I remember buying an iPhone just to play this game they released only the first half of the game, and then like 6 months later the second half, I think in total it's like 60 hours or so but there's tonnes of after game content that you can do, I liked the chests that were chained, having to remember their locations and being able to unlock them based on the keys you had. Almost like the evil within and opening lockers

Fantasian is amazing, and anyone who enjoyed the PS1 or PS2 era of Final Fantasy games should like it as well. The real-life diorama fields have this great effect of being unique while also evoking a sense of nostalgia for the pre-rendered backgrounds of that time. I was saved by a random commenter somewhere who pointed out that you could just buy a used Apple TV and play it with a controller on a TV. It was great in 2021 that way, but I don't think many other people got that memo, judging by all these videos saying they tried it on an iPad or couldn't play it because it didn't work with a controller. I'm really happy that it's going to reach a wider audience now though, because it really deserves it. And I'm also excited to play it again with some new features like voice acting. On another note, this came out (fully) on Apple Arcade the same year as Bravely Default II and Shin Megami Tensei V. I'm all for more options to make it more accessible to more people, but for me that was definitely the year of "who said turn-based RPGs can't be hard!"

I will definitely be getting this for the Switch and playing it again just for all of the enhancements it has over the Apple Arcade version that I also played and very much enjoyed. Which in fact did have controller support itself and that is how I played most of my playthrough. A Nintendo Switch Pro controller paired up with my iPad. Worked just fine.

Last year I bought the Pixel Remasters for my phone after a lot of hemming and hawing. I got it on my phone because it was 10 bucks less than the console version. Then, after a few months of playing the heck out of these six games, I decided I wanted a physical copy and saved up 100 bucks to get it second hand. No regrets: I LOVE Final Fantasy; favorite series. Than they rereleased it, so I'm a bit salty about that. However, after playing though the games on my phone, I really, really considered getting a subscription to apple arcade just to be able to play Fantasian. Luckily, I did not get the subscription because I was playing Tears of the Kingdom, and when I saw in the Nintendo Direct around the time that Fantasian was coming to console, I jumped out of my body with excitement. I immediately preordered two games: DQ 3 HD2D and Fantasian. Life is good, and patience truly is a virtue.

Literally the only phone game that kept me stuck to my phone. LOVED the "technical pseudo" class customization via sphere grid thanks to being able to re-spec characters. It was awesome to see how characters basically fit at least like...3 archetypes like with Leo being able to be Warrior, Thief, and a Tank. BUT that's incredible that they have such awesome QOL! Unngh, I stopped right before the final dungeon in on the phone because I wanted to do all the additional optional quests/dungeons, so if I were to get it again down the line, haha...well I guess I'd have to replay all of that lol. The control changing with the camera is unfortunate since yeah, before you just added a pin where you wanted to run to and it would auto-path to that location which was nice.

This game is really coming out at a tough time. After the releases of dragon quest 3 and metaphor I dont have the capacity for another long jrpg :( Going to the list though bc this seems like a must play for fans of jrpgs I love the camera switches from how they look but it makes sense that it got annoying for you. Fixed camera angles with a smoother transitions is a very interesting design and nice nod to the oldschool games Waited YEARS for the next mistwalker console hit after The Last Story. So glad they switch up their mobile only releases of the last years even if its for a port Great video! Thanks for the review

I’ve spent a lot this year on JRPGs and other games, so at the moment I’m saving my money for Xmas gifts to family. I do think this game will sell more if it had come out earlier in the year. It’s a shame it’s coming out so late in the year. There’s been quite a few excellent JRPGs this year like Visions of Mana, Metaphore, Dragon Quest 3, Romancing saga 2, and YsX which have all released within the space of a few months. I’ll definitely pick this one up at some point as it’s by Sakaguchi and he helped make my favorite game of all time:ff6. He’s also stated that he drew a lot of inspiration from that game when he made Fantasian. I hope it does well.

10 hours in and loving it. The Dimengeon is possibly the best take on random encounters I've seen as of yet. The game feels so 90s, even in its faults. I remember having to adjust the character moving traversing many a pre-rendered background back in the day, because up was suddenly down and left. lol It's a shame it came to mobile first, though. There are people unwilling to give it a go, due to the stigma around mobile games.

Do love this dimension mechanic, pre-battle escaping, then sure, it all catching up to you, but only making the AOEs hit so beautifully hard. Like Super Mario RPG remake? That is interesting, each character getting that background.

The memories and letters a player discovers while playing Lost Odyssey were excellent. I wrote Mistwalker to thank them for the time and attention they put into that writing. If Fantasian's are anywhere near as well written, that is definitely a point in its favor.

the battle looks fun! Love how each char attacks differently. Can make each battle feel unique. wish it had objective pointers though (thanks for pointing that out) don't have time these days to aimlessly explore for the next objective marker like I did when I played RPGs as a kid. I'm one of the five people who played through and enjoyed the mobile version. It looks fantastic on a larger screen, but I can't imagine the targeting and navigation without a touch screen. Those camera pans would give me a headache so fast.

Bro! That dimension mechanic looks amazing. I have to admit, the art style isn't really my favorite. Not bad or anything, just not so much my thing. However, as a huge fan of the old-school FF games (VI and IX being my top choices) this definitely seems like something I need to check out. 7:10 whoa that's awesome! Did a quick look and this time those memories are penned by someone else and not Kiyoshi Shigematsu who penned that part in Lost Odyssey. Writing credits are Hironobu Sakaguchi, Atsuhiro Tomioka, Masaru Hatano really curious who did them. Sakaguchi has said that he wants to do a part 2 to this game. Game is not available on Steam for me till another 18 hours but still $49.99 is kinda steep for a mobile upgrade but if you get it off Instant Gaming it's $40.45. A bit better I'd prefer if it was $30-$35. I don't want to support Nintendo nor Sony but I want to support Sakaguchi for physical I dunno what to decide. I'm heavily leaning digital for now on Steam.

I only ever played part one. It was so good. And boy am I glad they added an easier mode because let me tell you it was hard. I’m used to hard rpgs I played all ps1 era games that are difficult by today’s standards. But tbis was hard hard. The boss battles were especially a terror to beat. Picking this up later this week.

I actually dnt like frustrating my brain wondering where to go & who to talk too, I like the markers so if I decide to do a sub-quest I dnt have to cry about where to go next. The option menu should have all these things toggled so persons can decide if they want markers on or off. Does this game has summons?

The control issue just comes part and parcel with using 3D-style analogue controls on pre-rendered style backgrounds. I don’t think it’s avoidable. Capcom faced the same problem when adding modern controls to RE1 Remake, RE 0, and Onimusha. It doesn’t have anything to do with the game being on Apple Arcade - because Fantasian has always had gamepad support.

Amazon is reporting this as shipped and on track to be delivered tomorrow at 8 PM. I am currently playing Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective via a last-minute Black Friday Sale. I should be able to finish this weekend and start up Fantasian by Sun or Mon. David, about how long did it take you to clear the main story quest for Fantasian along with midgame side quests? Howlongtobeat is reporting 20 hours for main quest but 60 for main+side content, but they also seem to have very limited reported data. Is the game overflowing with side content?
