I found DOTD at a local dollar store in 2012. It was $5. It became a tradition in my middle school/highschool friend group to watch it every time we hung out. From 2012-2016, we probably watched it a thousand times. Bunch of crazy kids riffing and having fun. We drifted apart after highschool. But I still have that $5 DVD, and I still have the memories. Best $5 I ever spent.

The more I watch Dawn of the Dead, the more I respect Steven (Flyboy) and consider him an unsung hero. For starters, he stole a helicopter and got his girl, his friend, and a total stranger safely out of the city. He also did his best to save Peter and Fran at the airport despite having no combat training. He stayed awake for two days straight trying to find a safe place for everyone. He also found a way to get through the entire mall undetected and safely. He wanted to find a safe haven for Fran and his baby and hold on to it and marry her. When the bikers broke in, it was endangering this safe haven that his friend Roger died trying to secure. He also taught Fran how to operate the helicopter that ultimately saved her and Peter and his baby. RIP Steven. You're a hero.
@horrorfanandy46472 жыл бұрын
He was definitely heroic, they all look out for each other throughout the film. Steven’s problem was that he was envious of Roger and Peter’s skills and wanted to emulate that. He tries too hard to be the man and pays for it dearly.

I think Gaylen Ross's refusal to scream is this movie's one glaring weakness. Instead of appearing human and giving herself the ability to experience character development, she spends these scenes where she refuses to scream, just standing there looking completely inept for no reason. If she screamed, at least that ineptitude could be explained with fear (which any normal person would experience) but instead she just stands there and looks around, like she wandered onto the wrong set.

Fun fact: the infamous apartment complex headshot effect was originally meant for a different ending where Fran sticks her head in the rotating chopper blades and gets decapitated, but when that ending got dropped they pretty much just blew the fuck out of the prosthetic head for the swat raid scene instead.

Great review, guys👍 And, yes: That's indeed the great Jo Pilato ("Rhodes" from Day of the dead) in the beginning of the film at the dock. Sadly, this (and tons of other) scene(s) was deleted from the theatrical release. John Amplas is also seen as a Puerto Rican guy being shot on the roof early in the film, and later as the "machete"-zombie in the mall😃

Romero writes a good story while Savini comes up with creative kills. The soundtrack is great & memorable even Gorillaz used some of the scores including Day of The Dead. Yeah its not scary but its a fun time. Day & Night are dark, this one, get your popcorn ready and enjoy the ride.

I heard that the filmmakers didn't know how to turn off the shopping mall music, so they were forced to record while the music played, thereby adding this supercool, artistic (and unscripted) ambience to the film. Can any body coniform this? Great KZbin video, boys.
@evanparrafx5 жыл бұрын
Most of the mall music is from the DeWolfe Library, which are generic tracks that are leased and used for films, commercials, etc. The other music is by Goblin. I'm almost 100% sure all of the music was added later since filming while music was playing would be an editing nightmare! All of the ambient music would be cutting in and out and changing during every shot. That would be awful!

Think that stems from me watching this as a young kid when it was first released on home video in the UK, uncut (Betamax!) before Mary Whitehouse said otherwise. Used to be really scared of watching it, but used to really look forward to seeing it at the same time (we hired it out a few times). Also being made in the late 70’s setting gives it a certain feel / vibe and I always found Fran and Stephen a weirdo couple! Agree the Hare Krishna zombie is truly the stuff of nightmares.
