Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is an important French composer of the late Baroque period who revolutionized French opera. Also known for his harpsichord works, Rameau wrote three books of Pièces de Clavecin, containing pieces with such programmatic titles as Les Tendres Plaintes, La Villageoise, Le Rappel des Oiseaux, and La Triumphante.
One of the most famous of these pieces is Les Cyclopes, named after the race of one-eyed giants in Greek mythology and portrayed in Homer’s Odyssey. A complex and spirited piece in its original form, these attributes are only increased in this arrangement of Les Cyclopes for two guitars by Sergio Assad with the introduction of the hocket technique.
As an example of the enduring legacy of classical music, one passage in Les Cyclopes (1:54) may sound familiar to fans of the artist Sting.
This performance is part of a concert given at Fried Music in Alhambra, CA and recorded by Louis Ng at Lenson Productions.
