It was my first time in Korea, and I was at a BBQ place getting food with my GF when they declared Martial Law. Thought nothing of it and saw the videos of the parliament at my hotel. Woke up 3 AM to my parents freaking out telling me to leave the country immediately. And saw that they ended martial law 5 mins ago. Wildest stuff I ever experienced

Korean-Cuban here , living in korea from busan.........its alot to unpack........I feel like I went to university in America and came back and every ok agency we had that helped women and children an those in need was abolished under the current adminstration.....a lot of things have happened here and that's why a good amount of younger koreans are leaving .Like my first thought when martial law was started was my elderly grandparents who live in rural 경상남도. Like so many of my friends and coworkers were like wtf is happening and then the protests started . People are just tired.

When I was growing up in my Korean family of origin... it was all about winning petty arguments, toxicity etc.. after I got married, it was all about putting aside petty personal feeling and really hearing each other out. There was no need for petty arguments because at the end of the day, we usually have the same end goal.

K-pop fans sending death threats for dating is still a thing today. Just 2 months ago, Seunghan antis bullied him out of RIIZE with thousands of death wreaths sent directly to the SM Entertainment building. Interesting thing? Both H.O.T and RIIZE are from the same company. Nothing has changed. :')

21:38 We got similar discourse within the Vietnamese diaspora and Vietnam Nationalists. They get real upset that Vietnamese-Americans still think the old country is 'poor' but there is no denying Vietnam still receives humanitarian aid from around the world. Ok Saigon is now Seoul-lite but so what? Some of us still have extended family living there telling us their realities and hardships, they seem to forget that part the most during arguments. There are constant Vietnamese nationals (with a relative in government, low or high ranking) immigrating to the US, so even their elites who have it great over there are gunning for a spot in the US immigration lottery pool. You can always spot them grocery shopping in all-over-print gucci sweats lmaoooo. They ain't foolin nobody.

Hi David :) Annie here! Ed did a great job explaining the recent 12/3 martial law and the K-government situation in the video, but I wanted to add a bit more context. The movie he mentioned, "12.12: The Day" / "서울의 봄" is a depiction of former military dictator Chun Doo-hwan's presidency. It focuses on the Korean people’s resistance to his military coup, particularly the events in the city of Gwangju, where thousands of students and civilians were shot and tortured by Chun's military fighting for democracy during the Gwangju Uprising. This is why President Yoon has been compared to Chun Doo-hwan, he enforced martial law in 2024, echoing some of Chun's most infamous actions. Like you and Ed mentioned in the video, Yoon's move shocked everyone, including members of his own party, who neither anticipated nor supported it. His actions essentially dragged Korea back to the 1970s and 80s, undermining everything our parents fought for in their struggle for democracy. Fast forward to now, and you’ve probably seen it on people's IG stories, Yoon has been impeached, thanks to the massive pressure from tens of thousands of protesters who demanded a re-vote. Initially, his party walked out of the voting session and boycotted the impeachment process. However, after a week of growing protests and public outrage, seven members of Yoon's party finally broke ranks and supported the impeachment, passing the bill. That said, the fight isn’t over yet. For now, Yoon’s presidency has been suspended, and the Prime Minister is serving as acting president. The next step is for the Constitutional Court to determine whether to permanently remove Yoon from office and prosecute him for treason, crimes related to enforcing martial law, and other allegations (including crimes involving the First Lady). All in all, though, as with politics in most countries, corruption and shady dealings abound. While there are some "clean" politicians, they often lack the power or support to rise to the presidency, which is unfortunate :/

David, Twitter does the same thing that Threads does. Blue checkmark users gets money for interactions, and they also get boosted in the algorithm. I'm all for trying to take both sides in account, but Twitter/X is very right winged now, and I say this as a liberal. The majority of the ads I see are Donald Trump/GOP adjacent shit like liberty coins or freedom coins or whatever. I block a bunch of these ads and right wing related content, but I still get suggested posts and such in my feed.

Came here to say this!! I see liberal things posted from actual accounts due to my personal algorithm BUT i have so many right winged ads and “suggested for you” tweets that I know for a fact i do not interact with (other than muting, blocking, etc). Its frustrating to the point where I want to mute certain words so I don’t see anything related to it at all (liberal or conservative). I don’t want to put myself in an echo chamber on social media but it’s also not where I go for news so yeah, i don’t wanna see shit that pisses me off within 2 scrolls of being on X. I just want to go on there for memes and pop culture stuff. 😅

I make damn good tips during lunch service on the weekends and introduce white folks to some actual Thai food. Unfortunately I don’t keep all my own tips so other servers who are absolute dogshit and lazy share my tips and so does our dishwasher cooks. It’s even throughout the staff. It does take the incentive of being a good server away but because of my experience working at In-N-Out for many years i can’t help but bring good customer service 😭

