Tom, formerly of XSEED, here. I just wanted to issue something of a correction (inasmuch as I'm able to, since I left XSEED in 2018 and can't really say any of this for certain, but still!). One of XSEED's founders did indeed move over to GungHo a long while back, so XSEED and GungHo had (and presumably still have) a really solid relationship with one another. And for a while, a few XSEED employees followed him over there. But AFAIK, most if not all of them left GungHo at this point? There may only be one single former XSEED member over there now, and if there's more than that, it's no more than like... 3 people, maybe? Either way, it's not like individuals within XSEED own the rights to XSEED's translations of old Falcom games from that era. To be frank, even XSEED doesn't own the rights to XSEED's old translations of Falcom games from that era -- Falcom does! Falcom could've let XSEED publish the game with those old translations, or even given them to NISA to publish (with or without XSEED's approval). Instead, they chose to let GungHo handle publishing, for whatever reason. Knowing Falcom, I'm pretty sure it's just because... that's what Falcom does! They play the field. If a new company comes along and wants to try publishing their stuff overseas, they're very likely to just... let them. I don't think Falcom does exclusive partnerships with overseas publishers -- it's always decided on a game-by-game basis, and the tides just seem to have turned toward GungHo this time around. Maybe GungHo offered them a ton of money for it, or even helped fund the development of the game -- who knows? Either way, it's very likely it'll use XSEED's old translation, albeit probably with an extra editing pass for good measure (and to clean it up for additional voice recording and such). That would be my guess, anyway. And I'm sure XSEED has given their blessing for this, even though they technically wouldn't have had to. Anyway, this is all just supposition on my part, since again, I haven't worked there since 2018. But I felt it was worth noting, at least.

Hi Tom! Great to have you here, and thank you so much for your dedication to the Trails series as well as your clarification insofar as what's going on here! It really does seem strange to me that for a series as lore rich as Trails, Falcom should want to keep the same publisher for continuity and consistency throughout the translations. Very odd, but thanks again for the insight!

@@davidvinc Falcom has never seemed to be too concerned with that, as I guess they figure (mostly correctly) that companies such as XSEED, NISA, and GungHo are more or less on the same level in terms of localization quality, and (again, correctly) will likely share notes with one another to ensure the series remains relatively consistent in tone and terminology (I happen to know for a fact that there exists a "Trails bible" with a massive encyclopedia of terminology and notes, which has been passed from localizer to localizer across companies and consistently added to over the years). There are some hiccups in the early days with each localization team, of course -- as was proven with the original localization of Ys VIII, for example -- but those seem to have mostly been ironed out over time, and I don't think the series has suffered much from being passed around. I should note, though, that while I appreciate your kind words, I myself don't exactly have much dedication to the Trails series (TBH, I don't even like the Trails games particularly much, with Cold Steel 1 being the first Falcom game I ever played that I actively DISliked!). But when I worked on Trails titles in the past (including Cold Steel 1), I made sure to respect the source material and take great care in my work, since I knew the series had some pretty dedicated fans and I didn't want to do them dirty... both on general principle, and for my own safety! Heheh. ;) If anyone XSEED from those days deserves credit for really making Trails shine, it's the localizer formerly known as Brittany (she's changed her name recently, though I can't recall off-hand what it is now). She was, and AFAIK still is, the ultimate Trails consultant, and was the original author of the Trails bible. While I can't exactly say no one has done more for the series' English-language success than she has, since a lot of people have devoted hundreds upon hundreds of hours to localizing the text, she definitely comes pretty damn close, and is very much the face I associate most with the series' English-language adaptation and -- by proxy -- its English-language success. Trails simply wouldn't be what it is today without her.

I hope they stick with the XSeed translation of Trails in the Sky. IMO the one of the main reasons Estelle and the Sky arc in general is so beloved is the fabulous translation and punch up done by XSeed with the game's script and dialog. There are so many funny and clever bits of dialog that really bring the characters to life in Sky compared to the blandness of later entries like Trails of Cold Steel 3-4 that I assume were done by a different team.

@@acidwizard6528 Yeah, Brittany Avery (now called Leona Renee) and Jessica Chavez did an amazing job. Trails in the Sky is one of if not the best example of what a good localization looks like. Capturing the intent of the original script but writing it in a way that's appealing to a western audience, and done professionally without injecting anything that will break your immersion.

I'm not a fan of NISA, but if the game releases on a specific date, they typically ship your limited edition around the release date (and sometimes a few days early). With LRG, the game will come out, let's say, September 2025, and they won't actually ship your limited edition until 6 months later... So it's either get the regular edition and play on release, or get the limited edition and wait a while to play... Also, their limited edition is often gimmicky and the crap you get for the extra 50$-60$ you pay is really not worth it...

