Su is now 22 years old and I am truly amazed at her progress as a vocalist. I have been listening to metal since I was 10 years old and it is very difficult to hit me musically and vocally and babymetal really could do it with me. I am absolutely happy that heavy music was able to break the impasse of recent years. Since Rammstein, I have not been so passionate about music.

Having only listened to them for a few months, I've had the ability to hear the progression of her voice rapidly via the different songs and it truly is incredible how much she has really come into her own. From the light, yet powerful voice of a child to this still high in register, but somehow even more powerful voice of a young adult. I can't compliment her enough on her natural talent and skill, along with everything she has learned and worked on to get where she is. Truly one of my favorite vocalists ever.

There is actually no consensus on whether Suu is singing that verse live or if it is on the backing track. And, if live, whether or not the soundboard is switching in an effect. All are plausible. It sounds essentially identical to the studio track to me. And to my eye, Suu stops lip syncing just before the end of the verse to be ready to come back in with the chorus. The mic is placed up to accommodate the posture. The choreo is very much based on the lyrics in all of Mikiko-sensei's work and this is at a point where the character is exhausted and hiding in a fountain ⛲, slumped over and resigned to their fate of being caught by the heretofore unseen demon. (And bravely asking that it show its form.)

Congratulations on being the first reactors I've seen that spotted Suzuka's technique in those high nasal passages. Most people think that it's some sort of electronic effect but this technique is often used by Japanese singers. There's a technical term for it but I'm damned if I can remember it.

Really interesting and awesome observation. Not convinced totally (because this audio segment is so uniform across performances - but that's so Su-metal). Her pose seemed decidedly unecessary to hide a lip sync, but now I can see it is totally necessary to hide the really weird look of pressing the mic off-angle into her nose.
@jeremyboynowski37844 жыл бұрын
I've had a lot of debates with other Babymetal fans who think that Su doesn't sing that part, but instead lip-syncs it. I was certain she sang it since you obviously see her lips moving (thus the lip-sync'ing), but lip-syncing to me makes no sense at that stage because her face is so hidden that you'd never really see her lips at that angle, especially if you were at the concert and watching live, so it would just be a pointless thing to do in my opinion. So thank you for telling us that! Now at least I have possible proof she isn't lip-syncing!
@cosmoreverb3943 Жыл бұрын
@@perfectmaster42 This is the stance I take. While it is entirely possible she used a technique to make her voice sound like that, its far more reliable to have that section on track, especially since the keyboard is tracked in as well. This isn't to take anything away from her live performance, but I believe this particular part is lip-synced for whichever cameras might catch it. Not that that's important to the overall performance

Good spot with Su's technique for the quiet part, I don't think I've seen anybody even suggest that was what she was doing there and we have always assumed it was either an effect on the mic or that that part was pre-recorded, but what you said makes so much sense given how she positions her head and holds the mic whenever she sings that part of this song. Su does pre-record some harmonies that are on the backing track along with additional instruments (like the piano you heard) and any additional growls and screams etc. BABYMETAL were the youngest average age female band ever to headline at the Budokan, it is a very prestigious venue originally built as a martial arts arena for the 1964 Olympics and that is still it's main purpose, which is why the audience are all around and on several different levels. The Beatles were the first band to play there.

The Kami Band could vary; they started supporting Babymetal about two years in. The guys that you may have seen dressed as skeletons early on were actors miming to pre-recorded tapes; any solo singing from Su or responses from Yui and Moa were live though. The Kami band (until the 2019-2020 N America and Europe tours when the Western Kamis kicked in) always consisted of BOH on bass guitars, Hideki Aoyama on drums, and two lead guitars selected from Mikio Fujioka - who tragically died in January 2018 following a freak stargazing accident, Takayoshi Ohmura and Leda Cygnus. For various specials pianists/keyboardists, string ensemble, etc would be brought in.