It is rather evident that many individuals remain completely oblivious to the extent to which South Korea is subjected to external influence, specifically by powerful globalist factions. The current administration, for instance, has resorted to martial law, a desperate measure enacted in response to the overwhelming opposition, which, it must be noted, often serves as the proxy for the covert forces of the so-called "deep state." As for David So, his understanding of his nation's political landscape appears profoundly superficial. Rather than offering insight, he is, regrettably, contributing to the perpetuation of the very narrative that these shadowy elites wish to disseminate, all in pursuit of consolidating their control over the Korean Peninsula. Korean-American currently living in Seoul here. I think it’s important to know both sides and what has really been going on in order to comment on WHY President Yoon would have enacted this. I preface my comments acknowledging that declaring Martial Law was a pretty extreme and chaotic decision, however when I see what has been happening over the term of President Yoon, I see why it happened. The democratic party (opposite of President Yoon’s conservative People Power Party) that has a majority rule of the National Assembly has been holding hostage and unwilling to make partisan decisions to benefit the South Korean people. The leader of the democratic party is Lee Jae Myung, think the Biden or Harris of Korea. What has he done? He’s been investigated for corruption and crimes during his time as a politician. 1. The Democratic Party has gone on a rampage to push budget cuts to impact government legislatures. 183 in favor, 94 against, 1 institution out of 278 enrolled members The Democratic Party holds 175 of the 300 National Assembly seats, 192 this month Current Budget for: Prosecution Special Activity Fund: 8.09 billion won Prosecution Special Expenses: 50.691 billion won Police Special Activity Expenses: 3.167 billion won Board of Audit and Inspection special activity fund: 1.519 billion won Board of Audit and Inspection special expenses: 4.519 billion won The budget cuts that passed reduced all the above’s budget to 0 WON! ZERO!!! They passed to cut ALL funding to the offices that were investigating Lee Jae Myung. * Even during the Moon Jae-in administration (The Obama of Korea) the president everyone sees as the most evil and corrupt, the budget was never brought to 0 won… 2. Representative Lee Jae-myung’s charges and trial situation - Violation of the Public Official Election Act: Lee Jae Myung was charged with spreading and publishing false facts towards his opponents (regarding to the late Director Kim Moon-ki, toward the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport). He was convicted to 1 year in prison, and it will he enforced in 2 years (2024.11.15). - Suspicion of giving preferential treatment in Daejang-dong development: He is currently on trial for allegedly providing preferential treatment to private businesses and causing damage to the city of Seongnam while serving as mayor of Seongnam. - Suspicion of illegal sponsorship of Seongnam FC: Lee Jae Myung was charged with providing conveniences such as permits and licenses in exchange for attracting corporate sponsorship and bribes while serving as mayor of Seongnam. Trial in progress. - Suspicion of Ssangbangwool’s remittance to North Korea: Why did Yoon say the Democratic side are North Korean spies? It’s because Lee Jae Myung was involved in a company Ssangbangwool sending an $8 million remittance to North Korea while serving as governor of Gyeonggi Province. This trial has been postponed. 3. Impeachment of prosecutor who investigated Lee Jae-myung Lee Jae Myung pushed to impeach Prosecutor Gam Baek-shin who was investigating his crimes. 4. Lee Jae-myung's support for North Korea and it’s leaders When people panicked due to the North Korean missile and rocket tests, Lee Jae Myung stated in a press conference “Our predecessors, we must make every effort to ensure that the efforts of our North Korean leaders, Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, are not belittled or damaged.” 5. Many close friends and people involved with and around Lee Jae Myung died, mostly by suicide, after these accusations and indictments were made. It’s no coincidence… you can read more about that here en.namu.wiki/w/이재명%20주변%20인물%20사망%20논란 This is why President Yoon said the democratic party is corrupt, playing games by cutting department budgets and impeaching prosecutors doing their job, serving the interests and supporting a North Korean regime over all of Korea. Martial Law was enacted, but never with the intention to shoot innocent people like the martial law of Chun Doo Hwan, it was a last-ditch resort to wake people up to what is happening. People have gotten incited by words like “conservative”, “dictator”, and “martial law” without thinking and looking at WHY this has happened. Wake up Korea, wake up world.

Hey, another Korean-American living in Seoul here. Like you prefaced, Yoon's decision was extreme (not "pretty" extreme), chaotic, and outright stupid. Please provide credible sources other than a wiki or a South Korean news article (South Korean media are no BBC or Al Jazeera). Most of your claims are either suspicion, rumors, or an outright conspiracy theory at the moment, thus it's not context; it's misinformation. I don't like Lee Jae Myung either but that has NOTHING to do with the declaration of martial law. Both parties are corrupted. That's what happens when there are just two main parties. All politicians must be scrutinized, not idolized. Lee Jae Myung will get what he deserves hopefully, but let us not get distracted by that. South Korea is a functioning democratic nation, which means all political feuds must be resolved in a democratic manner. Declaring martial law just because the national assembly is ruled by the opposing party is like a baby throwing a tantrum with guns and tanks. It severely undercuts democratic values because the Korean citizens voted for the democratic party to be the ruling party of the assembly. If the national assembly is ruled by the opposing party, the thing to do is to talk, then make a bipartisan deal. Trying to shut down the national assembly is NOT that. ...and the bit about North Korea.. smh I'm just gonna ignore that part. The far right has harped on North Korea and its "spies" for a while but it has gotten worse since Yoon took office. Jesus Christ it's 2024, not 1953. 99.999..% of the Korean population do not support North Korean regime. Let's move on from conspiracy theories. You sound like someone who frequents far right community forums, or is close to someone that does. Get out of your room, have some fresh air. If you work, try talking with your colleagues to get some perspective. These community forums, both right and left-leaning, will eat you alive. And try to stay off of political youtube channels. Cheers and good luck
