I followed the guide and it works fine with my Sony OLED with 4K/60 4:4:4. Initially, I thought 4:4:4 was not working but it turned out to be a older HDMI cable which was not certified to handle UHD (only HD) as I was getting random picture break ups until I replaced it with one which is and the issue disappeared. Just curious, I noticed the resolution, you had it hard set to 4K instead of Auto, this should not matter correct?
@DavidSusiloUnscripted Жыл бұрын
Great! If you use a Sony TV, whether you force 4K or Auto it makes no difference. The biggest problem is when you use “cheapo” TVs and projectors which can make the handshake to take much longer time.

Setting up the 420 today for my new Visio OLED. When the 4K movie starts, it still says HDR in the upper right corner. Not sure what I did wrong? Dolby Atmos is engaged! Picture looks good. I’ll double check my HDMI cable and port. 👍

Dolby Vision is not affected by my settings. It is Dolby’s licensing agreement that DV settings can not be altered. And yes, even with regular HDR10, the HDR logo will still show up, it is merely customized for your display.

A really cool feature to have would be to be able to scan and recognize your TV brand/model/and type and auto adjust or make recommendation settings. If not doable, at least let you manually enter in your TV info and it just has to access some database somewhere on the internet and retrieve the recommended settings for your TV. If Logitech Harmony remotes can detect thousands of devices and apply the correct functions from their data somewhere, I'm sure Panasonic could do it too.
@harryberry4743 жыл бұрын
Yea Xiong...yeah that would be nice but don't hold your breath. The frequency manufactures put out updates are few and far between. For something like you're suggesting might be a hardware issue too I don't know.

They could easily do it, they're just not willing to put any investment into it. And well, it doesn't seem like they're really making new 4K blu-ray players anymore. Well, they do still make a few... but in terms of price/performance this 4 year old one is still the best.... and also still very pricey. Though not as pricey as most others they make these days which are nothing more than niche gimmicks such as being able to support very specific audio formats and have very specific ports almost no one even uses. 4K blu-ray is already a niche market and they are aiming for a niche of the niche.

Panasonic said it couldn't be adjusted so was getting ready to ship it back for refund when it magically moved to tab 1 which is set 1. Now it has an incredible picture. I was using the PS5 and it did a pretty good job, but what bothered me was that it didn’t have HDR 10+ or Dolby Vision. So I went down the rabbit hole of getting a 4K player. I have a LG OLED 65CXAUA, Sonos Arc, 2 x Sonos ERA 300 (rears), and the Mini Sub (don’t like the look of the regular one). Your settings worked perfectly! Plays Dolby Vision by default. Thanks for the tips. I just bought the UB820 on sale for $399. I just upgraded myself from the sony x-700. The panasonic gets delivered today and I plan on watching a 4k disc right as its set up :D. How have you liked the differences between the sony and panasonic? Are they noticeable to justify the $250 difference in price? This is definitely a purchase I hid from the lady as we just bought an LG G1, which she was said ENOUGH BUYING! But she loves the TV so hopefully she will like the new 4k player as well :).
@AKSBSU2 жыл бұрын
@@Handsx The upgrade to the Panasonic was worth it to me for a few reasons. Getting it at $100 off was also nice start. The most obvious reason for this upgrade is probably the Panasonic is more advanced and higher quality technically and supports more features and formats. My OLED also supports most formats, including HDR-10+ and Dolby Vision, which I didn't get with the lower end player. I'm in a situation that I can afford above a budget model. Finally, I knew the relative I gave my old player to would get a lot of enjoyment out of it but is stubborn as a mule and would have never bought one herself. I'm pretty happy with the upgrade, and to significantly improve upon what I have now you'd probably have to go into the thousand to thousands of dollars range, which is beyond what I think is necessary for my purposes.
@Handsx2 жыл бұрын
@@AKSBSU The Sony will be going in our bedroom where the old 4k tv will go, so I need another player either way. It'll be interesting to see how well the HDR optimizer does for tone mapping vs the LG G1 tone mapping. Will have to try both. I wish I could take advantage of the audio but I currently only have a 2.0 setup with a stereo amp and kef bookshelf speakers. I use an optical out from the tv so unfortunately I think there will be some transcoding from the 4k player to tv to amp. I wish the Panasonic had a coaxial digital out like the Sony player, but oh well! Not a huge loss.

I have to point out, and I tested with both my UB9000 and UB820 players, if you change the Deep Color Output from YCbCr from (Auto) to YCbCr (4:4:4), suggested at about 2:13 in the video, you no longer will be able to view Netflix in HDR nor use Panasonic's HDR Optimizer. I was on Auto previously before watching this vid and once I switched settings HDR was no longer available. With some trouble shooting I figured this out. Of course this is Netflix and streaming (not 4K disc quality) so I certainly plan to switch back to 4:4:4 when watching 4k discs as you suggest. Just wanted to point that out (as I like using the HDR optimizer for Netflix and Amazon Prime on these players). Thanks for video!

