Love to see you cover more non-PF things. I think its great if people have a favorite system like 5e or PF but I think they would benefit from playing other systems. I do not think they'll be converted to diehards of another system but I think theres something in every system we can learn from. Just like an artist who only paints takes classes in say sculpting theres something we can takeaway from how these other systems handle things that we can then apply to our dominant system. FATE, Savage Worlds, Genesys, etc these all provide something different. If you wanna see something even more different check out some diceless systems like the old Deadlands RPG that used poker hands instead of dice rolls

I'm mainly a Cthulhu player, and while it does take a long while, I usually use the optional point buy rules instead. One of the strengths of this system is, while you are playing just humans, you are able to make the character exactly as they are in your brain. Because of the specialization of the skill system, your character will be far different and useful at much different things than another. Everyone feels useful because of this specialization, which is one of the reasons I love this system. So, yeah, point buy all the way for me and my group. Great video as always!

I tried CoC and it was not my jam as a system (the themes are pretty good). I think it's too complicated as a system for what it wants to do. For this kind of themes, I prefer lighter rules. Precisely because min maxing doesn't make sense, having so many numbers and mechanics associated with the character is more a burden than a good thing. Still, nice to see you cover more games. TTRPGs get better the more systems you know :)
@Nonat1s2 жыл бұрын
It's really unfortunate that character creation is as in-depth as it is. The actual gameplay is incredibly simple once you're actually playing, but I can totally understand the aversion to the game's setup.
@aventuraenlafogata6492 жыл бұрын
@@Nonat1s Our CoC GM really made it simple at the table and very very narrative, which was fun. We almost never used the system's crunch... Which further reinforced me that the crunch that CoC was not important for a good gameplay experience, and therefore using a lighter system as Spiralis could be better. I love crunch (I mean, I love Pathfinder2e) but I think in horror specifically, crunch gets in the way.

What did you use to fill out the character sheet? I like how it calculated things for you. Could be useful for new players.
@RicksPoker Жыл бұрын
I would have spent a bit more time talking about which skills are important in Call of Cthulhu (CoC). These are: -- Dodge. Super important. Weapons do a tonne of damage relative to your hit points, and being able to dodge damage is critical. -- Psychology. Sounds dull. Mainly used for "Detect Lies" rolls. When trying to solve a mystery, would you like to know when people are lying to you? Also used for knowing when people are upset / excited / etc. and trying to hide it. I like my characters to start with at least 30 or 40% in this skill. -- Library Use, Spot Hidden, & Listen. CoC is a game where you have to find clues, and these skills make it less likely to overlook something important. History, Accounting, Occult, Law, & Read Lips could also fall in this category. -- Charm, Fast Talk, Intimidate, & Persuade. These are skills to get NPC's to talk to you. Be good at at least one of these. -- Fighting( Brawl ), & Firearms ( Any-Gun-Type ). At least a couple people in your party should be able to fight well. -- First Aid, Medicine, & Psychoanalysis. First Aid is for battle field healing; Medicine is for speeding recovery of hit points; and Psychoanalysis is for speeding recovery of Sanity (the OTHER hit points in CoC). I like my party to have a couple people with at least 35% in some of these skills. -- Locksmith, Stealth, & Disguise. Often 'thief' type skills are useful. -- Languages. A lot of CoC campaigns have you travelling the world, and reading obscure books. Some language skills are useful. *** The skills listed on your character sheet are not the only ones. Read Lips, Demolitions, Hypnotism, or any other skill your GM allows may be taken. Finally, to be 'good' at something, you don't need your skill to be 80% plus. 30 to 40% are decent, and 50% or higher is good, and such skills will improve as you play. If you want to do another video on CoC, talking about the skills in detail, would be cool. Lots of videos give the basics or rolling up a character, a lot fewer get into the details of skills. Warm regards, Rick.

Love it! Character creation is the first step in my process of learning any new system, so more of these for other systems would be great! I'm a fan of Upwind: The RPG's system and character creation. Players name all of their character's abilities and decide what effects they have, and all "encounters" are decided with bidding playing cards from your hand and trying to out-bluff the GM to make for a very narrative game. An extra plus is that the setting is all about air ships, sky islands, and teslapunk.

Yooo! Bring on the CoC stuff! I've been getting really into this game as of late and will be all for it. I've never really cared for the cthulhu mythos (even ignoring its problematic origin), and always hearing how likely your character is to die or go insane really turned me off of the Call of Cthulhu game. After watching this though, it actually seems like it'd be a good system to run a more low key, slice of life type game, and just minimize the combat and supernatural stuff. Kind of like the game Night in the Woods. Heck, you could still use the Sanity system if your character works in retail or customer service (if you know, then you know...).

The single greatest CoC game I ever played was a one shot. My friend, the GM pre made characters. Each one was in a sealed manila envelope with only a simple word on the top: Leader, Support, Brains, etc. We each picked one and he started the set up: You and your companions and traveling in your van on dark and stormy night. You see a strange figure appears in the middle of the road, you swerve to miss them, but end up hitting a tree." We now open our envelopes and see who we are playing: Freddie Jones Daphne Blake Velma Dinkley Norville "Shaggy" Rogers Scoobert Doo
