I will add: Buy military boots or even hiking boots (brown or black) for fantasy larps far superior to dress shoes. For more advanced costuming, literally KZbin is your friend and there are tons of articles online. In the US it is easier to make a costume than in Europe due to the sheer volume of LARPcrafters in the US. Make sure to have bags; several of them in leather for your stuff. Also holsters for your weapons.

While looking for LARPs I was surprised at the variations of how long they run. My home LARP ran from 5pm Friday to 5pm Sunday once a month, and some players were thrilled to arrive early and stay late. Other local regional LARPs ran Friday 8pm to Sunday noon with limited or no roleplaying after a certain point Sunday morning. Others, especially parlor LARPs, ran for six to eight hours once a month, with event fees as low as $2 per person.

I don't know if you went to an established game or some type of one time "experience". That said, established games with a loyal player base are normally your best bet. Also look out for gaming conventions. Sometimes there are short intro style larp events (normally a couple hours long). Though fair warning milage may very as some are well planned & produced while others are a couple people trying out an idea.

Was part of a WoD parlour LARP group for several years. I missed the glory days of 200+ people a session but it was still alot of fun at around 30-40 people. Wish I had the time to do any LARP, few more years until I can again.

I have only played WoD with like 8 people and a GM i can only imagine that the world may explode when 200+ person combat would happen. I just don't understand how your still not going right now. (not saying that kind of game was bad just my experience of the simple combat taking long periods of time doesn't scale to in my mind)

As a European (specifically Nordic) LARP:er, seeing Amarican LARP culture is always kinda wild. Most stuff in the video applies pretty well, but some things, especially about larger fantasy LARPs could be very different. For example, large LARPs in Sweden are typically only active in the summer months, with only one or two events a year. These large outdoor events will host several hundred people and last for a few days with gametime being all time. We go hard in portraying our characters at all times and typically value emersion very highly. Consequently, the dress standards can be very high. This is rarely a problem however as newcomers are easily forgiven and, crucially, pretty much everyone will be willing to help out with lending garments and giving advice. We also have smaller LARPs like "parlour"-style VTM-LARPs that happen regularly throughout the entire year, or even stuff like office LARPs and small artsy blackbox events about philosophy and identity. The Medium is very diverse, but the people are always fantastic! That's one thing that all LARP-traditions seem to have in common.

What astounded my about LARPs when I was living in Europe was the seriousness with which it was treated. You would see LARPing guilds where everyone wore theme-constistent costumes and armor complete with matching livery and guild crests.

If you're able to travel to PA, At Cooper's Campsite they're holding the second year of Drachenfest US, it was 400 or so for the first year, and they moved to Coopers because they're expecting more people this year. It might not be a good first event admittedly, but it was a highlight of my LARP season last year. A week long festival larp, fighting, magic, thievery, politics, all things that you can get involved in. If you don't want to fight there's plenty of ways to contribute, everyone was super cool.

My group is an odd group we started out as an Airsoft group then we started adding new rules like "You must at least attempt to be tactical and treat the game as if you are in an actual combat zone." then it moved to "You must at least attempt to learn proper military jargon and make an attempt to use it." then we all started to just naturally fall into light Roleplaying games then after a year we were having full military Larp Weekends where we would simulate a random combat encounter my last one was a simulated Invasion of the US Homeland by Russians it was so much fun

Honestly, one of the better options for starting out is to look for various Event based LARPs. They tend to be far shorter, normally a few hours to a day, and are normally far more contained and often ones you can exit and return to over the course of it if things get weird for you. Mainly their ones where it's a few rooms at a convention. Some have a maintained internal universe, while others are for other things. One of the fun ones was Silverbacks...which was more of an odd, mainly conversation based LARP that would show up at several conventions where it was far more freeform and basically a running one that a few semi-local bars put together where it was set up as a pulp bar of the kind you'd find in the genre in some out of the way village with various trophies and people who would discuss their adventures and make plans in a consistent setting. The people running it would also go look for anyone in a pulp character cosplay and get them to go in while acting in character to some amusing situations with characters running into each other from wildly different universes...or even monsters coming into it...such as Indiana Jones, Cliff Secord, and Steve Rogers fighting Imhotep from the Mummy because some random people were in costumes for them. For a bit they'd also tried a second one that was a Lord of the Rings themed one with the Prancing Pony, but that didn't quite work as well because it was less generic which made it harder for the random side of things to happen and a lot of fantasy costumes were extremely out of place there. There had been a VtM one that most people tended to avoid due to it being unsettling and, well, not that fun from what I've heard from those who tried it. Then other people forced out the original group who ran it who had been more of what people described as a Goth HOA for a group that ended up getting them banned concerning being very inappropriate. I was heavily into a Star Wars one that had ups and downs, with everything set on Wayfinder Station that was out in the boonies of the galaxy with a lot of rebel and imperial things going on and well planned events...unfortunately that one kind of shifted to massively imbalanced in setup due to things like Jedi not being, normally, allowed and a progression system that could let you be one eventually but it was firmly Rebellion era...then a lot of cheap options for Imperials came out and there was an overrun on that side while several major people who had been playing rebels left the area and gutted the leadership of the faction (We had several military brats and several other major industries in the area that have transfers as standard...along with the local colleges) which left someone unable to actually unify people and a lot of anger at the larger numbers of Imperial players which meant that we had fewer events, and several of us no longer had people keeping us in rational and sane tactics while the news at the time was talking, a lot, about terrorist tactics... In the end, the Rebels brought that down early and they did independent one shots at events for a bit as they reworked the general rules more than they had planned, because they were going to end the continuing story anyway because they wanted to shift to a prequels era setup because of the media and movies of the time along with wanting to be more open to the large number of people wanting to show up as Jedi... But it's a lot easier to digest short term commitments to involvement rather than diving off a cliff into the longer ones