Another great reaction! A few answers for you: 1. The Kami Band, as someone else mentioned, is actually a changing session band though a few members such as BOH (the bassist) and Hideki Aoyama (the drummer) are regularly present. BOH and former guitarist Mikio Fujioka (who passed away) had their own group known as the Kari Band; the group is still around and just released a new album this year I believe. BOH also as worked with former Kami Band guitarist ISAO on a collaboration album with a Japanese violinist. I'll post the links once I am at my computer. They also added a second Kami Band (referred to by fans as Kamis of the West) to assist BABYMETAL's US and European tour last year. The Kami Band solos disappeared in 2018 but have made a brief appearance in 2019 with the song Kagerou. I assume this was done so the focus could be brought back to Su-metal and Moametal after Yui's departure and Mikio's death, and that hopefully the Kami Band will begin to have more a presence once more. 2. This song is a Su-metal solo; the other two are not present. This is so the other two could rest. Moametal and Yuimetal would then perform as Black BABYMETAL (a duo) while Su-metal rests. I recommend listening to Onedari Daisakusen. Unfortunately Black BABYMETAL ended after Yui's departure. 3. It has been assumed that Su-metal used autotune during the bridge. If you are correct about her using her nose for the sound affect, I'd happily stand corrected!

Even synthesizers still have a stigma in many circles. Wasn’t sure where these gents’ opinions lie, tho it seems we may be witnessing them learning to accept such things. When you struggle to make music, it’s all about being live. Then you realize the audience only wants the struggle indirectly, they also want a performance, flashy lights, grimace (real or not), larger than life to reach the people in the back etc ...

Glas that you picked up on the eerie atmosphere. The lyrics are bit of a departure from BABYMETAL's usual positive and uplifting themes. They are about a person being trapped in a recurring nightmare, finally giving up hope of escaping the mysterious presence that's closing in on them. There are different members to the Kami Band but that right there has one of their best and most recognizable formations. The guy playing the 6 string bass is BOH, Hideiki Aoyama is the drummer, Takayoshi Ohmura is playing the golden guitar (although typically he uses a pink guitar) and Leda Cygnus is playing the dark blue guitar. Another popular and love member of band was a guitarist named Mikio Fujioka who passed away in an accident in early 2018, he was as talented as this two guys and you can see on plenty of Babymetal videos so fans have fond memories of him. There have been other members in the past and even now they would use different members on tours depending on availability, I assume, as some of this guys have other bands or projects. I know for certain there's another drummer, another guitarist and I can assume they have back up for everyone if the main line up isn't available. All in all they only use very talented musicians and even their choreographer is recognized and quite popular. So like you can appreciate the production values and talent they reunited is outstanding and part of why their concerts are so amazing, even in the small venues just having those members as the Kami Band make for amazing concerts.

Producer Koba conceived the band for young Suzuka knowing her constant power and piercing tone would cut thru a cacophony of metal, but had to wait til she was old (12) to snag her from her previous band playing stadiums (“Karen Girl’s”). He, Su, & Moa are the constants. Yui was originally Moa’s partner but was injured after 7 years (2017) and couldn’t recover (they waited a hopeful year). The Kami band are individually famous for obvious reasons. The most constant lineup was Hideki Aoyama on drums, Boh on Bass, Takayoshi Ohmura on glitter guit, and his mentor Mikio Fujioka (RiP 2018) on guitar. This show (Budokan 2014) featured Leda on the dark guitar. Other regulars include Yuya Maeta on drums, Ikuo on bass, and 8stringer Isao both early & late in BM’s career. Lately they’ve used Galactic Empire as their international backing band. These guys all have multiple bands & projects worth tracking down. Isao in Fuki Commune (Fuki of Unlucky Morpheus & Doll&Boxx), Mikio doing Allan Holdsworth tributes & teaching at Musicians institute, Takayoshi supporting young musicians like ESP’s Yoyo in China and old musicians like Marty Friedman, all of them doing Takayoshi ‘s annual BDay party (hosted by Gacharic Spin, which is backing band for Doll$Boxx), on & on Btw, they have more songwriters than musicians. And with the exceptions of Road of Resistance (Totman & Lee), ijime, dame, zettai (Christopher Amott on alternate Nemesis mix), and No Rain, No Rainbow (Leda, honoring X Japan), no one knows who does the studio work.

