Your Resolve knowledge is amazing. You do know we mere mortals have to watch your videos like 10 times for any of to sink in, right? This was packed full of great information laid out in an easy to understand (yet still somewhat overwhelming way.) Thank you for making your series of instructional videos.

I realize a lot of this is more for advanced users :) But then again, not everyone needs everything in Resolve. If you only do basic editing and afterwards color correction, you can safely ignore the other parts :-)

One tiny addition I can make to your excellent and comprehensive summary: if a Fusion composition has two (or more) MediaOut nodes, ie supplies extra images to Color, these are cached separately at the Fusion cache level. The Fusion cache creates a 'SourceOne' folder in CacheClip (and thanks to your video I now learned why it's called "Source" - hadn't realised the whole cache was called Source prior to v16). Add a second MediaOut with Fusion caching enabled and you get a 'SourceTwo' folder. And so on.
@VFXstudy
@VFXstudy 3 жыл бұрын
Cool never thought of that, but good to see even that scenario is covered under the Fusion Cache. Before Fusion got integrated it was Source cache because it would have cached the source dabayering/decoding. Not exactly sure when they changed the name. Either v15 or 16 after Fusion came in...

Sorry for writing below this video, could you explain how the "frame render script" - "Start Render Script" and "End Render Script" areas work and give some example of scripts we can write in this area. I have a test and I can vary some parameters of the same node, but if I call values of external nodes I can't link them. It is very difficult to find material on how to program in Fusion. Is it possible to use self-defined variables that increment? Thanks if you can help me.

Thanks so much for this playlist. You've covered items that I have never been able to find on KZbin. I am self taught like most people, so this fills in many gaps in regards to the workings of DR. QUESTION 1: Where does the "video monitoring" come into play under project settings. I have a 21:9 4k monitor plugged into a laptop. What setting should I set in DR. QUESTION 2: Is there a way of setting all your preferences for edit/fusion/colour tab (plus timelines) as a default so you can set and forget. QUESTION 3: My recorded footage is 4k 29.7? fps H.264 (drone and Mobile phone) If I want to standardise my final render output to 4k 60fps, how do I get DR to show two duplicate frames per second to emulate the increase in FPS. Is this a combination of clip duration and settings in "Clip Attributes". Thank you so much for creating great concise content. Mach's Gut

Hi, thank you so much for all the very good videos you provide about DVR. I have the following question: I use DVR 18 with rushes Sony A7SIII in H264 highest bitrade, PC Asus i7 with RTX 207. I create proxies 960 x 540 in Dnx LB, the menu "prefer the proxies" is activated and I do use optimized medias. So why in cache smart mode, DVR is calculating all the videos as I use the proxies, ? I guess it shoud NOT. Thank you in advance for your support

Maybe I didn't pay too much attention to your video, but I think that there are some aspects very important about cache hierarchy that are not explained in this wonderful video. It looks like that resizing, stabilize or changing scaling option in the edit page invalidate Fusion Output Cache. And for more confusion, some of these operations can also be done in the Color page (stabilization for example). Does this mean that cache for this alterations occour BEFORE the Fusion Cache or are they part of the Fusion Cache? It is a bit confusion, but I've learned from direct experience that stabilizing e scaling the video to the correct settings is the FIRST thing to do, escpecially if you don't want do render Fusion Cache hundreds of times!
@VFXstudy
@VFXstudy 3 ай бұрын
Edit page resizing etc. definitely happens after Fusion but you are right, it does seem to redo the cache. the Color page has access to the edit page scaling AND in addition has a color page sizing options. So it'll depend on which one you use. Yeah, it's a bit confusing having so many places and different features that can all do resizing...
@Rudo1984
@Rudo1984 3 ай бұрын
@@VFXstudy I've learned that if I have to do some complex/slow rendering Fusion editing, I need to stabilize and resize/crop right before editing in Fusion, because if for some some reason I need to change/correct the stabilization or the resizing, all caches will be reset!

Thanks for your explanations and being detailed and clear. I have a quick question. I notice if I right click on a audio segment in my timeline. There is a cache option called "Cache Audio Effects". Is this another "cache" option you would recommend turning on? Since it is in the settings of the timeline. I am guessing it is not a permanent setting and would have to be enabled manually. Thank you.
@VFXstudy
@VFXstudy Жыл бұрын
Yeah, audio effects are separate and typically much less processing intensive than video effects so caching is not needed as much. But if you do a lot of audio processing or notice playback issues there, then that might be a good idea. I think you're right that it needs to be manually triggered like you said.

Any advice on using multiple drives with different speeds? I've got a 2017 iMac with two Thunderbolt 3 and four USB3.2 ports, and I have a two Samsung 980 Pro externals, 2TB each. However, I have to dedicate one of the Thunderbolt ports to the external display, so only one of the drives can get 40GB/s. Should I run my OS, Resolve and Fusion (studio versions) through the 10GB/s USB ports and have the cache folders run through the one Thunderbolt port, or will that not actually be any faster and I should just have everything on the same drive? Where should I locate my source media, proxies, etc.? Thank you for all you do, your videos are extraordinarily helpful!
@VFXstudy
@VFXstudy Жыл бұрын
I would use the fastest drive and connection for cache folder. The next best you have for the media. OS and Software is more about how fast the computer starts or how fast Software loads, but less to do with speed while working.

