is so wide and the 1st turn so narrow and sharp. No matter how many times at the driver's meeting they talk about caution for T1, someone or ones just go brain dead and look to win it going into T1. Then to make matters worse the restart was more of the same. like everything else in life, when the consequences for your actions and screw ups are severe enough, it stops. But when you just get a slap on the hand it continues. Cause a major accident and it's a mandatory 1 races suspension, cause a 2nd one like Sato is famous for, and it's two suspensions, and a 3rd and you're gone for the season, past the halfway point and it rolls over to the next season. Instantaneously, these driver brain farts stop. Fines don't mean crap, as every driver and or team can and will cover them.