And again, they were already successful careers, it was a “subgroup” for a while BEFore it got the funding. ) But he did get it funded. Thru the roof! They’re musicians for $. They took it seriously tho, discussed that they weren’t holding back for “girls”, and put a lot into the performances too (drummers faces, Boh jumping, Ohmura all of the above, etc)

Are those the musicians who play with them all the time? Mostly. (short answer) Babymetal started as a subgroup of an Idol Group. They had no live band at first. They did concerts with all or part pre-recorded music until they had the Kami Band full time starting in 2014. Also that is not the first iteration of the Kami Band. But when they went full time that was mostly the group. They switch out guitarists sometimes. Also in 2019 they added an American Kami band. They're great too. I guess they didn't want to tour anymore outside their country. The Americans did the 2019 tour in Europe and America. They did a song with both Kami bands. A lot of groups have a band. Babymetal has had both 0 and 2 bands. :)

Always like to tell this little side note when someone says something like you did at 6:32 about her voice cutting through the band. When the Kami's were brought in they asked Koba, the producer and manager, how loud they should play and if they should tone it down a little. According to legends Koba said "just go wild and play as loud as you can" and they were all pretty amazed how Su could just rip through them with her voice at the age of 15 I believe at that time. They play with backtrack in their songs for the extra effects and most of Su's harmonies (like in Gimme Chocolate or the intermission in Megitsune) and these days (don't know how it was when Yui was still there) sometimes to assist Moa when she has to sing backing vocals but also needs to do heavy choreo at the same time. She's still doing everything live, but there's backing with which she harmonizes so they don't have to turn her mic volume up when she's breathing more heavily. Yui left the band in 2018 (first on hiatus and then completely) and since 2019 they have three girls who were "sent by the fox god", but aren't officially recognized by name, who rotate as "Avengers" to support Moa with the choreo. Riho Sayashi, b. 1998 (ex-ace of Morning Musume, a succesful idol group), Momoko Okazaki, b. 2003 (was also in Sakura Gakuin until 2017) and Kano Fujihira, b. 2004 (who was in Sakura Gakuin until spring this year, but she never officially "graduated" because of the corona pandemic).

Su was 16?-17? at the time and not only had the balls to come out and follow those guys, but the chops to pull it off. She is truly a special talent! I'm sure there are others who can explain in more detail but iirc in the song her dreams (nightmares) are haunted by an evil spirit that she senses but can't see. The part where she changes her voice is her imploring the spirit to reveal itself to her. Yui was the original member who left a couple years ago, ostensibly for health reasons. Management has a rotation of three girls (The Avengers) to fill her spot in the dance routines. This song is one of Su's solos, giving the dancers a break. There are also songs which Moa, the other of the original three, sings while Su takes a break. When Yui was still there the duo of she and Moa was called Black BabyMetal. They had a few songs which were fan favorites. Just search Black BabyMetal.

Your question about the other girls leaving(I assume because they weren't in this video). I have this whole concert and have watched it many times, it's amazing, but also not the point. Point is they have several songs where it's just Su without the other two so they can take a break, then they also have several songs where it's just the other two girls to give Su a break. But majority is all three together, and they were all present for this show. One girl did leave, that is correct, but it was well after this show.

Ah I see. Thanks for clearing that up for us. That's pretty cool that they do that. Gives them a break while also giving everyone their time to shine.

