I shoot all our videos in 1080p, but I upscale everything in DR to 4K for KZbin. I find the YT compression makes 1080p video look awful! DR does a nice job upscaling so all my source video saves me space and on KZbin the final render I upload looks much better at all resolutions, so it is a win-win for me. Only my final render file is a bit larger, not all my raw video files. Thanks for the video! Cheers!

For KZbin with a nice internet connection... I just upload a ProRes export. When I don't have good internet or need to upload quickly, I export ProRes then encode to H264 or H265 in Shutter Encoder using the CPU. I set a CQ quality target of about 18 and the exports look absolutely incredible vs any of the hardware encoded videos.

I find that upscaling is necessary for my motovlog footage because any clips with a lot of motion (i.e. from my motorbike) look awful in KZbin with blocky-looking video at 1080P when YT streams that video in the AVC1 codec. If I upscale to 1440P or 4K at a decent bitrate, YT streams the video with the VP09 codec which looks loads better 👍 Large files/rendering times are the result, but for me the image quality is worth it.

Thanks for the video. I do a lot of mountain biking videos and quality setting under render is something that's always given me issues. I shoot in 4k/30fps on my GoPro. For the quality I'll push the restrict to 250,000. It just seems like a good catch all. Sometimes when I don't push the number so high everything on the sides of the video looks like I just engaged the warp drive on my bike. But doing this it seems to make objects (trees/grass) a bit clearer/more visible on the sides. I may have to go back in and do some playing around using lower settings. As always appreciate the videos.

Hi, thanks for the stack of very useful videos. In this one you've suggested that you could upscale an existing 1080p timeline to 4k using Custom settings. That seems to work fine but I've noticed elsewhere that others describe from the outset to first set the Project Settings to 3840x2160 or "4k" then drop your 1080p media in as normal and use Superscale. Then Export / Deliver at 3840x2160. But their method may conflict with smooth editing especially on modest workstations obviously. Many people recommend that in order to obtain a better KZbin result they always Deliver in 4k even though the actual media is 1080p, apparently because KZbin uses a superior codec called VP9 if it identifies an upload as 4k. I realise that you are using a 4k camera anyway. But do you happen to know whether if you use 1080p you can get better results if you go the Project Settings > 4k Superscale route or is the result of simply upscaling in Deliver just as good. I'm using 18.1.2 Studio on an Alienware windows 11 Ryzen 7 5800H RTX3060 32GB 2x SSD's laptop so I could do either method. Thanks.

Answered my own question with some more testing. Saved an existing 1080p Project as a new Project, changed Project Settings to UHD and included Image Scaling > "Scale Entire Image To Fit" for both Input and Output Scaling. Then selected video files in Media Pool and applied Super Scale 2x with Sharpness on High & Noise Reduction on Medium (n.b. you can't select Super Scale by selecting clips directly in a Multicam timeline). Delivered UHD MP4 h.265 50,000 kb/s constant bit rate (twice PAL 25fps) with Advanced ticked both Force Settings To Highest Quality and Force Debayer to Highest Quality. Appreciably better quality than straight deliver without Super Scale especially compared to a normal 1080p uploaded directly to KZbin. Takes much longer to render but still lower than real time. Studio version needed for Super Scale obviously and the GPU being RTX3060 or equivalent probably needed. Hey, if you're thinking of getting Studio you will love its Voice Isolation function.

2:31 I found that H264 is good for longer videos as doesn't take that long to render and it uses the CPU, H265 uses the GPU which takes longer on long videos only just realised this when i was trying to render some dead space videos which are an hour long and resolve said it would take 2 hours to render on the H265 but when i switched back to H264 it only took 40 mins. Now that being said i do have a 2070 anyone who has a newer GPU will probably be a lot faster in H265, for now, i use H265 for smaller videos.

Some reasons why you should not use h264 or h265 for rendering: 1. I like to separate the rendering process from compressing the image. It renders faster and you have to check the render anway. Quality control. 2. After rendering a ProRes or DNxHR master you can use external tools like handbrake to convert the files to h264. If the file size is to big you don´t have to render your moviue again. You just have to convert the already rendered DNxHR file again. Time saver! 3. the h264, h265 codec in DaVinci is not as good as handbrake or shutter encoder. You can pixelpeep and test it yourself
@MrAlexTech
@MrAlexTech Жыл бұрын
Solid information, thanks! :) I need spend some more time with handbrake! But do you do that for KZbin videos?! Seems overkill as the YT compression will just likely mitigate any gains.
@allenpayne9182
@allenpayne9182 Жыл бұрын
True. But no matter if it is Instagram, Facebook or KZbin. I always try to render the best image. 4k for KZbin because the 1080p verison wlll look better, too. I think this is important. And "rendering" and "compressing" at once will NOT save you time. As I wrote. Better split it up. Render the fiolm in Resolve. Later compress the file. Those are two processes and IMo should be handled as two. You can set up a preset in handbrake or shutter encoder, so you just have to drop the file in. Select your preset and hit render. It is 3 clicks. I know people are beginng for "the BEST youtube" render settings. but "the BEST" is to render a ProRes or DNxHR file. KZbin / Vimeo also are fine with ProRes and DNxHR. If your video is just 1 or 2 minutes.. .you can upload a DNxHR instead of h264. If you are doing vlog, sure upload a h264 straight out of Resovle. But If you are working on a commercial or music video and want best quality... please do not render a h264 file in Resolve.
@MrAlexTech
@MrAlexTech Жыл бұрын
@@allenpayne9182 I think it makes for an interesting discussion tbf, but it's not my intent of this video. Resolve is available for literally everyone (including Uncle Bob making his fishing videos or Aunta Donna making her cupcakes!). Adding additional processes for arguably very minimal gains (especially following KZbin compression) just overcomplicates it and adds barriers to the process. I have no doubt DNx etc will give you better results, but is it the best process?! I'd argue not, especially for largest proportion of Resolve users who are free amateur users (i consider myself in this group - although with Studio). If this video was a 30 minute explainer about the benefits of DNxHR and an introduction into the intricacies of Handbrake. It would have the opposite effect of my intent i.e. it would be much more likely to discourage people, rather than encourage them to get stuck in!
@allenpayne9182

@@SystemParanoia what you wrote is wrong. H265 will take much longer time to render than DNxHR.

@@SystemParanoia DNxHR will also be rendered by your GPU and because of the design it renders way faster. H265 is the slowest to render. Maybe you are rendering to the same sdd and got bottlenecked.
