The problem is that artists change as they grow in popularity and especially if record labels are involved and begin to push artists to do what's profitable. The music begins to take on a different, inauthentic change. There are bands and artists that have stayed true to their own sound as they grew in popularity. If somebody starts disliking a band for the sole reason that so many other people have discovered them, I question the authenticity of claiming true fanship. At that point it's about ego, being into obscure musicians that "nobody else has heard of". I've known stupid hipsters brag on how cool a band is and scoff at the very mention of that band two years later.
