Press ‘Option’ + ‘Command’ + ‘k’ on your Magic Keyboard or other external keyboard and at the bottom right you can select shortcuts to get all features of DaVinci Resolve just like it is on Mac. Thereby you can include all pages, so not only Cut and Color but also Edit, Fairlight etcetera. Seems that BlackMagic Design ported the MacOS version 1:1 to iPadOS. Not all functions will work, but most of them do! Try it out. Oh by the way, a spokesperson from BlackMagic Design told that the iPadOS version will get native full function support with upcoming updates. So that’s reason number two that you already can access all pages of DaVinciResolve. 😉

Whatever you think of the iPad version, this is a super smart move of Blackmagic to beat other NLEs to iPad. Resolve is great it’s just not industry standard for anything other than color correction, but having it on iPad introduces it to more novice editors for the future. Rooting for Resolve!

It looks like you actually get all the features. I just edited my first video on my M1 iPad Pro. I’ve never used the cut screen for editing on my MacBook before. So I kind of had to relearn everything. It was still a pretty good experience. I think Luma fusion is really getting the raw end of the deal because it’s pretty great too. But the export settings, they are really sketchy. When I first tried the KZbin option, the end result was really choppy and crazy looking footage. I had to go with the ProRes. Weirdly, it was literally exactly the same size file as the one that turned out really choppy, but it actually worked. Also, you really need an Apple Pencil for this. Fingers are pretty much too big.. the crashing maybe because you’re iPad is old. Mine didn’t crash at all. I edited on a external extreme drive, and I will save my battery really went down fast. I had to take a break, charge it and come back that was annoying.

Works well on a M2 with a thunderbolt SSD. It’s a powerful program, but I think because screen space is so limited, even with the pencil, scroll bars are hard to use and some operations are just annoying. It’s a program that just works better on a full computer. Having it on an iPad is great if you are traveling or need to work light in the field, but the limitations of the device make it hard to use for involved projects. It would be interesting to see if it were possible to create stripped down views of each page that would reduce the amount of GUI elements to just what you needed for a particular task. Also as some people have mentioned, all the desktop views exist in the iPad version (edit, fusion, fair light, deliver etc) but you have to edit the keyboard short cuts to make them available. My guess is that Blackmagic will make these more easily available once they figure out how to make them work more effectively on a touch screen.

As a simple speed test, I rendered a 22:30 sequence of shots with no effects, transitions or color grading. The source footage was iPhone H265 4k or GoPro footage of varying sizes from a thunderbolt Nvme drive and rendered to a ProRes file in HD back to the same Nvme drive. Rendered on a M2 iPad with 8GB of memory, it took 2:44 to render the 22:30 sequence, averaging 150 - 200 fps. Rendering the same sequence to h.264 took 3:10 (I assume it was faster in ProRes as there is the hardware encoder on the M2.)

Pro apps rely more on optimisation (like co-processors) and, of course, RAM. That is why when YT creators said the M1 was wasted, and leading buyers to the 4GB iPad Pros (12X/Z) were simply poor techies and wrong. RAM, RAM, and RAM for Procreate and DV Resolve. It is simple. To get a great experience, the iPad Pro M2 with min 8GB (better 16GB) should be where you go. This is DV Resolve, far more features and overhead than whatever you rendered out before. DV is built to be a pro app, there are plenty of simple, light-weight apps out there, but DV will be pro-level and take up a significant amount of RAM when loaded.
@thatpitter2 жыл бұрын
Basically what Andy said, one of the big things about DaVinci Resolve coming to iPad is the fact it CAN. That’s only possible due to iPad getting support for newer features like Swap, and more ram finally being available (instead of only allowing for 25% typically). Apps that have been available to edit video on iPad previously were designed for iPads, which is why some more flexible features and pro features never were available - it just wasn’t possible. DaVinci isn’t designed to be Ram efficient, it’s designed to be capable, hence, like was said, much more overhead.

I’ll never buy another iPad again until they can bring heavy demanding software that only runs on their latest M-series Apple silicon chips or my current A12Z iPad either is not working. I already sold my Windows desktop to cover to cost for this iPad, and I’m eying a Mac laptop. The stage Manager always worked on older iPads. Apple stated in their interviews that it would work, but not to the degree they feel is "Apple" standard. I’m open to being proven wrong but I think iPadOS has gone as far as it can software wise. It’s matured and it’s good software but this division between iPad applications and Mac applications is starting to become a hindrance for some users.