BABYMETAL 101 Founded 2010 and produced by Key “Koba” Kobayashi from the Amuse Inc. talent agency. Babymetal name comes from the birth of a new style of metal fusing j-pop with metal creating what they call Kawaii Metal (Cute-Metal). The group currently consists of Suzuka Nakamoto aka “Su-Metal” (22 years old) sometimes referred to as Vocal and Dance, and Moa Kikuchi aka Moa-Metal (21 years old) sometimes referred to as Scream and Dance. With a rotating trio of girls filling the third slot, in a 3 member formation. These girls are known as Avengers and are Kano Fujihara (15 years old), Riho Sayashi (21 years old), and Momoko Okazaki (17 years old). They are supported by a rotating selection of talented backing musicians known as the Kami Band (Kami is usually poorly translated as gods, but in truth it more closely means awe inspiring spirit, entity, or object) It is why they are dressed in white to look like ghosts or spirits, though Kami being used as God(s) is so common in translation the white outfits get lost. Past Formations. Heavy Music Club Era (2010-2012) From 2010 to 2012 Babymetal consist of a three-member formation, Suzuka Nakamoto (Age 12), Moa Kikuchi (Age 10), and Yui Mizuno aka Yui-Metal (Age 10). First starting out as the Heavy Music Club as a subunit within the Developmental Idol Group created by Amuse in 2010 known as Sakura Gakuin. (A group that would introduce girls between the ages of 10-15 to music and dance through Japanese Pop idol music. Given a school theme, all three would be a part of Sakura Gakuin until their graduation from it in the same school year they would graduate from Japanese middle school or 15 years old. Suzuka graduated in March 2013, and Moa and Yui in March of 2015.) During this time there was no lore, and the girls costumes were more punkish in nature which they helped create. They also didn’t perform with live music, using a backing track or the “Skeleton band” people pretending to play music behind them. Music Video of this Era Doki Doki Morning Iine (Pronounced EE-NAH) Headbangya Babymetal Era (2012-2017) Starting in 2012 with the Legend I concert, Babymetal began its slow divorce from Sakura Gakuin, and was the first introduction of the Kami Band as well as the “Lore” that is still heavily involved in Babymetal but makes far less sense than it did during this time. The Lore is complex and involves a battle against other evil idol corporations, gaining powers running a resistance group, all at the direction of a mythical deity known as the fox god, against a all power enemy known as Akiba. The first Legend show I was the Kami Bands introduction to the end, but it also had the Skeleton Band which is seen in the wildly popular Gimmie Chocolate Music Video. This was followed by Legend D, and then Legend Z, in which is was learned that Babymetal would continue as its own entity after Suzuka’s graduation from Sakura Gakuin in March of 2013. Slowly over 2013 the Skeleton Band would be phased out of all live shows, as Babymetal came into their own. Babymetal as it is most commonly known as with Su-Metal, Moa-Meta, and Yui-Metal, Kami Band, and a somewhat understandable lore is what consisted for the majority of it’s existence. Also established beyond the 3 member formation, they had 2 other set ups, one was what fans called Su-Solos, and it would just be Su on stage with the Kami band, performing a solo, and the other is known as Black Babymetal by the band themselves, which consisted of just Moa and Yui. Music Videos of this Era Gimmie Chocolate Megitsune Road of Resistance Live in Japan (Co-written by Dragonforce) Iijime, Dame, Zettai Live at Sonisphere (No More Bullying Forever) Karate The Dark Times, The Chosen 7 Era In December 2017, Yui would miss the Legend-S concert for health reasons, these health problems would prosiest into 2018 and greatly affect the 2018 touring season bring the “Chosen 7” formation, consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto, Moa Kikuchi, and 2 backing dancers Minako Maruyama, and Minami Tsukui. Changes they would not tell fans and all throughout 2018 communicate extraordinarily little causing lots of pain for all involved fan and performer. This era is noted by their strange armor like costumes, sometimes referred to as Elf Armor. To make the poor communication, and Yui’s absence wasn’t bad enough, one of the more regular Kami band members, Mikio Fujioka passed away after falling off a balcony in late December 2017 while star gazing. A beloved and incredibly talented musician lost leaving behind his wife and only child. In September 2018 Yui would formally resign from Babymetal, stating her unspecified health and wishing to move on. Babymetal themselves announced that the group will move on focusing on Suzuka and Moa. (Something many idiots within the fandom refuse or are too stupid to understand) In October Babymetal had a concert called Dark Night Carnival which added dancers, Shoko Akiyama, Saya Hirai, and Kotono, placing a total of seven girls on stage. This was also done without warning to fans and was an absolute mess. Babymetal would finish off the the 2018 tour season returning to the 3-member formation with just Saya Hirai joining them in southeast Asia and Australia. Ending one of the most troubling times in Babymetal’s history. Music Videos of this Era Distortion Starlight The Current Era (Metal Galaxy) The current set up was first introduced in 2019 during the Babymetal Arises concert in Yokohama, before the start, the “Avenger” support dancer concept was explained in the lore, and the concept thanks to communication and a maintaining of the 3 member formation brought Babymetal out of dark times brought about during 2018. Babymetal seemed to have returned to its roots with the Avengers, as 2 of the three (Kano and Momoko) come from Sakura Gakuin. The third Riho, went to the same performing arts school as Suzuka during the same time, Actors School Hiroshima aka ASH. Music Videos of this Era (Avenger confusion) Which Avenger one sees can be confusing for those new to Babymetal. For the Music Videos, Pa Pa Ya, Elevator Girl, and Shanti Shanti Shanti, it is Kano Fujihara, who was just 14 years old at the time. Da Da Dance is a compilation of Momoko and Riho and a splicing of 2 different shows. In most fan cam videos of the American and European tour it would be either Riho or Momoko, as they toured with Babymetal in 2019. Kano had responsibilities with Sakura Gakuin as it’s president, a position Suzuka and Moa both held in Sakura Gakuin, and she’s never flown on a plane before. Some fans for 2019 did throw a stupid temper tantrum over the use of new Kami Band members who are from the west now known as the West Coast Kami Band, but like how the girls won over many, so did they and the payoff with the Legend Metal Galaxy concert was well worth it.