Well as long as they can carry the game and Falcom doesn't limit physical to just Amazon I'll just pre-order the standard edition at Gamestop and take a walk up to the store (hour and half or so there and back) on release day so I can at least make sure I have the game day 1...I stopped with the CEs with Reverie due to the NISA store screwing up that order and a previous one where I had to wait multiple days after release even though I went with the best shipping option which should've gotten it to me day 1...pretty much why i also don't want to use Amazon or any mail services for games as that happens with them occasionally too (especially near holiday season) so unless I can only get the game physically via mail service I'll just pre-order at gamestop instead or even consider digital (don't really like going digital though, would rather own my copy of the game and not need to worry about them taking it away from me at some time...granted even with physical version with patches they may be able to screw you over and 'take it' from you by making a patch that locks your access from it I guess...granted you can always just delete all relevant data and go back to the 1.0 version of the game and hope there's no major game breaking glitches in that version (granted any dlc you buy is fucked) and then keep your console offline forever after that to avoid automatic updates)...ideally though the politicians or judges in office stop the BS and just pass a law/state in a judicial decision that 'that digital copies of video games are the property of that customer and they own it, they do not however own the IP of the game/series and cannot duplicate it for the purposes of selling it and the only allowance of duplicating it is for that person's personal use' which would more or less stop this BS of 'you own a limited digital license (hell even discs get the pop up and unlike digital copies we can't say no to any EULAs until after purchase and once we open them most stores won't take them back full price unless the game itself had a glaring issue) that can be taken away from you as we see fit' nonsense that currently is going on.

I did own FC and SC on the PSP but XSeed games back then never ported over the 3rd and final sky game to it so I had to either play all 3 games in Japanese on the PSP or play the PS4/PS3 ports of the game which BOTH are out of Print. While you CAN paly the PS3 versions of FC to the 3rd on the PS3/PS4 via PSN their only in Japanese and in the case of PS4 ONLY playable via PS+ Via a PAID Subscription not worth it.

GungHo bringing over Trails in the Sky could be pretty bad for PC. I suspect a sharp drop in quality if GungHo decides to do the port inhouse. PH3 did excellent work with Ys and Trails on PC and they went above and beyond in terms of features and optimisation. GungHo might also decide against a GOG release, but as far as I know it was always Falcom themselves who pushed for GOG with the previous games.

I have so much to thank Masayuki Kato for. I've lost loved ones, so I feel for his family. I hope they're doing okay and that, in time, they can get back even a fraction of the joy that he gave to us fans. I'm so happy we're getting a PC release for Sky 1. It'll make my whole life if they remake Sky trilogy AND Crossbell duology. Even hearing the music at the beginning of the video made me want to drop everything, go back, and play them all AGAIN already hahaha -- it's tempting, but I've got over a hundred games in my backlog, so I'll probably wait for the release of the remake. I'm still SO excited. Bummed there's no Ys Memoire: Oath in Felghana on PC... Guess I'll buy the Switch version and "work some magic" to play it on my PC. It seems strange to not have it on PC, just like they didn't with the Phantom Brave remaster. I would've happily bought a PC release. Thanks for the video, David!

Nihon Falcom is such a treasure of a company, in this huge industry, and it is really unfortunate to hear about the passing of Masayuki Kato, may he rest in peace. I'm sure his family and close friends must be proud of what he created and how influential Falcom has been for decades and decades. Without him, there'd be no Nihon Falcom, and no Trails, Ys and so on. These games bring me so much joy, honestly, it doesn't feel real we get so many of their releases lately, and I can't wait for what's coming in 2025. That Sky the 1st trailer was fantastic, the animation is incredible, Estelle drop kicking Joshua is basically why she's so amazing and spontaneously...honest, really, she's just a good protagonist to kick off the whole series and I hope newcomers can enjoy all the craziness as much as I did, when I first discovered these games. And the GOAT Olivier looks great too, oh...those who are yet to meet and know him for the first time ever, I envy them so much :P

“Metaphor” is really, really good. I recommend you give it a try. There might be a “Royal” or “Reloaded” version one day, but I think it will be at least 2-3 years. “SMT V’s” came so fast b/c the vanilla version felt rushed & really dropped the ball with the story & characters in my opinion. But I think even if we do get another “Metaphor” release, it will be worth it. The game is frickin awesome! (Although I wish they would change up the Social Link systems some)

Just clarify Ys Nordics came out on September 2023 the game took more than a year to be localized. So one year is the minimum for me to have a dlc or an improved version. Besides probably we will be getting Nordics Proud until 2026. With the Limited Run the quality of their collector's edition is pretty good. The bad thing is that they make a terrible job keeping up with their release dates and what's even worse you have to pay upfront the full price of the Collectors Edition. I don't mind paying for early for a preorder but most other stores they give an exact release date. Limited Run gives you an estimate that always changes.

