This was playing at the Crest Theater in Sacramento when it first came out, and I decided to go see it with a friend. We were both minors in 1979, so we got a ride from his grandfather. At the end of the film (midnight), we went out to get our ride, and his grandad wouldn't give me a ride back home. I lived on 5th ave, so it was a good several miles walk for me, and I walked along the SP railroad tracks all the way. In the dark. In the quiet. And even worse, it was a slightly foggy. I eventually got home, but I must have had at least 20 encounters with "zombies in the fog" on the way, and once I got to my destination, the house was empty: folks were out of town. My room was on the 2nd floor, and all night long I heard zombies coming up the stairs. I kept dozing, startling myself awake when I heard steps. I must have rechecked my door lock at lest five times. Anyway, I was freaked out for weeks. Scared the hell out of me. Nowf fast forward to today: I absolutely adore this movie. I doubt I've seen it fewer than 100 times. I even used to be a regular at the Dawn of the Dead midnight movie at Tower Theater. This movie holds first place in my favorite-horror-movies list, just ahead of Return of the Living Dead, which is even with Night of the Living Dead, followed by Reanimator.

What’s even cooler is that the original idea for the ending is that Peter and Fran would commit suicide. Last minute, it was changed I think for the better. The head they used for Fran’s unfilmed death was later used for the helicopter decapitation of a zombie

DAY is not nearly as good. The reason DAWN was a masterpiece was because : when they were up in that helicopter - YOU were right there with them. It did not feel like it was being filmed by a crew. It really felt like it was happening. The acting of the 4 leads - was flawless . The acting in DAY was hammy .

My number one favorite horror movie of all time. I remember seeing it in the local movie theater in downtown Cleveland when it first came out. I was maybe about 8 or 9. My older sister took me and my younger sister to see it. I'll never forget the audience reaction when the biker got his stomach ripped open and the zombies are pulling his guts out. This is actually authentic 4K here not an upscale. This particular version has not been released on video so this is an incredible find! The color timing is much closer to being correct. There's some excess green and magenta but that may have been part of Mike Gornick's plan but now the zombies look a sickly, ghastly grey and not cue chalk blue like other video releases. They actually look like corpses now and blood no longer looks like V8 juice anymore but blood. You know this is Romero's vision. I am very impressed with this uploader.

I was a return of the living dead fan for a very long time. However after finally diving into Romero’s zombie movies I finally see why they are considered the better half of 60-80’s zombie films. The dead will walk the earth when hell is full is so much more scarier than a chemical reanimating dead bodies. Also that shot of Steven when he exits the elevator as a Zombie has been sticking with me a few nights now. I just imagine the pain he is in and he has become one of them, it’s so scary. Glad he was put out quick. RIP Flyboy.

I remember seeing this and the Plethora of Dead movies..sneaking in and watching even before the PG rating system was created. This came out same year as StarWars and was almost forgotten as theaters would move these movies out and add an extra Theater for the StarWars lines. Lotts of good forgotten movies that year.

YESSS!!!! FINALLY!!! I've been searching on here for this version that I grew up with forever to no avail! I seriously had begun to doubt this version with the awesome musical soundtrack even existed. I believe I had been searching for it on here beginning way back in 2005, the year KZbin went live! Since then I searched for it on here about once every year and could never find this awesome version in the many uploads of this film available over the years. I specifically wanted to see it on here because I feel this is the definitive version and would like for others to enjoy the version I loved growing up. The many other uploads feature a version that seems foreign to me for their lack of the musical score that I'm so accustomed to hearing in this film. Without it, it feels very unexciting and dull. The music I'm referring to isn't the original soundtrack but music they added later I believe that is mostly electronic in nature (synthesizers) but I love it! It sets the creepy mood and is truly memorable. I wonder why they did away with this score in the version that is commonly uploaded here? I recall seeing it labeled as the "U.S. Cut" I'm from the USA, so how did I grow up with this version and not the U.S. Cut version. I believe this one is the International version (correct me if I'm wrong). Why wouldn't they add this awesome and atmospheric musical score to the U.S. cut? It's so much far less effective without it! Thanks for uploading this definitive version!

