@@DavidvsFilm Marlene could have lied and said the procedure was complete already and the Ellie had died. I think her saying she 'owed' him compelled her to tell the truth. The dumb part is she knew what Joel was capable of. I don't think she realized Joel & Ellie's relationship had changed.
@morothane1 Жыл бұрын
@@Blaskor314 I remember offhand that Marlene made a comment about how Joel has become attached to her. It’s probably why she expected Joel to not care about Ellie and allow the procedure to continue. It’s probably why she was honest upfront about the procedure, never expecting what she knew Joel was capable of to actually come forth lol. Could be wrong though, and either way your point remains valid.
@uriviashi Жыл бұрын
@@Blaskor314 Fan theories have always pointed to Marlene not knowing just how close Joel and Ellie have become, and that's why she told him plus the fact that she felt like she owed him. But there's also this theory that many players believe which was; Marlene being just another example of the humanity inside you seeking for relief. She knew what she was doing was wrong (but necessary) in her heart and thought Joel was the one person who could understand her, or at least understand why it felt so wrong. She said "I have no other choice" while Joel said "I do". She even went out her way to explain to him why Ellie was so important to her and why she was suffering too. There's no way she didn't think they would have gotten close to each other after so long and after seeing them without Tess who she probably knew Joel was really close to. So it's this conflict within her trying to explain and unconsciously excuse herself (most likely she herself didn't even realize what would telling him bring up) with the only person apart from herself who knew Ellie at least a little more than the rest of the world did. What she did was an irrational thing, a human thing. Brought up by guilt and shame, she even looks nervous and anxious about it. She clearly didn't want Joel to do what he did and she still let the truth out because she knew other people couldn't understand what Ellie dying means. There's no way it was a rational choice. For the rest of the fireflies she's probably just a girl who has a deep connection with Marlene but apart from her name and maybe a little bit of her background they don't know her and had not spent time with her like Joel and Marlene did.

Some people complained the show didn’t have enough zombies and actions. In fact, they forget that the main theme of the Last of Us Part 1 is ‘Love’. The show definitely aligned with the theme. As we can see all different storylines of different characters in the show were based on different kinds of ‘Love’, I think the show really did a great job on that. Part2 on the other hand is about ‘Hatred’ so we will see how it will turn out.

Oh Lord, well I'm worried about Part 2 now lol. Point taken about the zombies action and love, but I guess for someone like me who really didn't know anything, and how heavily they leaned on the infected attacks/threats in the first episodes, I mistook that as the kind of show it was going to be.

Ooooooh that's tough. You have me thinking now about who the "true" guardian should be. Wow, that's trickier than I would have thought, if I take my own preferences and emotion out of it. I'm so used to living in this current environment of family law, my default is to use that language of "what's in the best interest of the child"; if that's the case, I would say Joel. His concern is for Ellie and Ellie alone. Marlene is looking out for the greater whole. Didn’t play the game, and as frustrating as it can be, I loved that the end is somewhat open ended for interpretation of whether it’s happy or not. It’s all perspective. Fireflies want to save the greater population (possibly their own families), but Joel wants to save his family (Ellie). I don’t think anyone can blame a parent for wanting to not sacrifice their kid, but that is the morale dilemma. Also, I think it comes to choice. Ellie wouldn’t be stressed and not feel anything, but she didn’t have the agency to make her own bodily decision to take that risk. The philosophy major in me can just think of so many angles which I love.

What is the rush? This is a show that (from what I understand) has spent $10M PER EPISODE. And while Lord knows I can't make a show that's better, where did $90MILLION dollars go?? Canadian taxes? Add at least 20 minutes to the SEASON FINALE. Show more infected. Add some scenes of Ellie as a little girl with Marlene so we get more on that character, maybe. I understand that shows of this popularity are in an impossible situation, because they'll never please everybody, but this did feel like just another episode, and kinda rushed at the end as well.

It's an ethics exercise. He killed the doctor who was going to kill Ellie. He did not kill the nurses who were not armed. Maureen told him it was the doctor's "theory" they were going to use to kill Ellie. Ellie who among other things incredibly saved his life when he was stabbed. Neill Druckmann asked the game play testers if Joel made the right choice - people without children split 50-50 with kids 100% with Joel. It's pretty simple Ellie wasn't given a choice. They were going to kill her always for others benefit not hers. Standard situation ethics question they have been using since after WWII and the concentration camps. As for Joel killing everyone he is doing what special forces do, dissociate and carry out the mission. They are not people when he is doing that they are obstacles and targets on the way to the mission objective. It's ruthless but so is Maureen starting with using the flash bang device on him and the rifle butt to his head. Minor point Marlene didn't pay him for transporting Ellie. They would have killed him without any problem correct? so he does the same thing to them.

I don't think this is spoiler.... . . . . I watched Sleepy Waffles' reaction to LoU S1E9 and accidentally got a spoiler about Part 2 of the game. Which I won't say. But then I saw an interview with the show writers (Craig?) and he said that they are not following Part 2 of the game yet. I guess Part 2 jumps ahead 5 years, so they're going to fill in those five years with new material.