First and foremost RIP Mr Kato and thank you for bringing some of my favorite series to fruition. I do believe the GungHo ties to the old Xseed team is probably the most likely reason, but could also be that worldwide release was a big priority for Falcom on this one and Xseed or Nisa just wouldn’t be able to meet the deadline? I really don’t want to see Falcom follow in the footsteps of Atlus but it doesn’t sound like this is the first time they’d taken the approach its more a result of the faster localization time for the west. From what I understand we only got the enhanced versions in the west with previous games like Tokyo Xanadu and Ys 8 because of the longer turn around time. The epilogue section of Xanadu and the solo Dana segments didn’t appear in the original releases from what I understand. I’m glad we will be getting a day one physical but disappointing to hear LRG is doing collectors edition as it will likely be massively overpriced. Last one I think I saw them was for new Sonic game and was like $200-$300 iirc

Well, Ys X Nordics was released in Japan in 2023, and Proud Nordics has been announced for Japan in 2025, so two years will have passed when it launches. I don't like these re releases, but it's really not as crazy as people are making it seem... That game is new only for western audiences, and we are not the center of the world.

First things first, it's sad to hear that someone who brought me so much joy has passed away. I've played every Trails title from Sky 1 for Steam going forward multiple times and have probably several hundre hours, maybe even a thousand among all of them, but I'm also glad to see that a release date for the Sky remake. While the Grandia HD collection had a few kinks here and there on PS5 for me (a handful of crashes and such) it overall seemed to work pretty okay, so I'm confident that it'll work out here too as well as with the Lunar collection - can't wait to finally play it. As for Ys 10 whatever edition: Yeah, I'm not a fan of that. I wasn't a big fan of Persona 5 Royal either, but it offered a good chunk more content and I bought it on sale, so it didn't matter THAT much to me, but it seems like many devs/publishers run out of ideas nowadays and have to resort to weird and unnecessary remasters/enhanced editions like with Last of Us 2 or Horizon Zero Dawn, but this seems even more shameless because the game is, at the point of release, only around a year old.

I'm a little sad to hear about the developer passing away, but I'm also a little confused trying to figure out how that's such bad news for the Trails series - I was under the impression that was almost concluded anyway, since we've had games covering all the major nations in Zemuria. I suppose he might have been planning to extend the series by setting new games in a separate continent that most people in Zemuria weren't aware existed, but that's just speculation.

If you’re referring to David’s community post which links to this video in which he wrote “This could be BAD”, I feel safe in assuming that he was referring to the Atlus-like situation with Ys X Nordics and the updated version Proud Nordics. But as for saying not understanding how the death of the founder of the company could be bad for the series in the future, that’s failing to appreciate the stewardship he most likely provided for the company’s games through the years. Yes, you would hope that in any well run company that new generations of employees are brought through that understand and appreciate the lineage and DNA of the company’s respective series, but there is no guarantee of how well that will go. At any rate, it at the very least is the loss of a very influential man who is the reason this video even exists here on this platform for all the people here to discuss what his company made, so it’s a little improper to say “How is this bad?”. Not being argumentative, just saying.

Masayuki Kato was chairman of the company and afaik hasn't been involved in the day-to-day business since 2007, when Toshihiro Kondo succeeded him as president.

I'm now relieved that I put off YS Nordics for as long as I have, but it still sucks that they're pulling an ATLUS, I feel for the people who already bought the original version. I've been wanting to get back into the trails series for a while, I've only played the cold steel games and haven't touched the franchise since cold steel 4. Trails in the Sky remake sound like the perfect opportunity to jump back in from the very beginning.

Well...guess that's it for me getting collectors editions for the Trails series. Burnt on my first interaction with Limited Run with waiting an eternity for Brigandine and the customer service being apathetic/rude about my complaints about their not adhering to the timeline. At least my wallet will be happy with just getting a standard edition!

