As dawn breaks in the Amazon rainforest, every creature alive seems to be calling. Initially it's mostly insects and frogs, but birds and mammals join in pretty soon. It's a beautiful cacophony of chirps, tweets, warbles, trills, squeaks, clicks, whistles, wails and many other onomatopoeias I can't think of right now.
Nothing beats the rainforest at intense soundscapes. It seems like everything is trying to make itself heard over everyone else. That is in turn amplified by the claustrophobic understory spaces, and by topographical features such as treelines, riversides, hills etc. You have to experience it to believe it.
Find yourself too close to a cicada or katydid, and the sound levels become painfully loud. Move slowly and your sense of balance may be briefly impaired as calls go in and out of sync left and right, and weird resonances fill the forest floor. The rainforest soundscape sits at this interesting boundary between interestingly full-on and painfully intense. Not necessarily relaxing but definitely worth immersing yourself into.
