Message for Dawn: I hope your nerves have settled now you have been to your first home and see the reaction to your help. Message for Tom: I think you were very insightful and that it was kind of you to speak to the lady when she was dealing with her 'fantasy self' stuff. Message for both of you: Well done for the hard work and your time away from your own busy schedules and family but most of all for your kind hearts.

Hi Rachael, off the bat I will tell you that you are WONDERFUL, I'm the middle child 9, and my Mom was the youngest of 9 !!! The daily hard work to keep EVERYONE feed, clothed, clean is, in and of itself an almost MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. I say almost because it's not almost, it's ALWAYS. Everytime (during this video) you easily stayed committed to your goal to have more time with you children, you are a very wise Mom.. ALL the best to you.

I am just starting to watch, and wanted to comment on Tom's initial instinct of "who are we to tell people what to do with their stuff!" Here is my response: Tom, you and Dawn truly are experts in what you have learned for yourselves, and I have never once seen this as telling people what to do, but rather making your experiences available for consideration, and that is not an act of loftiness, it is an act of love. I truly believe that you and Dawn retain your humility and your gratitude. The other thing (which I know may amaze you), is we WANT your input. Real experience has given you the chops to be able to suggest what can be an effective way to tackle clutter. No fancy degree necessary. Just a willing heart, a welcoming attitude and some elbow grease. There is a lot of love for the two of you out here in the real world. Thank you, so much, for what you both do! I know my life is the better for it, even if we have not met face to face.

I have found taking photos of my own spaces and looking at those photos helps me step outside of my own space to see the reality..and in turn gives me motivation and a plan forward. When it is super difficult, I take the photos somewhere away from home (perhaps out for coffee or a nice nature area) and look at them in a relaxed zone, sometimes even with a notebook to write down the next steps, so when I get back home - If I feel stuck - I can refer to my own dot points and firm words. Might help you?

Phone calls work, too. Catalogs will have a "toll-free" number for ordering and customer service. Same with unwanted magazines looking for new subscribers. My bigger peeve is someone who, for whatever reason, has to use our address for their junk mail. This was very odd, because I repeatedly sent the mail back to the sender with a note that she did not live here. (The last name is the same as ours.) And I say she because I am still the only "she" who has ever lived at this address, since my husband and I bought this place brand new about 10 years before. Most of her mail stopped within a few months, but after 5 or so years of receiving the last obstinate piece of mail, her sister called looking for her. How that was possible (she may have been listed in the phone book, too) I didn't check. I courteously told the sister that she did not live at this address. Anyway, the mail stopped.

My take away is “ fantasy self clutter”. Telling myself “ I may one day be that person but today I am not. And actually having those extra things cluttering up my mind is not helping me be that person, it’s preventing me from being that person!” Wow! So helpful!! I am idealistic. I buy all these things thinking about how I would use them and how they would make me a better mom, but because there is too much I am overwhelmed by it and actually it is holding me back from being that ideal mom.

@judyebell7548
@judyebell7548 3 жыл бұрын
I understand the sentimental paper items. Don’t go into it thinking you have to throw things away. Have a couple of boxes, and even large oversized envelopes handy, just for sorting. The really tough ones can go into 1 box save for last. Starting with easier items, sure it takes a minute to remanence and decide if you want it in a memory box or to trash it. My kids are over 45, my grands are 20- 11, and I had kept way to much for a memory box. Lol. Kind of silly. I also had items from a grand daughter that died 25 yrs ago at age 2, I have several things of hers that I will never let go of. Also other deceased family items. Good luck, I feel certain that you will be fine when you do get started on the project.

With sentimental items I have learned that just because I can't let go of something this year doesn't mean I won't be ready next year. Don't view the sentimental items with a view to declutter, I think of it as an annual visit and ask myself do I want to go back next year, if the answer is yes I keep it, if it's no I let it go. Lol for paper decluttering I just grit my teeth and grab a small stack at a time, and ice cream, lots of ice cream.

I believe you ought not throw out your dreams because of your season, but if they're truly a passion set them aside with hope to come back to them. I'm 52 years old now, but had a passion for painting with oils and horses from a child. After a long season of homeschooling 6 children, now I have 9 grandchildren, but am painting again (with my canvases and brushes I got for Christmas when I was 14!) And I ride with the first saddle I got when I was 12. My grandkids use my pony saddle. So, you might want to keep the treasures of your heart because so many memories come with them when you purpose to get back to them as your seasons change!❤

When I first started this journey I was totally a butterfly, 🦋 now I feel I’m more of a bee. 🐝 Is that a thing, for your styles to change? Thank you for all that you do! Our home feels so much nicer because of what I’ve learned from you! My 9yo daughter told me once that she wanted to take KZbin off of my phone bc I keep watching your videos and getting rid of stuff lol 😂 She’s even coming around now! She spent hours decluttering and organizing her room yesterday! I’m so thankful for you and all the hard work you put into teaching us all! We love you!

