How to know you're winning at Call of Cthulhu: Are you at least partially alive? Undeath does not count. Do you still have freedom? Not locked in dungeon, jail, a basement, or most likely turn of the century sanitorium. Do you still have control of your character and its thoughts? This is harder than you might think, what ever you do don't let the fish-man show you his family photos. If you can still answer "yes" in a human language to all three of these questions you are not loosing... yet. Fun game though.

As someone who has been playing in a group for almost two years now, including having gone through the campaign "Terror on the Orient Express", this game is great for anyone who wants a mystery focused horror adventure. Especially one where negotiating information out of the NPCs you meet is just as important as fighting monsters. And for those interested in the game but not the time period, there's rules for the modern day and the 1800s in the books, as well as numerous first and third party time period books. Invictus is set in the Roman Empire, Dark ages the early medieval, Achtung! Cthulhu for the second world war... And while technically not a Call of Cthulhu game anymore, Delta Green combines espionage thriller and the mythos together.

Great rundown! I'm a big big fan of call of cthulhu. One thing that I think it does well is that, if you're an inexperienced GM (known in the game as Keeper of Arcane Lore) it's relatively easy to make stuff up if you have a general knowledge of the rules and a familiarity with the setting. My first ever game that I ran as GM was call of cthulhu and I forgot to print the stat sheet for a dude who resurrected himself through arcane forces but was still able to approximate a decently difficult battle scene based on generic combat rules and what I knew about the world. It's also great for trying character builds you might not expect to work. My friend really wanted to have a high "library use" stat, so we made him a librarian and it surprisingly came in super handy when he had to dig through some old county records while his cohorts distracted the other people in the room

Can't wait for more of these sorts of formatted videos. I completely agree with your Stop Playing DnD video and I've been feverishly looking for new systems like Shadowrun, WoD, and others. I'm excited to potentially learn about more systems as you teach us about them.

Call of Cthulhu exemplifies the Three Laws of Cthulhu. 1. You can't win. 2. You can't even break even. 3. And once you know about the Mythos, you can't drop out of the game.

I will always love my WW1 German veteran aspiring to be a doctor, racked by trauma and PTSD (explaining his low sanity score). He was the bruiser of the group, while still being knowledgeable about medical information, and being good at research. I love playing D&D, but I *adore* CoC.
