I sincerely wish that every video posted to KZbin could be this well formatted, useful, and informative. Outstanding presentation gentlemen, very direct and to the point with focus upon the measurable facts and emphasis of observable data sets. The only possible critique which I could offer would have been for you to test your standards from various incremental lengths ranging from 12" inches, 18" inches, 24" inches, 36" inches, and 48" inches until you acquire a zero "0" or _null_ reading to determine at what range the bulbs lose their overall effectiveness. I hope to see more videos of this very high level of quality content and caliber of expertise from you in the future. *BRAVO* , phenomenal video!

Nice to see a demonstration that different CFLs and wattages have different outputs for specific applications. Typically on the internet people without solar meters say "coil uvb bad" lumping every single one into a single absolute. Glad you pointed out how much of a difference the dome makes. Deep domes work very well. I've been banned from Facebook reptile groups for posting pictures of my setups with mercury vapor bulbs and cfls when the UVI was actually spot on.

@11:18 If you have 50uW/cm2 at 12in, and then upgrade to a bulb that delivers 104 uW at 12in, I'm not sure you are really going to deliver 50uW from that bulb at double the distance due to the inverse square law. You should be getting around 7uW /cm2. Luminosity drops off fast. The only thing that could be affecting that is the metal cone that's preventing some scattering but once out of the bell, it would behave normally and still drop off quite a bit.

I found a bearded dragon in my yard about 2 weeks ago and have been caring for him since. I think he belonged to neighbors who moved away recently. I bought the 40 gallon tank bearded kit for him with 10.0 UVB desert bulb and basking lamp. Questions: 1) What do you recommend to keep him warm at night, since he needs on-off light cycles? I hear there is a night time bulb. I ordered the ceramic heat bulb, but it seems dangerous to me. Some say a temp 60 - 65 F is ok, and I've been keeping the room around 65 F. Thank you.

Great explanation, and demonstrations really do help! I understood reptiles needed UV, but I have a hard time figuring out how much, what the numbers mean, which type to buy, etc. I have a hard time reading blocks of text to understand it all. Can't stay focused, mind wanders (there's a reason I don't drive!). I've stuck to mainly nocturnal reptiles where UV isn't nearly as important because I've been afraid of messing up with UV. Many animals benefit from UV, not just reptiles. Birds, for example. A lot of bird owners don't know that UV lighting is EXTREMELY beneficial to their health. /absolutelylovebirds
@suitedzombie98465 жыл бұрын
I have 5 Northern Cricket Frogs (particularly warty) in a temporary 5.5g. Most Frogs are semi-aquatic and nocturnal, however, with my experience, these Frogs seem to be a lot more terrestrial, rock-dwelling, diurnal species, and they particularly seem to enjoy basking on their rocks underneath their UVA/UVB bulbs. Plus, the UV lighting seems to be a lot better for the mosses and live plants in their paludarium, as they have been a lot more lush and green, and it seems as if I've been having to trim a lot more often than when I first had them... All I'm saying is that I do provide UV lighting for most of the herps I keep, and I recommend you do as well. I hope this helps!

Thank you for this information. I have a bearded dragon and was wondering what would the reading be for a 40 gallon tank with a mesh top? Can these bulbs be used for pet birds too? Would they still work at the recommended 18 to 20 inches from the bird? From tests I have seen, at that distance, the UV is almost completely lost.

Good explanation. I had arcadia pro t5 6% 24 watt but it was too much for my cal king. He hided from it ALL the time. So now I have a regular tl lamp. I will give him deewnitly UVB in like 2 years. Then he's 3 years young and I will be moved to an apartment where he has heat on his chamber. So I can put away my ceramic heat amitter and use a 5.0UVB on the right. So I think it's not bad if I give it to him again when he's grown up? I can't do it now and that arcadia 6% is too much. He hided all the time then. Like now with the normal light he explores much more and is more active. I even went to an exotic vet for this🤦♂️ he's perfectly healthy but the UVB was probably to much it was 6% 24 watt.

Compact fluorescents are a poor choice. They deliver a very narrow cone of UVB. If the animal is outside of this cone, they receive very little. It is a strong recommendation to use t5 high output bulbs and fixtures. Compact fluorescents are notoriously short lived, and carry a history of harming reptiles. Also, the solarmeter 6.5 UVI meter is considered the standard for measuring beneficial UV rays in bulbs. The solarmeter 6.2 UVB though helpful, seems to have been dropped for the UVI reading. I am very happy to see the UV recommendation for crepuscular species. I wish they also tested t5 bulbs and more reputable brands such as Arcadia.

I've noticed bull and gopher snakes seem to really enjoy uv (more so than just led/non uv light which they also seem to enjoy) even if they absolutely don't need uvb or uva. I'd recommend people with north America colubrids seriously consider using at least a uva light in their enclosures for a more active snake. UVB absolutely doesn't hurt either.

Ok cool I thought my UVB bulb was broken with its 13 watts of "weak" visible light output. Just started providing UVB for my snakes after I fell out of touch with how the hobby is changing: 10 years ago, snake tanks can be "too big", snakes don't need light, and even a shoe box and paper towel setup will suffice. I didn't go to THAT extent, but I still had the "20 gallon minimum/no UVB needed" mindset until recently