Well, regarding Ys, I don't like it, but it not just Ys V that did that in the past. Ys VIII also had additional content for Dana added later on, and so did Tokyo Xanadu as well with all the sub-chapters and the epilogue. I'm not a fan of those practices, but I'm quite sure the Ys X thing is because they want an updated version for Switch 2. I'm actually in the middle of Ys X right now so I didn't like getting those news myself. I also think that this will hurt NISA's sales as well. Why buy the current version if there is an updated version coming at a later date? Trails in the Sky, as much as I like how the remake looks, I think it's a bad time for it. They are going to loose the momentum they gained with Kai no Kiseki, and the worst part is that the people who gets this remake, will end their adventure on a cliffhanger that, as of now, is not confirmed to have a sequel for the remake. Then we have the publisher... The LRG issue, at least for me since I'm European, is that right now we don't have confirmation of an special edition for my region. LRG does limited time pre-orders, which means that they'll probably announce it before anything from Europe is even announced. Also, LRG is famous for having long production times on their special editions that could go from 6 months to even years (I'm not kidding here, I got a few special editions from them that took that long). I would have preferred NISA honestly. As much as I don't like a few things from them (specially how they handle Europe after UK's Brexit), they at least do release their Special editions on their own site. The shareholders meeting also stated a few things that concern me. One was that physical costs are increasing, and some shareholders said to go the digital only route... I hope they don't... They also mentioned they are experimenting using AI for both text and concept art... which I'm also not a fan of... Also the passing of Kato are really bad news for Falcom. Even though some of his practices were questionable. He did create Falcom and his policy has maintained the company afloat for over 40 years. He was pretty much active still, and I worry that without his policies, the company could go down in a few years if they change their methods (which again, have maintained them afloat for years, completely independent and they have created very good games). Anyway, we'll see. Only time will tell how things go in the future. Sorry for the long post :D I'm as verbose as Trails :D

I dont mind waiting for Kai 2 since we're eating good next year with Daybreak 2 then Sky Remake! I was hoping for Kai localization too but I think it's too much, my guess is probably early 2026. By that time we will all be caught up with the Kiseki series in time for Kai 2! I am so excited!

First, it is sad to hear about the passing of Masayuki Kato given that these series have given so much joy to many. I've have generally tried getting the CE of the Trails games, but I may end up settling for the regular edition since it will be more readily available. I generally steer clear of Limited Run and only get regular editions when I do purchase from them. Hmm $149.00 for a CE of lesser quality that arrives in my hands in say 2027? Pass. I hope we don't see another CE of Ys X... if that happens, then we know they are in full on "Atlas" mode.

It's always sad when one of the pioneers leaves us. Rest in peace, Masayuki Kato. Now, I saw the trailer for Trails First, and I'm sure you did, too. I'm surprised that you didn't mention what I think is a key selling point. I was going to give the game a pass when you first revealed it and said it was an action RPG remake, but in the trailer it was revealed that the game is playable as both an action RPG, or a turn-based RPG, and you can even switch between modes if desired. All I have to say is if Falcom can do it, WHY CAN'T SQUARE-ENIX!?

I honestly don't know how to feel about Gungho doing the translation for Trails in the Sky remake hopefully they do a good job. Also did you say Limited Run are doing the physicals, and special editions of Trails in the Sky remake? Fricking terrible. Also couldn't believe Falcom are doing a Ys 10 plus that sucks, but at least I'm holding off on the game since i haven't got that far in the series. That’s sad. I’ve grown up around Ys, even though I never really got to play it until relatively recently. I remember reading about it in magazines back in the 90s and wondering how it was supposed to be pronounced. Anyway, maybe the new version of Ys 10 will come out as DLC for the regular version? I stopped supporting LRG several years ago, so this was bad news. The Atlus move is also concerning. I just bought Ys 10 off amazon, so I returned it since I don't have time to play it any time soon anyway. My biggest hesitance about trails remake is whether they'll be redoing the script and whether we'll have the charm of reopened chest dialogue, and options for voice over language. If not, then I hope they don't skimp on that voice cast.

Nah, that has nothing to do with it. Kato himself didn't directly make these games. He served as Producer up to the end of the Crossbell arc before giving it to Kondo and making himself a "General Producer" instead. From the beginning, Trails was always Kondo's baby.

@@drewtheunspoken3988 Personally I don't buy in to the whole "Trails is ending" thing. Reason being that all of the games we have so far have only been in Western Zemuria. There's an entire East side of the world we haven't seen yet (but keep hearing about) that there's no way they could show in a few more games. It took them 13 games just to cover the West side. And we know from the world map illustration they put out a while back that the East is just as big as the West. It wouldn't make sense to only have 3 or so games cover all of that unless you're telling me the majority of the East is just empty, uninhabited space.
