DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 Problem No H.265 10 Bit 4:2:2 Multi-pass Export - Main 4:2:2 10 Encoding Profile.
Just a focused video about one particular problem with DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 where it does not give an option for multi-pass encoding when choosing the H.265 Main 4:2:2 10 encoding profile. This H.265 profile is for a 10 Bit output with 4:2:2 chroma subsampling.
Previous versions of Resolve did allow for the selection of multi-pass when using the H.265 Main 4:2:2 10 encoding profile but Resolve failed to complete the encode and immediately responded with an error message. This was obviously a function that did not work and needing fixing in a future release, presumably in 18.
When choosing the H.265 Main encoding profile and the H.265 Main 10 encoding profile you can select multiple-pass, just as you've been able to do in previous versions of Resolve.
The issue is the same when selecting MOV or MP4 as the codec container/wrapper.
You can of course do a single-pass encode/export with the H.265 Main 4:2:2 10 colour profile. However, you lose the advantage of the analysis pass during a multi-pass or two pass encode and the subsequent advantage for the bitrate when bit-budgeting which also means you also lose the advantage of comparatively smaller file sizes when using multi-pass.
TO BE CLEAR:
This problem I'm reporting is happening on Mac with a MacBook Pro M1 Max and its use of the Mac's Apple Silicon Media Encoders. I can also confirm that the same problem happens with the M1 Mac Mini, which does have some form of acceleration but not the same as those in the M1 Max, M1 Ultra etc. or the new Mac M2 MacBooks.
I don't know if this problem is something that happens on Windows with Resolve, for instance, when using NVENC or Quick Sync, if they are available as accelerated encode export options for H.264 and H.265.
Even when delivering a 10 Bit 4:2:2 colour chroma subsampled codec, regardless of the codec being inter-frame or intra-frame, to a platform that will further compress to another codec at 8 Bit 4:2:0. There are particular advantages in delivering 10 Bit and 4:2:2. In those instances there's a chance that you may want to reduce bitrate and therefore file size to more manageable sizes when uploading, especially if your internet upload speed/bandwidth is relatively low/slow. Again, this is where multi-pass can be an advantage and help.
Even when encoding a highly compressed H.265 output for final delivery or local archive in 10 Bit 4:2:2, which is what I do and is my main use for it when using 10 Bit 4:2:2 sources. Again, multi-pass can have an advantage in maintaining a relative picture quality but at a smaller/lower bitrate and final file size. Which can, once again, afford advantages in local archive storage or delivery on particular media and via the internet.
I'll post this video on the Blackmagic forum, hopefully someone from BMD may respond and explain the omission of the multi-pass option when exporting H.265 in the Main 4:2:2 10 encoding profile.

I am hoping that you can help me figure out why MediaInfo displays information very similar to what you have in this video, except that I have 4:2:0, instead of your 4:2:2. Otherwise, I have an HEVC HDR Main 10 BT.2020 file, but when I upload it to YT, then stats for nerds shows that it is a bt.709 file. Now, I did see another video which claimed that I need to allow upto 48 hours for HDR to be processed. I am using Davinci Resolve Studio 19 on a Windows 10 machine. With all of that said, any ideas on why YT keeps changing my file to a bt.709?

Hi. If you're talking about 4:2:2 on my input, that's because my recording is ProRes 422 HQ, which is 4:2:2. Whether it's HDR or SDR, MAIN10 is only 4:2:0, MAIN10 422 is 4:2:2. However, whether the chroma subsampling is 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 on either the source footage to the output, it doesn't matter because KZbin will use 4:2:0 for it's re-encoding of the upload file. You are getting rec.709 on the KZbin playback because KZbin re-encodes all uploaded videos and it re-encodes to multiple codecs and colour spaces depending on what was uploaded. Depending on the device you play the video back on, you may see H.264, VP9 and maybe even AV1 as the codec for playback and you will see rec.709 or 2020 depending on what colour space KZbin is using to stream the to the playback device and whether or not the device is capable of SDR and/or HDR. KZbin just feeds an appropriate codec/stream/colour space to the device playing the video back. If you are uploading HDR and as long as the upload file is formatted correctly, KZbin can take ages to encode the HDR file. I've even had it take almost 3 days for the HDR version to appear. KZbin will always encode the rec.709/SDR versions first. Here's a video that may be helpful for importing HDR and exporting HDR that will compatible with KZbin. There are a number of ways of doing this and this is just one way of doing it. This assumes that the source footage is HDR10, which is most likely what you are working with. I have an Nvidia card, why can't I see any Encoder selection field in my Export settings in DaVinci Resolve 18? I select Format QuickTime or MP4, Code H.265... no encoder option. Do yo need a specific version of this software or some add on?

I guess you are using the free version of Resolve? The nvidia encoder is only available on Davinci Resolve Studio, the paid Version.

Well I was just wondering about this ! I thought I was crazy and I had imagined this option haha. I hope they can bring this back. Pretty sure they won't though, because BMD is now opening possibility for third party software encoders !

That's very odd. I'm on the latest version, it still doesn't do two pass in 10bit 4:2:2 but I don't have that same issue as you with slow motion video. Cheers, Dave.

According to my understanding, Blackmagic's focus isn't on a good user experience regarding HEVC codecs anyway. Why else should they limit the hardware based encoding and decoding on NVIDIA (Windows) hardware to the Studio version, only? This limitation mostly affects non-commercial users, who want to process their private iPhone footage with Davinci Resolve Free and there isn't even a hint inside the software itself - only on their website respectively in the documentation.

Yes, the hardware is capable. The encoding functions are specific to the accelerators but even if they weren't, the analysis pass is a software function.

@@DavidHarry with nvenc hardware encoding multipass is not a software function but a setting of the encoder and not a real 2pass. It does an extended look ahead analysis. Did the Apple version do a real 2pass or was it more like nvenc?

Within the other profiles it is doing two pass and there’s a difference in lower bitrates between single and two pass.
