Hello Mr. The Day. I have some questions: 1. What DAW are you using? 2. Are plugins generally universally compatible with the various DAWs around? I have a synth I impulse purchases as a self-birthday gift, and I was gonna try recording some stuff with Cakewalk. Terrible mistake?

1. In this video and probably for most of the series I'm using FL Studio--I've used it for over 20 years, so it's really fast for me; I find it great for getting ideas out quickly. I also use Cockos Reaper for more traditional band recording/mixing, and trying to learn Ableton Live whenever I get a chance. 2. Most plugins out there are in VST format, which most--if not all--DAWs can use. The thing to be careful with is Win/Mac compatibility. Some plugins only work with one or the other. There are also .AAX plugins which are for Pro Tools only, but those are usually included with VSTs, and not standalone. I've only seen a couple plugins that are Pro Tools stand alone (then again, I'm not looking for them). As to your impulse buy and question: never a mistake! Start recording! 🙂I remember Cakewalk being huge back in the day, but haven't heard much about it lately, but whatever DAW works for you, go for it! Only thing I would consider is there are probably more DAW-specific tutorials for FL Studio or Abelton Live if you ever need help. Likewise, if you're on Mac, Logic Pro is pretty much the de facto standard amongst pro producers, so that's another one to look into with a lot of rich tutorials out there. But hey, start with what you have, and when you're ready to upgrade, almost every DAW has a trial period to try out and see what feels natural to you.