According to a video about the analysis of the zombies from Romero's Dead franchise, the timeline of the Dawn of the Dead was several weeks after the event in Night of the Living Dead(although the time gap between the release of the two masterpieces was longer than ten years), only a few weeks and the zombie apocalypse spreads around the United State so fast, making the society collapse. That 's fucking terrible.

I always wonder how long it would actually take for things to get that bad - seems like it would take at least a year, and in that time there stands to be a lot of room for a lot of the zombies to be taken care of. I suppose if the military went rogue there wouldn’t be much of a defense, but I find that unlikely - the fact that this is in the 70’s makes that sensibility much more likely however!

Romero said, if I'm remembering the commentary right, that Diary of the Dead takes place the same night or week of NOTLD? I wonder when Day, Land (partial rebuilt human outposts but the zombies evolving like Survival, which maybe means Survival and Land take place close to one another. Either way we are in a way witnessing the collapse of our once great society right now and it's rather horrifying. Zombies with blue face paint and party city occupation and cultural Halloween costume outfitted zombies, would be too much for me now lol 😆

I like how in this movie it shows the country / rural folks working together with the military, prevailing against the undead hordes instead of either completely ignoring them (fly-over country mindset) or having them totally antagonistic and hostile.

@@peacheswilliams4539 It IS clearly a little bit of a statement by Romero though. The urbanites are practically eating each other alive in a very short amount of time, whereas the rural citizens with strong community connections appear to (almost), be having a good time with the apocalypse.
@TitaniumTurbine
@TitaniumTurbine Жыл бұрын
@@kgpspyguy No, your own opinion wasn’t a statement by Romero. Shocker, right? In ‘78, right wingers weren’t made to be nearly as polarized, divisive, and fearful as they are now, back then. In fact, it’s even suggested that the rednecks are excited for this as they’re gun happy and/or blood thirsty. Stephen clearly says “I bet the rednecks are loving this!” as the helicopter flies over. The rednecks are then portrayed as being beer drinking, goofy looking, yeehaws - all the usual stereotypes. So yeah, that scene was definitely not in rural people’s favor either. Lmao I guess both of you political weirdos somehow forgot that Romero was very much a staple of Hollywood and didn’t just climb out of the backseat of Tucker Carlson’s car. Either way, not everything is political nor has some kind of double meaning. You people are getting ridiculous with these delusions and it really makes me wonder how your families cope with you all equating every little thing to your political obsession?
@ImperialCaleb
@ImperialCaleb Жыл бұрын
@@kgpspyguy I don't think Romero's intent was for that scene was to have a positive impression, of course you can feel any way you want, but I think his intent was more along the lines of "look at people not taking the apocalypse seriously" and "of COURSE the rural communities are having fun with something so miserable." Keep in mind the rural folk are not just shown being closer and more personable in this time of need, but also just enjoying something that is horrifying, I mean they're shooting human beings essentially and doing it for sport, not just necessity. Sort of the same mindset happens with the main characters, they become very comfortable in the mall and try to ignore that there's a literal apocalypse going on. It doesn't end well for them, and it probably didn't end well for the people in the country even though we don't see it.

@@kingofstars102 I don't think so. There's a website called Dawn of the Dead Collector's Blog where a film colorist has gone down the rabbit hole on this movie's home video releases. He has screenshots of the raw scan of the movie off the film negative and it doesn't look like the 4k version that got released. The colors on the 4k version have been tweaked big time to make it bluish grey, possibly to make it seem less cartoony. I think the way it looks on the Anchor Bay releases is more accurate to how it's supposed to be.

I like the realism of the emotional toll the is zombie apocalypse is taking on people. In the beginning of the movie, there is a mention of members of the crew at WGON-TV "going crazy" and you can see Rodger becoming emotionally unhinged during the operation of blocking the mall entrances with the trucks. Let's face it, if corpses began reanimating and started literally tearing people apart and devouring them it would take its toll on your sanity.
