Tell Tails are not worthless. They might not be a major source of information, and certainly not detrimental to a sail trip, but they are not worthless. They are very helpful in tweaking and fine tuning your sail configuration during a sail to gain small amounts of speed to become more efficient. Likely more useful during racing than during a pleasure cruise. On a long trip like your boat was built for, that small seemingly insignificant increase in speed could shave off massive amounts of time from a long trip, or a lifetime of sailing.

Them's Black Tip sharks, pretty easy identification, good pictures of them! Usually very curious sharks, but generally not aggressive. While they are generally non-aggressive, they are responsible for about 16% of the shark attack in and around florida every year. Their flesh is considered high quality for food, but are considered Vulnerable by the IUCN. Black Tip sharks are so named because most of their fins are tipped in black. They were not getting cute with the naming schemes that day...

I'm glad you reworked the rigging for your dinghy. That's one of the things I mentioned when you got it and hooked it up was sling angle to redistribute the weight, and stability. So, I don't know if it helped in that department, but I sure like this a lot better. Before retiring I ran an overhead crane for about 27 years so sling angle is drilled into my brain. Anyway, sure love watching you create stuff. Reminds me of grandpa, a farmer his whole life. Something broke, we made another one. Yeah, those Blacktip sharks can be pesky buggers. I love your philosophical words of wisdom, life lessons. Don't sweat the petty stuff, just pet the sweaty stuff.

Interesting comment. Just to broaden the discussion, have a look into the ‘Fail Fast’ design and innovation technique. It permits testing without heavy investment. Doug simply uses a similar approach. Of course this doesn’t work for things like nuclear reactors, but for many, many other ‘products’ it is a fast, fun and cheap approach.

@@SVSeeker Sure! You're not mistaken if you has done a nothing 😇 everyone makes mistakes, me too. I think it's better use others' experience. And Doug I don't like those stripes towing this boat. The stripes will tear from the edges, and you take off those rollers was bad idea. Winch of metal cable is good for this purpose. Cable winding is better and reliable (I guess).

Crowned/convex pulleys are used to keep a flat belt tracking, not sure if it would work with a tow strap, you might need to make it rubber to grip the strap. Cool seeing the Blue Angels.

I thought I was on to something with single braid but on a 4 to 1 main sheet it was instantly hard and got harder and harder to pull the line in and in no time in any wind you needed the winch so it became a jib sheet on a single tack I would get 3 or 4 hockels at the block which made you have to go forward to get them out now its holding up a swing in the back yard and it works perfectly !

Your right Doug, I have learned in my old age that no one really fucken knows, even if they say they have experience, situations change, the situation may not be the same as what they experienced. I have learned this with my daughters, millennials. They both went to college and the future is very much iffy for them both, and I feel compelled to tell them to do this or that, but I have learned to shut up. They are on their own path now, and I must leave them to their fates. I can give them technical advice, show them how to do something, but the big questions, the big decisions, that must be theirs and theirs alone. My x wife is always criticizing them and its only driven them away from her, I chose to stop telling them what to do around age 18 to 19. I was not always successful and Im gen X so I can be rude, and crass but now they are in their 20s and I don't tell them what to do and if I say anything at all I tell them they can do it, they are smart and they will figure it out, or if anything, when they are freaking out, I tell them it will be ok and we will figure it out together. Its hard, letting your kids learn things the hard way, or even letting take the chance to learn the hard way, it goes against every instinct I have as a parent, but it must be that way.

I have been on very similar journeys building boats car and taking on jobs that people say why ? I have failed I have asked myself many questions (can you really do this?) rested and started again. It is the discovery and the journey I enjoy. My new journey is going back to sailing and after two years of planning many many phone calls designing parts, I picked up my beautifully built Catboat built by students at a boat building school in France. I designed a Tabernacle which was built for me it failed on it's first time out with the students sailing they were very so upset. Only because the builder did not read the plan properly. I told them it was nothing and it could be fixed which is what I will do. Doug you are right in everything you say why worry about the small things just move on and sort them out. I am so excited to start my new journey sailing with like minded people but before that can happen, lots to do. Now my job is to get her ready for the sea.

That halyard eating property of Seeker's current way to hoist the big sail was predictable to say the least - which ain't no biggy of course. To change that permanently, You might have to invent a remotely controlled wire drum pulling an all- wire halyard for the big sail over the top and then right at the foot of the main mast into the drum to get rid of all those crazy deviations and curves and angles that poor thing has to take until it gets to the fancily modified fancy Harken bigboat winch in the pilot house (which I loved from Your first try to hydraulize it by the way). You'll figure something out I reckon. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Been a long time but trying to catch up. I would say the tell tails in your case wont do you much. The only thing I can think of is if you are in light wind, no fuel and hardly moving. That can help you fine tune your sail to eek-out a little more momentum. But you can then just punch a few. I'd have to agree with you probably useless, not sure if you would get more out of them over the time it would take you to put them in... Looks like two species of sharks, one is clearly a black tip, some of them look to be grey reef sharks. They can have darker fin tips also. The black tips look like they have been dipped in black paint. You will find Grey, Black tip, Bull, and Tiger sharks in that area...

Tell tails ARE NOT designed to tell you which way the wind is coming from. For those who look, they WILL tell you how effectively the sail is trimmed. If it is too loose, the inner and outer tell tale will be about level with each other...as you trim in they will separate with showing you the amount of difference in air velocity on the inside compared to the outside. The more load you put on the sheet, the more power you are adding to the sail, until you go too far....then, you will see one of them show backward air flow...(not sure which one...outer I think)...that is beyond optimum trim...too close hauled. The wind gizzie will tell you general wind relative direction. The tell tale is for trimming...if you don't care...don't put them up ..if you want to KNOW, put them up and learn from them...
