None at all. It's magnificent roofing material. It actually looks BETTER now than when I installed it. It's dulling up a bit which makes it look even MORE realistic like real slate. It's key to install it just as the instructions say. I hand-nailed mine with traditional double-dipped hot galvanized nails. You'll not be disappointed, that's for sure!

I believe you had a ORGANIC ( saw dust based) roof. The better, and now standard for asphalt roofing is fiberglass base. Sorry to hear that you are one of the many customers to have trouble with the shingle industries experiment in thick “lifetime” organic roofing. For the money a fire rated fiberglass roof is a great bet. It will last about 20-50years. I love the look of slate, but most homes can’t take the weight, so the synthetic product should work very well. You should not have any trouble as long as you used a quality roofing Ice and Rain guard like Tamco Moisture Guard Plus.

Mark M I wish Mark. My "fire rated fiberglass roof" is only 13 years old. It will need replacing within 2 years. More than 25% of the roofs in my subdivision have already been replaced due to deterioration, wind damage and more. I lost two shingles in a storm about two months ago...I went up to fix the problem and was shocked to see how much deterioration had happened. The shingles were quite literally falling apart. These were rated at 25 years, and in 13 they are already approaching the end of their life. Seeing that these were builder installed I don't think I have much recourse except to suck it up and replace the roof early. I'd love to get the DaVinci installed, but I don't think I can swing it financially... :(

Mark M Mark, I believe (I actually know for a fact) that you're wrong. My asphalt shingle roof was made by IKO. I still have the brochure describing it. It was fiberglass. Fiberglass mats don't have any impact on why many asphalt shingles are failing. I'm doing a huge investigative report on this topic. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, GAF, and Certainteed have REFUSED to answer my questions. What does that tell you? I'm confident that my research will show that the addition of too much powdered limestone and/or fly ash into the shingles is making them too brittle with too little asphalt to bond to the ceramic granules. What brands of shingles are made with saw dust? Share that with me please and paste URLS right in your response to point us to them.

Ask the Builder IKO has BOTH organic and fiberglass shingles. What was the Warranty term for your roof? Do you have a wrapper from the install of the roof? Did you send a shingle in to IKO? That shingle does not look like a fiberglass shingle. I rip off literally tons of shingles every week and from the video I do not think that is a fiberglass shingle. It does not have the “fibers” sticking out of the sides and the type of deterioration looks like a organic shingle to me. The trouble with this communication is that you have TOUCHED the roof and I have not. I would say you would know best because you have that advantage. I don't have ANY stake in this conversation other than understanding a roofing problem. All of the trouble I have seen with shingles has been from poor bonding, ripping on the tabs. And curling, like what you have. You seem to have fixed the problem with your roof, and it looks great! Hopefully the industry can fix the trouble with the asphalt roofing so many other people can get more life out of the roofs. The information about Organic roofing using wood (sawdust) came from a training booklet from Certain Teed. I do not have that booklet anymore and with all the lawsuits about Organic roofing it is hard to nail down and real answers from manufactures, but I did find this link quite quickly on the internet… greenecosolutions.net/reflective-roofing/history-shingle-types/

WreckDiver99 That sucks! Why did the shingle blow off? Did the roofer use a air gun or hand nail? Often what happens with a air nailed roof it gets nailed too high and then the shingle will "flop" and pull itself out of the nail's grasp. When a gun is used the nail can go into the shingle too much and that will make the grasp of the nail poor. Do you have a three tab type shingle or a laminated type? The roofer that installed the roof should stand behind the install, even after 13 years. How large is your roof, maybe the installer will split the cost with you. What ever happens DO NOT LET THE ROOFER PUT A NEW ROOF OVER YOUR OLD ROOF.

Mark M I've interviewed many roofing company executives over the years for past columns of mine. *None* have ever said they incorporated saw dust in their shingles. Wood chips perhaps, but not saw dust. Years ago *organic* shingles contained cotton. It was the major component of the felt. Snow and ice guards. When the slabs of snow slide down the roof, these break up the pieces so you don't get hit with an iceberg.

Mike Graveman They also hold big sheets of snow and ice and allow it to melt instead of sliding down and causing damage. They are mostly used over doors, driveways, and sidewalks.

I am confused, the green laminate roof you show is an organic otherwise known as felt based shingle. It is not a fiberglass. I roofed for 30 plus years. I have forgotten more than you know. Don't argue with me. And yes, the fake slate products look great, and I have installed them as well. There have been massive failures with the earliest versions of them. Davinci is ok, but not my fav.

It is a disgrace that you replaced a genune real slate roof in good condition on a building you said was beautiful with cheap asphalt shingles. That depreciated the resale value of the building tremendously. You have no taste and simply want to take the easy cheap typical contractor route.

Bill, I clearly stated in the video starting at 1:25 that it was a mistake due to inexperience. I was 24 years old at the time. I feel your criticism of me having no taste is unfounded as you can see the roof behind me in the video that I installed by hand. How about you share some of the mistakes that you made at age 24?
