This is one of the songs that really showcases the awesome talent of the Kami Band. The Kami Band for this performance was Leda Cygnus (first solo), Takayoshi Ohmura (second solo), BOH (bass), and Hideki Aoyama (drums). The idea of this intro is that each of the Kami are performing a solo to beseech the Fox God to send to forth Su-metal, hence she rises from the floor at the centre of the giant pentacle that forms the stage. Rondo of Nightmare is one of Su's four solo songs, the others being Amore, No Rain No Rainbow, and Akatsuki that were on the first two albums. There are also four songs that Yui and Moa perform together under the name "Black Babymetal". The purpose of these split songs was to allow the girls to get some rest during the show when they were still quite young. At this performance at the Nippon Budokan, Su was only sixteen years old, performing solo at the most famous and prestigious venue in Japan while standing on a two meter tall platform in the dark. This song allows her to really show off her stage presence and vocal power without the distraction of choreography.

Great reaction. This is one of 4 Su-metal solos, two on each of the first two albums. The others are 'Akatsuki', 'Amore' and 'No Rain, No Rainbow'. Yui and Moa would get a break while Su performed those - Su would get a break when Yui and Moa performed one of their duets - they were called Black BABYMETAL for those and they also had two on each of the first two albums (4 No Uta' or Song 4, Onedari Daisakusen', 'GJ' and 'Sis Anger'). The Kami Band intro, as you know, is called 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods'. In order of solos - Leda Cygnus (blue guitar), Takayoshi Ohmura (gold guitar), BOH (6 string bass) and Hideki Aoyama (drums). There can't be many 16 year olds who could follow that intro and then just take over the whole stage and arena the way Su did. I understand rondo is a musical term denoting a repeated theme - something like that anyway. I believe they borrowed the term for the title of this song as Su is caught in a recurring nightmare, being chased through the darkness by something she can't see. Eventually she hides, but it is still coming closer. Knowing there is no escape she asks that if she is to die won't it at least reveal itself to her. This was early March 2014. They played two nights at the Budokan in Tokyo (think the equivalent of Carnegie Hall or Madison Square Garden - it is the place all Japanese artists aspire to play), Red Night and Black Night, becoming the youngest average age female band ever to headline there. They had just released their first album - they sold out both nights. 🤘🦊🤘 They were back at the Budokan as part of their 10th anniversary celebration and played 10 shows over the first 3 or 4 months of 2021.

I can only echo the other commenters here and suggest more songs to try. "Akatsuki", "Syncopation", "BxMxC", and The Trilogy of Lights ("Starlight", "Shine", and "Arkadia"). There are also songs like "Karate" and "Megitsune". If you want a little taste of the other girls singing without Su, there are a few Black Babymetal songs, all go a bit harder than the usual faire. My favorite of those is "Onedari Daisakusen".

BOH (Daisuke Bohte) told in an interview that he initially played a 4-stringed bass until his music teacher suggested him to change to 5 and 6 strings bass in order to differentiate from the rest of the bass players and also to increase his versatility. Remember that he's a session musician. He also said that he prefer this kind of work rather than being part of a stable band. He also mentioned that backing BABYMETAL is one of his most demanding jobs. He plays an Atelier Z BOH's Custom by the way. The other kami of bass, Climt Tustin (who is actually a guitarist) plays a 5 strings bass.

Nice reaction. About the backing track, there is no backing track for this song. Someone picked up and recorded the radio signal that was for Su's in-ear for this live performance. If you're interested, you can search the KZbin. Someone mixed that with this performance, and it was sync. About the AM radio effect, that was Su press her nose with the microphone. A band covered this song and the singer applied the same technique while singing. The result was the same. This can be found on KZbin also.

The 'AM radio' effect is part of the backtrack, not some esoteric vocal/microphone technique. It sounds exactly the same at every single live performance of Rondo, and if you listen closely to the IEM capture you can hear her start to take a breath before it ends.

