Here in the states, its completely different, for example, I've had some new neighbors moved in next door like 1 or 2 years ago, and they never said hi or even made eye contact. Before unification with the north of Yemen in 1990, we, in the south of Yemen had law and order and a well run country. Men and women worked, drove cars, etc, etc..... We had women in professional jobs like Doctors, nurses, engineering, working in banks as well as government offices. Then, in came the unification with the north and it all went down hill. They effectively taken us over and called us communists and planted in evil groups with hate towards the south as a whole. I am older than you, however, if you experienced what we had in the past before 1990, it was way better than a unified Yemen. Sure, our politicians in the south were not perfect and have made mistakes, with in fighting (wars every 5 years). The biggest mistake they made was uniting with the north without due diligence.

The drove cars, and we had law and order and a proper run country. OK, so the South was governed by a bunch of communist leaders and they made many mistakes, but whey you compare the situation between back then and after 1990, then, you will conclude that it was way better before unification. We had well educated nation and Qaat was only allowed once a week which was on a Thursday night. Friday was a day off (Jumaa). They were Great days and every one was happy and there was no wide poverty as you've seen in the last 30 odd years.
