I actually like the reprints. The reprinted races are fitting for the setting and not everybody has a thousand dollars to spend on buying every D&D book, so its nice that you have all you need for a theros adventure in one book.

Exactly I don’t want to buy Ravnica because I’m just not a fan of the setting but Theros seems really cool (yes I am the PJO nerd as mentioned at the start of the video) so the Minotaur and centaur will be to me brand new races. If it was a PHB race or even a VGtM race then I’d have some issues (technically tritons aren’t a reprint since the new ones have dark vision but I know that’s very nitpicky)

@@frankieramos1748 actually Tritons with night vision have been a common rule change. It just doesn't make sense. How would a Triton see underwater if they don't have dark vision? Plus a lot of the Triton abilities are very situational, so a buff is not out of place. Is like what happened to orcs, they were one of two races that had a negative, so they changed it in eberron

Cractor yeah I know people have home brewed dark vision on tritons which is a frankly stupid oversight probably in the vein of “we can just give EVERYONE dark vision” 100m down in the water and it is pitch black so any mildly deep ocean dweller needs dark vision just now they officially have it in a source book. Also not sure but I heard it changed the regular triton too on dnd beyond but not sure if that’s errata for VGtM or just because dndbeyond have made the decision to only show the new better triton. But yeah I don’t mind the “reprints” of these as they actually make a change that everyone already used so it can be AL legal now or if your DM is a tyrant against homebrew. If they had the tritons without dark vision in this then I would be complaining same if they had the orcs with the negatives in Ebberon but since there are slight changes I don’t mind

Honestly at this point poison is a joke. Practically every damn monster has resistance to it, if not outright immunity. Even for PCs, there are so many spells and items dedicated or partially dedicated to fucking over poison. (Heros Feast, Lesser Restoration and the Paladins lay on hands comes to mind). I think someone at Wizards just hates green dragons.

I'm excited for this book, its fits super well with my MTG campaign. As the forever DM I started a campaign in ravnica and then through a series of events trying to solve the mysteries of a new cult forming as an "11th guild" my players and the BBEG we're transported by a device that acts as a synthetic planeswalker medium. Problem is they cant control it, they're able to go home but when they use it trying to find where the villian went they go to a random plane. Theyve been to innistrad, Kamigawa, Zendikar, New Phyrexia and most recently Tarkir. After buying it think I'll use this plane as the final stop where my BBEG ended up when they separated. Get the Gods of theros involved and cause some interplanetary havoc. Might unlock the device and allow them to bring all their allies and friends from all the other planes to come help stop the BBEG. Also as far as the Oath of Glory being underpowered goes, Nothing a little homebrew cant fix.

The Oath of Glory feels more like a strongman to me than a traditional hero. It makes me want to run a campaign centered around the ancient Olympics, because that's where Glory would really shine. This is the kind of varsity frat bro who can win a chariot race on foot, while carrying the chariot AND horses, and casts Charm Person by flexing. His abs are his holy symbol and he worships at a shrine consisting of his high school championship trophies and a mirror. This dude is an absolute meathead, he knows it, he loves it, and he knows you love it too. This class plus the gladiator background (for performance proficiency) is a match made in heaven, and I can't wait to run this obnoxious narcissist in a future campaign.

Mounted combat focused characters don't really work so well, due to a few issues. First one being that either they a) have a standard mount, which dies in one hit once you get to mid levels, or b) have a souped up mount that levels with them, which is usually overpowered, especially at low levels (like hello cavalier from pathfinder that starts with a heavy warhorse at level 1, which is more powerful than an entire 1st level party, and it levels with them). and second problem being that this is DUNGEONS and dragons, and mounted stuff tends to be really difficult to get value out of when your in narrow hallways in dungeons where your horse can barely fit.

@@Klaital1 There's also the strange thing in 5e where, RAW, a medium creature has to crawl around on their mount to pick their square. Also, by default, you can't actually do a good old cavalry charge, since your mount is usually taking a seperate turn from you, meaning you can't just walk up and attack, you have to ready an attack on your turn after crawling to the right space of your mount, walk up, then use your readied attack, meaning only one attack, and no other reaction that turn. On the other hand, Kobolds on mounts get Advantage on everything, or at least are constantly cancelling disadvantage, and can carry a pack of dire corgis to ride on to replace all of the inevitable casualties.

But the rest of my group is pickier, they like Theros and no ravnica. So I mean there are lots of reasons to buy one and not the other. Like your dm wants to run Greek fantasy and not ravnica.

I really love Theros. It’s such a cool world, I love the gods and the lore, and all the crazy nonsense. We finally have a setting that encourages DM’s and players to make an all out crazy heroes versus godly monsters campaign where it doesn’t matter how crazy strong the players are, because that’s the point. Ok, but seriously. It’s an awesome setting. I’d love to run a Theros campaign for my players.

Fun fact! Harps were not widely used in both medieval and ancient times, as they were often too cumbersome to move, too fragile and hard to make. Thus, you were more likely to find people playing a smaller version, which could be held and moved quite easily and which would open your Bard up to make all kinds of "You calling me a Lyre?" puns.

Bruh your words about losing steam sometime during Mark of Athena hit me hard. Even more so after Blood of Olympus where it's supposed to be THE endgame where all the heroes and gods come together to kick giant ass. Instead of the entire Heroes of Olympus books showcasing the urgency and nitty gritty consequences of war like in The Last Olympian, it just...fell flat,and felt like an everyday quest to retrieve the Athena Parthenos and hoping everything goes right afterwards. I could see a dex based oath of Ancient's Paladin and really laying into the magic resistance ability. Plus it would provide a naturey feeling build option that uses the Saters stat buffs. I think the main reason everyone thinks the Satyr is broken is because it is considered Fey not humanoid. Which means you can't cast any spells that target a humanoid like Hold Person on them, you need to hit them with Hold Monster instead. And even if you hit them with that they still got the natural magic resistance for those spells.

The Satyr being Fey with magic resistance is actually quite strong. Now hold/charm/dominate does not work as well as advantage on all spell saves. It makes them quite the threat against most caster style enemies, which I think comes up a bit more often over a campaign usually then a yuan-ti's poison immunity.

The trick is Oath of Glory's spell list and the fact none of the abilities get in the way of Paladin as a whole. Plus, Bear Totem Barbarian, Glory Paladin, Brawny feat, and Goliath can make you the greatest Grappler in the universe, giving you a massive lift and carry, capable of lifting frankly ridiculous things with ease and theoretically just yeet MFers into low orbit with the power of Lucha

Most games use that rule without even realising that it's incorrect. I've yet to meet a DM who doesn't treat a one as an auto fail. That goes for a lot of rules, actually. For example, did you know that a Perception check doesn't actually exist? It's a Wisdom check that you apply your proficiency bonus to, if youre trained in perception. It sounds nitpicky, but it's actually a HUGE problem for a lot of players, because it limits how they think their skill proficiencies can be used

It’s pretty much just meant to be a Greek/Roman mythology inspired dnd setting so that’s why elves and all that other stuff isn’t in there. I personally loved reading the book and learning the lore. I’m actually about to DM a campaign soon.

I've only seen the movie, never read the Percy Jackson books. Most of my Greek and Roman Mythology understanding comes from history, mythology, and literature classes. Besides various articles, documentaries, books, websites, etc. that I have consumed over the decades.

Reprinting some of the old material like races is a good thing though - not everyone has every splatbook, nor can they afford to.