I love how they used the Ellie actress from the game as her mom. If it's simply her birth circumstances that led to immunity, then I find it hard to believe that she's the only one in the last 20 years. I'm not sure if her being quiet was her sensing her time with Joel was coming to an end, or the uncertainty of her mission finding resolution. I thought that there might be a chance she would have to die for the cure. Joel assulting through the Fireflies was interestingly done. The way it was shot glorified the intent and the mindset vs the violence. After Sam turned, and saving humanity became Ellie's mission, I think she would have chosen the sacrifice, if they had asked. Season 2 will be interesting. While I have enjoyed the pacing, I do think they needed more more Cordyceps, either this last episode or the one before. People seem like the worst thing in the world, almost like getting a cure isn't what's holding humanity back from rebuilding. Maybe that's really what they were going for. If there were a couple in between episodes for traveling and avoiding Cordyceps. Fedra hasnt seemed that badn we really never saw them being "evil." It's still in the top 3 for TV series. I think Andor and Hill House still edge it out.
@user-jt1js5mr3f Жыл бұрын
I think there's definitely a chance others have been born immune, but what a horrible environment for kids to grow up, so the chances are slim they'd ever make it to adulthood. Also, if anyone saw the bite they'd kill you. I think Ellie would have absolutely died for the cure. Especially knowing she could have saved Riley, Tess, and Sam. Joel and Marlene were both wrong for taking her choice, it's a messy situation. Joel knows it too, which is why he lied.

@M that's true about them not surviving or maybe not knowing they're immune because not bit yet. I wonder if she can pass it on to her children? If that is the case, then I want to see a real evil organization that has figured it out and is essentially breeding people who are immune.

Yeah totally, @Jon Cohen, I also find it hard to believe that she is the only one. With regards to her choosing to sacrifice herself, I agree, but I still contend that is irrelevant in Joel's mind. I really do feel like he sees himself as a genuine father figure to her now, and she (even in the "ya grow up quicker" Cordyceps world) is not old enough to make that kind of decision yet. And he clearly sure as hell ain't gonna let anybody else make it for her either lol. In addition, as he said going back to Episode 2, he really doesn't even think it will work. I feel like he's a believer enough now to let them try, but only so long as no harm comes to her. I'm really interested to see where it goes from here.

this season is a string of trolley problems. the games fallout 1 and 2 played a lot with these types of problems. choosing between 2 groups who are neither wholly good or bad. that is why i love scifi writing: once the world changes, what remains of humanity? to the point of the show, every detail and every encounter is important for the final choice. joel needed to be a grieving parent, ellie needed to be an orphan. they needed to be strangers. every encounter shaped them and pays a heavy toll. even the way the story is told matters. because you follow joel, you will forgive, or at least justify, his ruthless actions. the finale offers no clear resolution, that would make the story unremarkable. it puts a mirror to the viewer and show the extent and limits of humanity. great writing

