The great thing about the cold weather is we can put the food outside to keep it frozen. Definitely need to have extra lamp oil. One thing I know is that you will all be fine! You are prepared! Blessings!

I always made a big pot of homemade veg beef soup with cornbread when we were expecting a storm. We could reheat on the woodstove. Good food, heat and safe at home.

Lived in Amarillo, tx out 14 miles e. On county rd. No electricity for 6 day. Snowed 13 in. Took them 3 days to get to us. Had been prepared for it. Firewood, camp stove. Camp water bottles for hot water quick showers. Snow melted for toliet, toilets,, lanters. Mattress on floor. Doors all closed off but where we were. Food out of freezer onto trampoline in thick bags. Didn't think back then about animals getting frozen food. Medical supplies. Try to stay calm and to chill out lol. Stay warm

I bought several solar lights at Dollar Tree, drilled holes in a board and just use the upper half of the solar light and put in holes. Everyday I put it in the sun and have a great light source. No fire danger. You could use some of your cedar post cut down and put the solar light in the top. Attach several to a board and make it more decorative! I plan on making several for every room in the house!

I was out about half the day with a chainsaw for the trees that had fell on the road and dragging them off so the power company trucks could get down the road to restore the electric service. Luckily we were out for only about 18 hours. Hope you get service restored soon.

The kids don't even realize how much the skills they've learned will help them as adults. We have property in VA. We were out of power for a week. Our neighbors were city people. I didn't realize how much they learned from us as we pulled out stuff to distribute in the neighborhood. I made a list of storm supplies and prep. I come from farm country and it's second nature to just shift gears to be ready. That legacy had a huge impact on the neighborhood and they're teaching others. Who knew? ❤️

Any open flame auxiliary heat source needs to have fresh air vented in. Every once in awhile open a door and vent out the methane. May GOD bless your journey brother.

I've tried fermenting celery and I didn't like the outcome either. Carrots though, they are my favorite. I'm actually trying store bought fermented veggies. I'm excited for the cauliflower. This storm was suppose to bring up to 10 inches and we only got 2. Looks like it hit you guys instead. That is a whole lot of shoes!

I think after the Derecho in Iowa a few years back, we went without power a couple of days. Out in Eastern Iowa they went alot longer. We had alot of peanut butter sandwiches, canned meat and canned pasta (unheated of course) and chips. Not the healthiest, but we survived. Lived in the city in a townhouse so we'd run to the next town over to get a large cup of coffee for morning. Hope your power kicks back on soon! Is a nice diversion to eat in the dark, talk and avoid all the electrical techy things once in awhile.

Your family did well managing things during the power outage. I hope your power is restored soon. We had a snow and ice storm last Monday here in Maine. Lost power for most of Monday and Tuesday. I had just made a huge batch of homemade chicken vegetable soup the day before and didn't want it to spoil, so I put it in a cooler and packed snow all around it, along with some other perishables from the fridge. That worked amazingly well. I kept the freezer closed and was amazed to find everything still frozen when the power finally came back on almost two days later! But I must say, I did a LOT of thinking during that time about what life would be like and how I would manage if the grid goes down long term. I rely way too much on electricity.

I would have helped Momma Pepper safeguard the ice cream too. One of my downfalls, LOL. Boiling the eggs will help them stay longer. And egg salad sandwiches are a great side dish for a steaming bowl of soup. The soup can be made of those fridge items so that they don't go bad. And it's yummy & fills the tummy.

We have lanterns that we bought from the local Amish store in our area that run off of DeWalt drill batteries. This is what we use daily as we are off the power grid. We also have a lot of oil lanterns. I always prefer the oil lanterns in the evening. So relaxing.

Board games for kids or a deck of cards. Or a puzzle to keep them busy. I keep 5 gallon jugs like the ones for a water fountain. WalMart also sells a hand pump to fit the top of the water jugs. I would keep 4-5.

Put a large pot of soup on top of wood stove. Pot of water on wood stove increases the heat. Wood stoves dry out the air in a home. Soup and sandwich is a good meal.

Wait, y’all got a power outage? It’s almost April and my house hasn’t had the 1st one of the year yet. It snowed Sunday, like barely, power didn’t even blink. The power went out while at school, but I was told that at my house our power stayed on. We didn’t get to leave early, probably later in fact.

on gas stoves, if you have gas pilots, not electric ignitors then they dont care about power. And once the flame is on shouldnt it stay on if power drops, the burns for sure, not sure about all ovens maybe some will shut off without power. Have oil in your lamps, wood in the pile, propane in your tank, fuel in your generator and charge in your batteries. Or if you want to simplify things, run more things on things that you can store, and maybe make yourself. Electricity is the ultimate "just in time delivery" commodity . Every heard of a fireplace that makes electricity? they are a thing, might even be able to make one for yourself.