Heck, in fancams you can even hear a clear difference between the live singing and the backtrack singing. And in many of the live performances she moves out of the marionette position early or doesn't even lip-sync the whole thing. Su's singing is excellent; there's no need to try to elevate her by making up tall tales. Also you can clearly hear the live instruments in that IEM feed, don't know what you're talking about there 🤷‍♂

@@silly_programme5061 yes I have. Yes I know you can hear the live instruments but they are not fed at a lower volumn into her IEM. I am not trying to elevate her she can do that on her own. But have you ever taken videos of 2 different live performances of the same song of BABYMETAL and started them together at the same time? I have, I took two live recordings of Ijame, Dame Zettai now these two video recordings were 5 years apart from each other and I started them together at the same time. I did this for myself to compare the changes in the song over the years out of curiosity and was floored by what happened. After that I showed it to a drummer friend of mine. Because they were almost Identical in every detail, there was no sound echoing in the slightest every note played by the band was exactly the same each note hit exactly together in tune and each word and phrase sung by Su even to the hand gestures and where she glanced and facial expressions were the exact same the only thing different is you could hear how her voice had changed. My friend did not like BABYMETAL at the time for all the same reasons people used to have. But he was literally blown away.... he could not believe what he had just witnessed he said "I just saw something I absolutly believed was impossible to do, a band played a song exactly the same twice" we found another one from a show in Japan qued it and played all 3 at the same time and it again was exactly the same all 3 at once. My friend still does not dig BABYMETAL but he says that professionally they are the best and tightest band he has ever heard in the world by a long shot. The first video was the one that they played at Makuhari Messe Metal Galaxy World Tour Jan 26 2020 and was the first time they played that song since Yui left the other was Live at Sonisphere 2014 UK they are 5 years apart but I just wanted to see what changes there would be without Yui. But I could not believe it. You won't either but Go try it....... you will be floored, Then pick whatever other video of this song you want after you do that I think you will get your answer to why Rondo sounds exactly the same evertime because they can play it exactly the same everytime except they might change the solos around which they do all the time

Great & Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。This is one of the songs that I am longing for revivals by New BABYMETAL. "Rondo" is a musical form with a recurring leading theme. I can't tell how many times I have viewed this video. It is literally a rondo of happy dream for me. Kamis' (=Gods') super solos were excellent enough as a main event in the show, but once the 16-year-old Queen (as of 2014) emerged from the underground, she colored everything differently with her penetrating voice then turned Kami Band's plays into a ritual to summon her.

Nice reaction. One of the cool things about Babymetal songs is that they're open to personal interpretation. Many of their songs lyrics are written in this fashion. That was the first time I heard this song is about depression from what you read. But I can see how it could be viewed that way. Literally the song is about a nightmare. One in which the dreamer is being chased in the night. Outside they run with the moonlight flashing off of the fangs and claws. Ooooh scary. They then try to hide in the forest, but it keeps coming. They then try to hide in a fountain. This is where we get some cool lighting effects. That make it look like were looking at Su floating in the water. Amazing theatrics. Then she is caught by the creature. It's at this point we get that radio voice. And she gathers what strength she has left and ask for it to at least reveal itself. She then falls into the darkness. And that's why the song ends suddenly. Did she die in the nightmare? Ah did we forget this is a Rondo which means recurring or repeating. It ends suddenly because she awoke. Only to have this scary nightmare again someday. Now how you interpret all of that is up to you. Babymetal seems to like fans to do so. As Su recently mentioned she was surprised by the fan's interpretation of one of their other songs. Many other artists have also had this happen. Once they put it out there the song is up to interpretation. This song however is top of the list for lyrically being one of Babymetals darkest songs. They don't have many. As you may have noticed there's not much in the way of kawaii in the song. A sign of the maturing Babymetal to come. Musically this is a fantastic song. Love the rhythms and time changes. The piano in the back track is very cool and keeps a lot of the dark feel to it. As many others have said and will say on other songs. The Kamiband is just incredible no matter which member is playing with them. But Boh takes the cake for me on bass. They've done some other intros over the years. Just look for Babymetal songs with intro. Kagerou with intro has the East Kamiband playing the intro. Which was formed when the West Kamiband couldn't make those shows due to scheduling. They all have their own projects going on. Enjoy the journey through the foxhole and into the metalverses of Babymetal.