The Kami Band was added to Babymetal when producers wanted for the group a less idol-band approach (after the first Album). The members of the Kami band with Babymetal have some sort of rotation since individually they are stars on their own, and may be busy with other stuff. Yui Mizuno was absent before a world tour for some undisclosed health problem, she didn't return, and eventually it was made public a note where it was told she would look to pursue other solo projects.

I'm pretty sure that it's a back track for the keyboards but I'm no expert. That is what makes BABYMETAL and the Kami Band work, the music itself is complicated. I'm 60 years old and Japan always does this. They take something that was born in the west and make it so much better! I was getting really bored with American music and then I found BABYMETAL. Even J-pop is better than American pop........and really different too.

As already mentioned, the Kami band (or more specifically, the Kami God Band; Kamis are considered gods in Japanese/BM lore) are a rotating set of musicians that can come in to play supporting BabyMetal. This way, any musician playing with them could be considered a "god" and called upon by the Fox God (lore in BabyMetal) to play for them. The guitarists for this show were Leda Cygnus, and Takayoshi Ohmura. Other guitarists have come in, like Mikio Fujioka (who played mainly with them on their first world tour), Isao, or others; Herman Li and Sam Totman of Dragonforce are considered Kamis, as they came in to not only play with them at one show, but wrote Road of Resistance with them, and played on the album version of that song. As for the girls here, This was a Su-Metal only song. Moa and Yui (who was with the band at this time) were taking a break offstage. Moa and Yui have their songs together, and actually performed as a subgroup within BabyMetal called Black BabyMetal. They actually got the heavier songs (which is funny, as the youngest girls got the darkest/heaviest songs). You still have yet to go down that Foxhole. Right now, I think you're ready for Headbanger. Be sure to get the one that was performed at Legend 1997. After that, you're ready for BabyMetal DEATH. For that one, be sure to get the one at Legend 1997. You'll be in for a treat for those. After that, there's even more to get into with Black BabyMetal.

The musicians are just hired help and matter very little at all. They were liable to be changed out for one show or another. Babymetal is very much like the other groups under Amuse Inc, a huge company with world wide influence. Check out Perfume and One OK Rock to get an idea of the experience Amuse has in pushing out talent. Babymetal is awesome in concert and has the best musicians, they do huge shows like this twice and make a concert show to sell. After that they tour hard in a very inexpensive and simplified tour or in stadiums opening for other groups. T-Shirts, memorabilia ... all that fun stuff and the company is killing it .. The girls, the band .. everyone ... they are hired help .. The last tour the guys from Galactic Empire filled in as musicians after opening for then last year. Yui Metal left the group and other performers fill her place as needed on stage. Life goes on .. Have to love them and they are awesome either way ..