However as far as the audio, I have this player-which I love-hooked up to a 5 channel surround system with an Onkyo amplifier that controls all the sound through the 5 speakers plus a sub woofer. . So looking thorough all three sets of manuals can get really confusing for us not techies out here. I still have to play with the amp controls to get the best sound and once that happens, it is great. And anyone who reads this that thinks that streaming on a 8x4 inch phone screen is great has never had true video outside of a movie theater. Good vid David. I have an older player , a UB 900 going to a Sony 65" X9000F. I found I could have some freezing/picture break up , which many forums said was due to the player's 4:4:4 12 bit setting ( 4K blu ray is a 10 bit technology ) , still seems to work on Panasonic TV's fine. Anyway, I changed my settings to the 4:2:0 format and these problems disappeared. Still looks great. I was wondering if Panasonic have fixed this with their new players, I notice their setup menu has changed slightly. Thanks.
@DavidSusiloUnscripted3 жыл бұрын
It is true when the cable and/or the display can’t handle the 4:4:4 signal. If you are using 4:2:0, it means you’re not using the Panasonic Chroma Upsampler technology.

4:4:4 12 bit setting with HDR require HDMI 2.0 that support bandwidth of 13,37 Mbps, so the TV needs a HDMI board supporting the maximum bit rate of 18Mbps. Early 4K TV might not support that bandwidth. You can change the colour mode to 4:2:2. 4:2:2 still support HDR.

In other words are settings the same for 1080P blu ray movies too or do the settings have to be changed every time you put in a different format 4k to blu ray and back? Do settings have to be adjusted continuously depending on the format. I'd like to have a player I don't continuously have to mess with. Very well done "how to" thanks. I desperately need a reliable player that is well built, my current player is a LG UP970 and it makes so much noise when playing 4K discs I can't wait to throw it in the trash.Honestly I never played too many 4K discs on it until lately so I didn't realize how bad it is (noise wise).

If you dont believe me More here: www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00151969 or do some test your own. Try 1080 and try 4k and you will see differences.

I'm using an Epson 2250 projector (2700 lumens, 1080P resolution). When playing a 4k movie, which Panasonic (ub420) setting do you think would look better: 1. Panasonic set to 1080P output (let the Panasonic process the picture) 2. Panasonic set to 4k (4:4:4) output (the Epson would have to downconvert the 4k to 1080P). I would think the first option looks the best.

I wanted the first 4K movie I watched to be my all time favourite The Fast and the Furious, I have it on DVD and watched it like 20 times but wasnt the best quality so wanted to upgrade. Just set the player up with these settings and started the movie, looks 10 times better. The movie has some longer scenes. Anyway if anyone happens to read this, treat yourself to 1 of these players. @hoapat4247 so for clarification, what is the setting 4:4:4 for then? When should it be used?
@DavidSusiloUnscripted2 жыл бұрын
@johnnieboy66 I have to remove hoapat’s half-truth misinformation. 1. The disc is in 4:2:0 BUT this player’s ability to do chroma upsampling is one of the reasons this player won many awards. Yes the TV will upsample the 4:2:0 to 4:4:4 BUT more often than not, the 4:2:0 to 4:4:4 chroma upsampling is done BEST by the 420/820/9000 2. Using HDMI 2.1 for this player is NOT going to improve anything. The maximum bitrate of this player (and AppleTV 4K) is at 17.8 gbps. Using either an 18gbps cable or 48gbps cable is not going to change the quality at all.

Hi David! Thanks a lot for sharing. Two questions... 1) A question about the HDR TV type in the settings - OLED is set to 1000 nits / does it make sense to select a different mode like LCD for new OLEDs like my G4? So I'm castrating my G4 by setting OLED in the menu! How do you do that? 2) With HDR plus/10 content, you can set the HDR optimizer while the film is playing. If you have it on and set to standard, should you then switch off Dynamic Tone Mapping in the TV menu? Or in General - paired the player with a Brand new lg oled g4 / i think i dont Need the hdr optimizer or im wrong? Merry Christmas to everyone
@Michael.Talbot9 күн бұрын
You will need the optimizer on because a 4k Bluray can output at around 4000 nits so it will wash the image out. As for your other questions just play around with it but on this input i would trust the player more than the TV.
@jurgenrittenauer26178 күн бұрын
@@Michael.Talbotthanks. thanks! I Must say After Hours of Testing. Oled is limited as 1000 nits and lcd to 1500 Nits thats it. So new oled gets much brighter. So with Harry potter it Looks so much better with the lg Dynamic Tone Mapping. If i use the optimierter i cant See Details Specially in bright scenes. So Strong recommondation for all with a new oled- dont use the optimizer. This is a 6 years Old Software. My 2 Cents I think new lg oled g4 Dynamic Tone Mapping > hdr optimizer Optimizer will limit it to 1000(oled Mode) or 1500nits (lcd Mode) I compared lot of Harry potter 1 bright scenes and hdr off and lg dtm is the best picture and the brightest
@Michael.Talbot8 күн бұрын
@@jurgenrittenauer2617 You will still need hdr optimizer on because no tv can display 4000 nits full screen, TVs are usually rated by a 10% window for bright rooms. Like i said just play around with the settings to find what's best for you, but trust the player not the TV. Brighter is not better it can wash out the PQ and look bad in a dark room.
@jurgenrittenauer26178 күн бұрын
@@Michael.Talbotok whats your recommondation? Set it off on lg cause Double dtm? And oled(1000 nits) or max lcd (1500 nits)
@Michael.Talbot8 күн бұрын
@@jurgenrittenauer2617 I would turn the G4 dtm off and put the player to the highest LCD setting and work down ignoring the lowest (projector). I think you will end up seeing the oled setting the is most accurate with the hdr optimizer on in a dark / low light room. But the highest LCD setting will still be accurate, i would just play around with it because it is a great chip.