Hey, this skips over the Fusion page itself. how much control do you have over caching inside the Fusion page? Like the green bar below the fusion page timeline. Can you change the resolution and codec it caches to? Or is the only option to Cache a specific node to disk
@VFXstudy
@VFXstudy Жыл бұрын
I am covering this in another tutorial- also in this series if I remember correctly. But Fusion is RAM cache and is automatic. You can enable proxy mode in Fusion and Resolve to lower the resolution on the fly. Manual cache is only via Fusion disk cache.

Is it possible to cache multiple renderpasses from 3D (black and white PNGs on top of each other with blend nodes) into one cached node, now it seems like it calculates each pass every frame.
@VFXstudy

In Fusion? There it only goes into RAM cache by default. You can select an individual node though and manually trigger a disk cache. But in the edit page it will always cache the entire comp

This is very helpful and clears up some confusion and frustration I have had for a long time... I still see weird behavior when working with adjustment clips. I like using a fusion comp on an adjustment clip because it means that I get the footage visible in the comp but I can also reuse the comp on other footage. The only way I have been getting this to Cache is by putting a Solid Color above it in the timeline and setting the opacity to 0. I get now that this is a brute force approach that will force a cache when anything under it is changed. I can also set the Adjustment Clip to cache its color output. The Weird behavior is that the Adjustment clip will re cache even when it should not. If I add something above it in the time line and disable it, for example. Is this a bug? You don't see the same Caching options on the Adjustment clip so I am still confused as to where it sits in the order :)
@VFXstudy
@VFXstudy 3 жыл бұрын
You mean the Adjustment clip doesn't offer a Fusion Output Cache? Haven't tried that. If it's color output it should recqche for anything above, but everything below of course. You can also copy and paste fusion effects between clips if you don't want the Adjustment clip route
@redorchidstudios
@redorchidstudios 3 жыл бұрын
@@VFXstudy Right... it will trigger a re cache even for changes that happen above... it is seems like the adjustment clip is calculated last even though it is not actually last in the order? I might need to try to find a workflow building in the clips (but I sometimes need the comp to cover more than one) or using fusion comps instead of adjustment clips (but there I can't see the footage) I would love it if you could add a MediaIn node in a fusion comp and select the track layer you want to feed in. :)
@The-Bloke
@The-Bloke 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah an Adjustment Clip has no Fusion Cache option for some reason, but the Color Output cache will work to cache the result of Fusion. And yes I see the same regarding the Adj Clip cache regenerating even when clips are placed above it. The reason is simple: it's using the Sequence cache, ie the per-timeline cache, the same one that's used for transitions and composites. So it regenerates when anything changes anywhere on the timeline. So it's not a bug as such, but a result of how they've chosen to implement it.
@ToryJamesHooton
@ToryJamesHooton 3 жыл бұрын
@@The-Bloke but it is regenerating even when exclude track cache is enabled for the track above. I am still testing because I think this also happened once with a fusion comp too but with this situation you would expect no sequence cache right?
@redorchidstudios
@redorchidstudios 3 жыл бұрын
Ok I did some more testing and it seems to me like there is something keeping cache files from being persistent, if there is any kind of fusion comp associated with it. You can test this... enable "render cache fusion output" on a clip, this will cache the source media, then move it around on the time line or even put a Solid Color with the opacity set to zero over it with "exclude track from caching" enabled on the track above. The cache will stay persistent all the time. Then open the clip in fusion and add something so that there is a fusion comp on the clip. Now the cache will not stay persistent. If you move the clip along the time line or toggle the visibility or enabled status of the Solid Color above. Even moving something below the clip will cause a recache. At least if it is over or under other clips... EDIT: If I turn off Automatically cache composites in user mode it behaves more like expected I will still some times get a recache on an adjustment clip when moving a transparent solid above it which should not happen, I would think.

AE has been more accessible both to obtain and to learn as you can transplant mist thinking from still image manipulation software like Photoshop. For most of us. Nodes are a bit like walking up to a eurorack synthesizer when most of what you know is standard multitrack recording. You get so much granular control with nodes. But with it you kind of have to throw out pretty much all preconceptions of how to approach a task. I left the adobe ecosystem completely a couple of years ago. And I won't lie. The Fusion workflow still does trip me up as I keep thinking of AE solutions instead of node based ones. Fusion has very little handholding while it gives you all that power that in many ways exceeds AE. So I do just stick with it. The simple thing alone that there is no such thing as a turnaround process going between the editor and compositor and sound work just blows my mind. So yes. I do get the intimidation that people feel. But I implore these same people. Learn nodes. It is worth it. And while Adobe has great marketing teams. They do make sure ro show off whenever anyone uses their products. But looking behind the curtains of the bigger industry... It's nodes all the way down. As for the learning process. Start simple. What effects do you need to create? Figure out that and build on the skills for each shot and project. Some things are best done on the edit page with a simple OFX tool. Some are done best in the Color page. Some are better done in Fusion.
