Minus the missed haste thing, I really enjoy the game. I might just try my hand at building a Mairsil myself because trying to link together wacky abilities to repeatably use just looks much more fun than i did when I was focused on wizard tribal. Great Job Harry!

There were several answers to Mairsil, but they came a bit late. Stuff happens. That was obviously Mairsil with a singular card strong start, with no answers immediately hitting. Lots of people in my group complain about Zacama's abilities(yes, abilities on a 9 drop) until several started running Pithing Needle(and various other answers) that they've discovered works on many commanders. Run several generic answers in every single deck, and be ok having a rare dead draw as opposed to the inability to interact. Sorry to Harry for all the hate dumped on your fun deck.

Basically every match I've faced against a Marsil deck has been a miserable experience. Either you dogpile the Marsil player and they sit out through 3/4s of the game being miserable and bored, or everyone else gets to be miserable and bored as the Marsil deck either gets a great start, like here, or is left alone long enough and locks down the ability for others to play the game. I feel like it should have been an attack or combat damage trigger, so decks that run removal over counters have a way of dealing with it if the Marsil deck gets a nutty draw like Riptide into immediate NDisk.

In a vacuum, the Mairsil deck probably isn't that bad, but I think this table was much too casual for his deck. I understand if its the only deck he had on him at the time, but if there are softer decks he owns, Harry should have chosen another one. I don't think anyone at the table could effectively interact with Mairsil between the disk and the land that allowed him to be bounced. With Anger, it just locked everyone out of the game (even though Anger was exiled for a few turns and Mairsil was still being used as if he had haste). These aren't really 'fun' cards to the table, but possibly to the player. Dodging two removal spells and locking people out of the game between phasing, tree, land and haste (legit or otherwise) is not exactly fun. TLDR; Spicy commanders are fine, but with other spicy commanders at the table.
@GuildMcCommunist
@GuildMcCommunist 6 жыл бұрын
(Harry) It wasn't the only deck I had on me at the time but I don't consider Mairsil to be a high power level deck personally. For the sake of the camera, most of my other decks are either A) too slow and grindy to fit the format of an edited 10 minute game or win too fast. You'll probably never see my favorite decks on camera for those reasons. It's just a playstyle thing and I can completely understand why some people aren't big fans of it.

Love me some Mairsil. Enough to have written a primer on how to play him. Super stoked to see him this episode and even more stoked that he won so easily! That being said, even a "fun" build of Mairsil can be leagues ahead of most "friendly" edh games. He's super difficult to interact with and practically oppressive once you cage disk on to him. I loved watching him stomp, but I can see how some folks wouldn't be fans. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing it in a slightly more competitive (i.e. anything with blue) matchup next time.
@GuildMcCommunist
@GuildMcCommunist 6 жыл бұрын
(Harry) I have thought of building Mairsil in a ton of ways, he's so versatile and being able to keep any effect in your command zone makes him an amazing buildaround. I've thought of doing Mercenary tribal, Salvaging Station, Sundial of the Infinite, and spellslinger with him too.
@BangThatGong

Thought it was boring as hell to watch this dude play Marisil. No one really got anything done at all because of the disk. Pretty lame way to win
@sloanmurray6799
@sloanmurray6799 6 жыл бұрын
@ BeckerAndCall: Yeah that versatility is one of my favorite things about him. There are so many different ways to build him! For a while I had a fairly large sideboard for him and like ten or fifteen flex slots in the deck where I'd just take out certain ones and swap them out for weird abilities to see how they played. Once my playgroup got a little more consistently competitive I settled on where I am now with it, but I still love having the option to bring it to casual game nights at the LGS.
@sloanmurray6799

@Ben: Eh, to each their own. I always love seeing other builds of Mairsil to see how they win. Disk is an easy lockdown so it's not usually the first card I want to cage, but when you've got it in the opening hand you might as well. As soon as I saw the opening hands I knew it would wind up going that route.

Last time I played against a Mairsil deck was when I was playing monoblue control, and stifled the ability he needed to resolve to win (tried to disk on my turn after I cast omniscience). He got cheeky and did the whole "in response, untap and activate it again...?" until I told him to read Mairsil again.

This folks is the reason why my playgroup and I decided to not run any (soft)locks in our decks... I play Mairsil myself and LOVE him, but a caged Disc combined with a bounce/flicker/exile ability is just obnoxious to play against... can imagine Harry grinning all the time (as I did in several ocasions) but it is obnoxious :-D that Tree of Perdition does some nasty work by the way! Always love it! Sadly, Hallar again suffers the problem of being too dependent on him (or her?) sticking around... it seems like a blast too play when functioning properly, but it appears to never be the case :-( Keep it up!

"As soon as Harry was able to exile the disk" Literally the very first Mairsil cast. So, game was decided because it was actually impossible to stop Mairsil. He didn't even have much interaction.