Optimized battery charging? Calculator?
@andyH_England2 жыл бұрын
@@TailosiveTech Get over it with the calculator app and support developers; there are hundreds in the Apple Store, even ones that turn your onscreen keyboard into a calculator. This is just ridiculous negativity, no calculator app!!! As Apple said, there are so many good ones available they feel anything they would do would be second-rate. Isn't optimised battery charging now built-in, done by ML automatically?
@_Digitalguy2 жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England it's not optimized charging, it's just not charging to 100% but saying it's 100% (when it's more like 97-98). It's better than nothing but it's far from proper optimized charging like it's done on most PCs or like Aldente does on MacOS, where you can leave the device plugged it when not in use
@andyH_England2 жыл бұрын
@@_Digitalguy Yes, if you compare versus the Tab S line with a setting to stop charging at 85%, it does not have a limiter. I assumed he meant charging slower at specific points in the charging cycle, which Apple now does as part of the software, where previously they had a setting. Yes, a limiter would be nice.

If Apple really wanted these on iPads I feel they would’ve added them by now. I know they will add them eventually but we’ll all be saying the same thing as we said about lightning to usb-c “why did it take you this long to add it?” I really do want the iPad and iPadOS to succeed. I just don’t get what apple wants to do with it.

Actually it’s an easy “hack” to unlock all the other pages of Davinci Resolve; I think that the edit page and others aren’t optimized and that’s why BM hid them in this early version of the software: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnnVl4SGa6elm8k

Man I just cant really imagine what apple could do with the ipad anymore... It just has peeked for how much apple is willing to do with it. The device needs a design overhaul, or else I fear it will become boring, and no amount of changes that apple would realistically do could fix it. They need MacOS, or Pro apps, or something
@katrinabryce2 жыл бұрын
The hardware is fine. It needs a software overhaul. Calculator app, improved Files App, Terminal, Final Cut, Logic, XCode. The need to allow in-app plug-in stores, like the one you get in VSCode.
@codexous2 жыл бұрын
@@katrinabryce the calculator app is a testament to how absolutely ridiculous apple decides to completely neglect certain aspects of software. My general sense from apple for their UI design is that once it works, they don’t change it for a very long time, both with small features and at large scale. It really is a shame, because there is absolutely no reason that the iPad can’t have a calculator app, and there are countless ways they could do it. I’m just convinced they are not going to add it, for whatever obscure reason that they decide to withhold from updating and adding software features that have existed for years on other OSs. I know im quite sensitive when it comes to this issue and most people don’t care, but i still hate how apple h seemingly doesn’t care.
@Gamingwithslinky2 жыл бұрын
@@katrinabryce Agreed. Or Put a really really good screen on it for content consumption or something! At the minute the iPad is trying to be something that It's not. And either Apple needs to make it an actual computer or rework the lineup to be cheaper and more purely as a tablet, then give Macs touch screens
@andyH_England2 жыл бұрын
@@Gamingwithslinky The success of the iPad was founded on the fact that it was not yet another laptop with a touchscreen. You are a niche minority; 90% of all ipads sold are to consumers who do not care for what you want. Apple needs to make the Pros (M-chips) have their own iPadOS Pro, still not a desktop OS, but with other add-ons. But at the end of the day, it is getting developers onboard, which can take decades.

They have likely done their research, and the brainiacs told them that it is a zero-sum game, probably more likely to be detrimental to their business model. That would be a poor business opportunity with 1-3 years of world slowdown and recovery in progress.

Remember Steve Jobs’ quadrant of divvying up product lines based off of a higher and lower end of 2 categories, like price and features? Here is my take on that logic being applied to the 2023 iPhones. Lmk thoughts! iPhone: portability vs expense More portable, less expensive: 5.8", same screen as iPhone X (as with Face ID sensors + camera), aluminum rounded like iPhone X/XS/11Pro. MagSafe compatibility, so single 12ProMax Wide sensor. "iPhone SE", Silver, Starlight, Product Red, Midnight aluminum, good A15 + 64GB ($50 extra to 128GB) + 5GB RAM, $449. Less portable, less expensive: 6.1", USB-C (10Gb/s), iPhone 14 body (aluminum) and screen with 14 pro pill. 2 cameras (whichever is better between the 13ProMax and 14Plus) for both the Wide and UltraWide, plus 15 lineup LiDAR Good A16 + 6GB RAM + 128GB storage ($100 extra to 256GB), ideally a color scheme similar to M1 iMac or recent non-pro USB-C iPads. "iPhone 15", $819. More portable, more expensive: iPhone 14 Pro front stretched to fit 6.3". USB 3.1? (20Gb/s!) USB-C. Stainless steel: titanium 2:1 for weight and cost balance. 3 cameras, same Wide and Telephoto 3X as 14Pro, same UltraWide as 15 Ultea "iPhone 15 Pro", White, Moon Gray, Space Black, good A17 + 256GB + 6GB RAM ($150 extra to $512), $1049 Less portable, more expensive: 6.7", titanium, smaller island, otherwise same screen as 14ProMax. A17X, TB4 USB-C, 8GB RAM. 14 Wide, better UltraWide, periscope 3X or 5X zoom lens, 15 lineup LiDAR. Sideways FaceID functionality, and semi-Slideover in landscape from island side. "iPhone 15 Ultra", $1249. 512GB ($200 extra for 1TB), Metallic Silver, Slate.