Love this series! Thank you Rachel for sharing. I am also a cricket and the neatly organized piles made me smile. I have some of those piles as well, waiting for the perfect way to deal with them. 🙂

Labels INSIDE the drawers! When you started talking about labeling the drawers, I was picturing the labels outside and crinkled up my nose at that thought…never considered putting them inside. Such a great but simple idea! Because I believe I’ve come up with fantastic solutions to problems, but a month (or 3) later I forgot what my plan was. Ok..maybe 6-8 months later. Loving these videos. What a great help you two are. Wish we were closer, but in all honesty, it would take a long time to get my problem area worked on. (Quilting supplies) I HATE moving things out that I’ve bought and haven’t used. I’ll keep watching and trying to apply to my own self! Thank you 😊

I’m finding that when it comes to paperwork, I don’t have a consistent Clutterbug style. For most stuff, I like it to be easy to find but out of sight (in binders and file folders in a closet or filing cabinet). But there are also things I want in plain sight so they are clear priorities for me. For those things I containerize them in one 5-inch desktop file box, labeled “Pending” or “Important” or the name of an ongoing project (with a checklist of steps). It has taken me awhile to find a way of having things out in the open but not in piles, and really restricted to only those things I need to tackle and finish up in the next month (or two).

One thing that I try to keep in mind is that if I have extras of something, I won't take care of the thing I have. For example, chapstick. If I have 3 different chapsticks, I'll just grab another one when I can't find the first one. Then I find myself with no chapstick, and I can't find any of them anywhere. So I buy more, and the process continues. A few months later, I find them melted in the crevices in the car or somewhere in the couch cushions. If I only have ONE chapstick, then I know where it is. I know that I'm not going to want to look for it later, so I'll put it somewhere that I will remember. The same is true for pens, notebooks, water bottles, etc. Really, anything that I can only use ONE at a time, I only keep ONE at a time. (There are a few exceptions, like necessities that I really need and don't want to risk running out of. I'll keep one of those things as extra and ONLY use it when I've run out of the first one.)

As a mom of two small kids, one with special needs, I have been so inspired and encouraged by you, knowing that as a mom of four you were able to declutter so much and keep your house tidy! You have taught me and that I too can do it as a busy mom! Question, I am in the middle of decluttering my kids' toys... what do you do with action figures? My kids have a ton of them...

Dawn, when your visit to Rachael ended I felt sad. I love your channel and have followed and learned so much from you. Tom was so intuitive about Rachel’s discarding of notebooks and books about herbal gardening. I didn’t tune in to it immediately but I have come to think that her discard of these books because they were not useful in meeting present family and personal goals with 8 children I think it was throwing away future attainable dreams. Would it have harmed her present goals to have a reminder of an interest that she can work toward? It took me 20 years to get my college degree and become an RN. Five children and lots of life occurred before I was ready, but the yearning was there. You do a great job and my home (and me) have been transformed over 4 months with your great teaching. 53 years of marriage and still lots to learn.

You both do a great job with others in person as well as on your channel. I liked that you were friendly and supportive and great team work when Tom was asking her questions about how she felt about getting rid of things. Best part is when you leave the trash and donations go with you so there is no second guessing or turning back on the donated items🥰

Putting the "time will tell" bin in a drawer also allows a brief moment of reflection about whether it's really worth keeping. As opposed to just tidying stuff into it on the counter.

I can relate to Rachel. I end up never using planners and journals. I also find myself with notes in several notebooks. I want to have everything out of sight, nice and neat, but instead I have piles waiting to be attended to. I understand why now that I know I'm a cricket organizer. I know I need to have less stuff in order to be successful at organizing and maintaining. I also understand my husband better now. He's a butterfly. I have to say, that explains so much. A procrastinating cricket and a butterfly who wants to keep everything and all of it out where he can see it. Oh my. What a mess! I am getting rid of most of my stuff. I'm hoping he'll catch the declutter bug too, but if not, at least we'll have less of a mess to deal with.