Not to say the show has not done a decent attempt, they really toned down on the violence and infected sadly... And I warn you.. Last of us 2... is going to cause half the audience to give up on the second season as it did with the game due to a particular moment and a complete F U to the fans causing you to go all stockholm syndrome on a particular character... This episode began with a lie and ends with a lie. Both were done out of love. One was selfless, the other selfish. One served to protect Ellie, the other to maintain a relationship whose trust was destroyed in order to be able to continue to be a father to the new Sarah. Just my opinion and it's a long one. No one has to see it the same way. But I'm on Ellie's side even though I love Joel. However, many see and use Ellie's site only to the extent that it justifies Joel's actions. Maria said to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust." And that's exactly what Joel is doing here. Any parent would at least try the same and so would I (but I wouldn't have lied and I would bear the consequences). But Joel is not Ellie's father. He only considers himself to be so, but this is not based on reciprocity. For Ellie, Joel is her only friend and protector, but at eye level. And neither of them would change that. Ellie wouldn't limit her autonomy and independence and Joel wouldn't expect that from her. And then there would no longer be a relationship on the same level. In this respect, they have never called their relationship as father and daughter. Ellie also doesn't seem to like the fact that Joel constantly compares her to his daughter. This clearly comes through in addition to her depression. One really wait for the sentence from her "I'm not her, you know?". Ellie is like a replacement. In this respect, he never has the right to do what he has done, NOR DOES MARLENE. But both know the answer Ellie would give. Why did Joel lie to Ellie in the end? Because he actually knew better and still acted out of selfishness. Marlene, on the other hand, did not tell Ellie what they would do with her so as not to scare her unnecessarily. Marlene doesn't need Ellie's consent either, she would do it against Ellie's will for the world. Therefore, the argument that many bring that Marlene would be afraid Ellie would say "no" is nonsens. This is not decisive for her. Marlene is simply doing the same thing as the Fedra officer in episode 1 did with the infected boy. She also says this in this sense. We didn't tell her anything, she won't be feel fear. Marlene has another thing in common with Ellie. Ellie had to kill her girlfriend and for her it must all have some value. The same goes for Marlene. She had to kill her best friend and for both applies it must not have been in vain. Both lost their friends to the fungus, both had to end their lives. So yes, Marlene is the only one who understands Ellie very well and she knows what Ellie would have wanted. Joel knows that too. An important difference to the game is the feeling you had when you freed Ellie. In the game, on the way to Ellie, you felt like a hero saving your daughter. Here in the series it becomes clear that Joel is not a hero. Supported by the score. Joel is the one who wipes everyone out and extinguishes the hope of saving humanity. People who all just defended themselves here. Joel has not been attacked. He is the aggressor. I think it's good how this is presented here. How Joel is shown as he was for 20 years. Ruthless, unscrupulous, cold-blooded. And if for 20 years he had the reason to be like this so that his brother and Tess could survive, this is now replaced by selfishness. He has rolled through the hospital like a bulldozer. And that Ellie would have wanted this operation is not a question, after what she experienced and had to do. This was her chosen destiny after losing so many people to the fungus. She made a decision on the day Marlene told her about her imunity. Reinforced by the deaths of Riley and all after her. The first and only decision Ellie could ever make about her life. So far, others have always been determined over her live. Joel took that away from her. And not only that, he took away everything she fought for and what she went through. 3 weeks after Riley's death, which she had to cause, Marlene has given her a meaning that could have saved all humanity. Joel gave her a life with survivor guilt multiplied by all humanity. She has to live with the fact that all the people who died for her and will die in the future, died for nothing. Her mother, Riley, Sam and Henry, and if she finds out the truth one day, she will blame herself for the hospital carnage and Marlene's death. All died for her or because of her and all in vain. The argument Ellie is still a child and cannot make this decision is nonsense. Ellie hasn't been a child in her head for a long time. She lives in a world where you grow up quickly. She killed, saved lives, injured people, was almost r*p*d and chopped up. She has made mature decisions several times. The last of these was to stand against Joel and go on with a very grown-up reason. She is the only one who can and should make this decision about her life. Nobody needs to come with the reason that it was not certain that the operation would succeed and that a cure could be produced. Everyone involved believed in it, including Joel. The motives of the characters counts. People like to invent ways that the show or game didn't bring in to justify Joel's actions. In fact, the only thing Joel said was "find someone else". So if it were up to him, another child could die instead of Ellie. Joel has accepted that Ellie brings the cure to the world as a fact. And even if there were other immunes out there, Joel also killed probably the only brain surgeon with that kind of knowledge who could have done such an operation. That was a decision he was not allowed to make for Ellie. No matter if he feels that way, he is not her father. And because Joel knows all this, he ends up lying to Ellie. And Ellie already knows at the moment that he is lying, when she asks if Marlene is ok and he says nothing. She got the same answer when she asked if Joel had killed innocent people. He lies so that he can continue to be her Daddy without consequences for himself. So he takes another decision away from Ellie. Namely, whether she still wants to continue to be connected to him amicably, trustingly. But what is really bad is that when Ellie wants to say him for the first time how she feels, why she wanted to do this and for whom, he interrupted her, bombards her with platitudes and gives her advices that he himself has not followed. He interrupts her so that he does not have to listen any further, so that he can continue to justify his act for himself. She, on the other hand, can't have all his bullshit since the car anymore and finally interrupts him and makes him swear. Ellie's bullshit detector is unbearable. Nevertheless, she chooses him over his lies. He means the world to her and all she has is him. Her greatest fear of ending up alone certainly plays a role. They love each other and would do anything for each other. Or it is rather dependency. In any case, the long-built trust is now gone. The moment Joel swears is also the moment when Ellie knows she would have died in the hospital. I would like to point out a very interesting conversation that took place in the pilot episode between Tommy, Joel and Sarah. This was about love and dependence. Tommy comes into the kitchen and greets Joel and Sarah with a not so nice word. Sarah to Joel: "Oooh, he loves you" Joel: "He is dependent on me. It's not the same." Sarah: "I think it's the same" I think this conversation is very interesting in connection with the dynamic between Joel and Ellie. To what extent is this love. To what extent is it dependence. To what extent do the two things go together? And are Joel and Ellie even on the same page when it comes to that? Or confuse both love with dependence. I also find the conversation between Joel and Ellie questionable in which he tells her that he wanted to kill himself. The conversation itself was okay, but I don't think it's okay to tell her that she's the reason he sees life positively again. He puts even more pressure on Ellie. He made himself dependent on her existence and let her know that. That's not right. She now constantly has in her head how he will feel when she is away. Well, the authors of the game had not thought of a continuation of the game at that time. That's the advantage of the series. They can prepare much better for the upcoming season and thus make everything that comes in part 2 more comprehensible for everyone. This was an excellent but unfortunately much too short episode. The whole series was just great. I'm looking forward to the second season. Ellie not only has the knife from her mother, but also the jacket she lay in as a baby. The giraffe was real. Her name is Nabo or Nobu. Something like that. Ashley Johnson was Ellie's mother here. Quite poetic when Ellie gives birth to Ellie and both look similar. Laura Bailey the voice actor of Abby from TLOU2 was one of the assistant doctors. I've played both games together 20 times and I love them. I love this series. The best I've seen in a long time. I love Joel and Ellie. I feel the need to play again now with the knowledge of what is now added by the series.