God, I remember one of my friends who has actual vampire fangs (I like to call him my "Super Omega Ultra Goth friend"), as in he had his teeth filed in a way to give himself fangs, who actively uses said teeth as a kink thing with his now spouse... called a VTM Larp "The cringiest thing I have ever seen". I was like "My dude. You moved to Louisiana to be close to New Orleans so you could, 'be closer to my own kind'. like... you are the cringe." I love that guy though tbh, he's so cool. Anyway, in my limited experience with LARPing (I have only LARPed in VTM/World of Darkness themed games), the biggest hurdle I have had is issues of consent. I have an actual phobia of being bitten due to a really fucked up thing that happened to me as a kid, so I never play a mortal in an "encounter"... but it never stops some rogue asshole who wants to diablerize me from trying to simulate (admittedly no one has ever tried to outright actually bite me, but even the simulation can be triggering if I am not given some kind of forewarning). Despite my seeming frailty, I keep getting invited to LARPs by friends for VTM and so much so, despite my having participated in a few (again limited but not like... that limited), I have never been asked to pay. The few paid events someone else paid for me. So, I... I guess... either they need people, or my friends are desperate for my participation. Anyway, despite any breaches of decorum, I think VtM LARPs are great and highly recommend if you don't have a bite phobia, but just make sure you know things can be very very edgy and that you try and do as much research as possible (which I imagine is true for all LARPs) about them and specifically what the rules are because again if you have specific issues like I do, making sure people are aware of it or that its not permitted is paramount to having a good time.

VtM larps are notorious for lack of regulations. My next video is going to try to break the myth that all larps have this problem by making it crystal clear what you should look out for when examining a larp near you.

@@DavvyChappy The last time I participated in one was I think 2014, I got jumped on (as in physically had someone jump on me in a low contact intrigue game) and was like "I am too old/tired for this shit." He apologized later to me but like the damage was done. The fact that only a friend of mine who I was with at the time it happened even said anything was kind of depressing too. Just overall, I am not diminishing LARPs I have had great experiences while at them but almost ALWAYS there is something that happens that derails it for me so I just opted out. Still have my costumes though and that's one of the things I miss the most.
@AzraelThanatos Жыл бұрын
@@DavvyChappy Yeah, far to many of the WoD based games kind of end up attracting the kind of mentally unwell that tend to pop up in the news as the crazy who thinks he's actually a vampire and gets involved in horrible crap...in a disturbing way, they're the LARP version of EVE players.You also have a scary mess of idiots who go with it must involve ERP because it has Vampires and the more uncomfortable crazies that are somewhere in between. Way to much like how the few SpyCraft LARP experiences tended to end up with situations that being able to do well probably means you're on a lot of government watch lists.

Been playing at Swordcraft larp for just over a year now, my advice for new players is to definitely ask the admins of your larp if there's any default factions to join as your first character. Don't make a character you want to be proud of if you're only just starting, save that for when you know the political atmosphere of the ingame world, or just generally get to know how it all works.

Cant wait for more videos on LARP its my favourite hobby only go to one in the UK called Empire been going for a few years and it has this nice balance on political intrigue and combat if you want to get into a fight you can if you don't you will never have to see the battle field and that is a very nice feature to help keep the game inclusive to people looking for different experiences. However if i do want to give one piece of advise it would be doubling down on Davvys statement on shoes deepening on how stick the larp you going on is most will be fine even regular boots will work but if you do find some get some more in character boots make sure they fit well the first one i ever got were just a bit to tight on the tows and after one weekend with them i was very reluctant to wear them again. went back to regular boots at the moment.
