"It's really hard to hate anyone/When you know what they've lived through" is pretty much the best creed that I've ever heard in a song. Thank you, Dawes.

Perhaps the most poignant ballad ever composed, a succinct chronicle of the human condition. Taylor Goldsmith is unmatched as today's preeminent American songwriter. This song brings me to tears each time I am blessed to experience it. Best wishes to you and Mandy in your union.

Since my original post, I have listened to this song at least four hundred times and still feel like this is the most profound musical expression ever recorded. The lyric "Punish him for the life he chose / But forgive the past that he did not" is a testament to the conundrum of poetic justice and poetic redemption in the same breath. And in spite of Taylor's genius, Lee's symphonic keys couple with Wylie's and Griffin's perfect and tender underpinnings to elevate this masterpiece into a much greater whole than any of their individual contributions could have ever envisioned. Kudos to Dawes!

I don't know Josh Ritter's pretty good, Tom Waits hasn't put out an album in a while he's off the charts, Dylan rough and rowdy ways had its moments but still overrated. I can't believe I'm saying this I'm saying this but the Lumineers have their moments it's all subjective I do really enjoy Dawes

I saw him play this live as a new song in Milwaukee. I love this band as much, if not more, than I have loved any band. This song is beautiful. I was so enthralled watching him play it live and solo that I never heard the lyrics. They are, once again, incredible. I do believe this will be my favorite album of 2018 as well. I am very excited for the new album and headlining tour.

I grew up with a player piano in our house. My mother refinished it when I was in my 30's. My sister ended up with it in her home and when our mom died in 2016, I dismantled the piano and have made several pieces of furniture from it which will survive through my children. This video flooded me with those thoughts. Thanks.

I understand that the lyrics are on screen, but they are a challenge to sing along to. So. Here you go. You're welcome [Verse 1] I will do your interview try to explain what I'm going through. Give you something to read into In a million different ways A sick version of telephone starts at the clip of the microphone A game we though we had all outgrown But still everybody plays [Chorus] Ignoring all of the remedies Believing all of the rumours With their endless database I wanna sit with my enemies and say “We should've done this sooner.” While I look them in the face Maybe that will crack the case [Verse 2] I got a friend who's been thinking 'bout Finally kicking her husband out His second life as a talent scout Finally got him caught While she was throwing out all his clothes She heard a voice from beyond the throes “Punish him for the life he chose but forgive the past that he did not.” [Chorus] It's really hard to hate anyone When you know what they've lived through And once they've given you a taste she said “This is for you to overcome But I will always love you” In her perfect state of grace Maybe that will crack the case [Verse 3] Now that we're through with formalities What is it you wanna ask of me? I'll answer open and honestly Whatever that means finding out We occupy somebody else opposing side On the banks of some great divide Two versions of the dream [Chorus] Countless revisions of history trying to tell us the future Between each commercial break I wanna call of the cavalry Declare no winners or losers And forgive our shared mistakes You can pick the time and place Maybe that will crack the case

Yeah man, no problem here's living in the future for you too! [Verse 1] I know all of my exits I am always planning my escape It's the most aggressive symphony Of this collective found pain And the more that you ignore it The more it makes you go insane Just look around It's the battle of the passwords It's the trumpets on the hill It's that constant paranoia It's that final fire drill And if you won't sing the anthem Then go find someone else who will Their crackin' down [Chorus] We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light It may not make it any better I'm just hopin' that it might I'm not talkin' 'bout forever How 'bout just gettin' through the night We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light [Verse 2] I'm always lookin' over shoulders Not knowing what I'm lookin' for Now that the feelin' that someones watching Isn't just a feelin' anymore Now that both sides of the isle Are as good as keepin' score We've crossed our line But there's a madness to the method There's a muckit for the fear It's that dance out on that razor's edge A wolf held by their ears It's the man behind the curtain It's the way of all frontiers Since the dawn of time [Chorus] x2 We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light It may not make it any better I'm just hopin' that it might I'm not talkin' 'bout forever How 'bout just gettin' through the night We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light