Excellent. Possibly mentioned, but the KAMI Band also uses a 9-string guitar on a few songs. During 'RoN', despite the KAMI's virtuosity, and Su-metal's powerful, haunting vocals while waltzing 2-3 meters above a spinning stage, an unseen, yet equally impressive performance was happening below stage, where it's been rumored that Moametal and Yuimetal were taking advantage of their break by working on their homework assignments. OK you had to ask. I play in a 3 bass band where the tunings are somewhat specific. I play the Sub-bass which is tuned G#, B, E - yes it has only 3 strings and its high E is the same as a normal bass tuning E. The rhythm bassist plays an 8 string standard EADG chorded with an octave string like a 12 string guitar and fills the role usually occupied by rhythm guitar & the 7 string bass player goes: F,C,G,D,A,E,B so he and I have no open string overlap - apparently its Ibanez's standard 7 string tuning he kind of uses it like you would a baritone guitar but of course an octave down and he plays lead, just an octave down on the lead guitar. His greater range enables the three of us to avoid being more muddy than is desired.

Playback is used for the "broken marionette" bit, any death growl vocals (with a few rare exceptions, none in this song) and any synthesizer sounds (no live God of Synth kami-band member).. and for any Lore videos (which you've not seen yet) which happen between songs sometimes. The rest is all live. There are some normal low-mix light effects on SU-METAL's voice (probably slight reverb). There is a capture of SU-METAL's in-ear mix for this song (from a different performance) recorded and available on youtube if you want to hear what she hears, and everything 100% raw. Another example would be at the end of Gimme Chocolate, the choreography calls for eating chocolate motions from the three girls so the background bah bah bahhs are done via playback in that case. Regardless - SU-METAL is an incredible singer, and doesn't need playback to belt out everything live. You'll understand with time. :)

There is parts of backing tracks in some songs. Very often for the vocals of the other two girls who do a lot of dancing. What I think you are hearing though, which I might be mistaken, is chorus. I think they've doubled her vocals with a very, very slight deviance to give it that subtle richer/thicker sound.

I _think_ the "AM radio effect" is actually just Su showing her vocal ability. I've seen it discussed on other channels, and it looks like it's an actual vocal technique (which is why her neck turns down) rather than just sound processing. If true, this would tell us two things. 1) The human voice is far more remarkable than we generally realise. 2) Su has a complete mastery of it. I'm quite happy to believe both of the above.

I'm not sure why that comment you read about this song being 'about' depression bugged me so much except that BabyMetal is so overwhelmingly about hope and positivity that they would never write anything about *losing* to depression. It's fine if a listener connected to it in that way, but the song is about being trapped in a nightmare. Like a literal one. And the theme is reinforced by the musical device of the rondo. It's more like a dark fairy tale. When she seems to be suspended, I believe she's meant to have thrown herself into a fountain to hide from the thing chasing her. Again, all of this *could* be applied as a metaphor for depression. But while BabyMetal is notoriously ambiguous with their lyrics to allow the listener to draw their own meaning from the song, I can't imagine they'd intentionally apply such a hopeless outcome to a real world situation. They are very, very much about perseverance, and have several lyrics in several songs that are outright and unambiguously, 'You got this. No matter how bad things are now, everything will work out.' Sorry, that interpretation just rubbed me all kinds of the wrong way. :p I know Su records her own harmonies, but I almost feel like what you're hearing in this one is echo in the venue. The main vocal line is all Su live. But like you said, it hardly matters as any backing track is not doing the heavy lifting. Thanks for the reaction! 🤘🦊🤘

The Kami band get a few chances to play solo. Here's a list of the songs with a Kami intro. "Catch Me If You Can", "Yava", "Awadama Fever", " Kagerou"( has the Western Kami band), and ofc this one. It's always great to hear them. And if your curious to hear members of the Kami's outside of BabyMetal , check out the Kari Band. Good song to start out with would be "Samurai Groove". 🤘🦊🤘
