If you having "rigidly assembled" problems with the first Joint at 1:20 look to see if the component has an anchor icon on it. Right click on the component and select "unground from parent" to get rid of the anchor and allow the component move.

if anyone is stuck on the snapping the joint section around 1:20, make sure you click the eyeball (unhide) the origin on the most top level one, not the components one. As in you'll have 2 origins, the first and highest level is above the "components1:1" and the 2nd one is located inside the "componets1:1". If you snap it to the 1st origin you won't need to "Select Unground from Parent" as the other comment said, at least for me.

Took me a while this lesson! But I'm finally done and very proud of my progress! The reason it took a bit longer than anticipated was because my phone is the S24 Ultra and I could not for the life of me find a STEP file for it as it was only released last week! The ones I did find were paid for models. So before I could even do the phone case I set myself the challenge of using what I had learned in the first 8 lessons and model my phone myself! I started with finding bottom, side and rear reference images and worked from there! Took me about 10 hours to get it all perfect. Mainly due to having a shit set of calipers for measuring less than 1mm gaps! I have ordered a pair of digital ones now! So after I got my working phone model I set about following the lesson but had to improvise some steps due to the phone not being the same all the way round. The sides are curved but the tip and bottom flat so I couldn't just Sweep the outside so easily. I managed it in the end! Parametric modelling is tricky! But I'm enjoying the process! Thanks for making it a fun journey and being so clearly spoken.

For those who dont know at 4:28, you have to select the top edge, and if it is not one piece you have to select all of them using the shift key. For example, for the iPhone 16 pro max, it had 8 edges on the top side, so i selected all of the 8 edges using the shift key and clicked okay

whoever has problems at 7:30, you have to return to 6:55 and instead of projecting edges, select face of a splot. By doing so, after extrude operation there will be 1 face at the splot's side and not 2, which will be easy to offset keeping the symmetry and applying chamfer after.

@Salmondorf
@Salmondorf 2 ай бұрын
@@iMakos101 I got it to work by projecting the lines of the charge port, as in the video, but then creating an offset of that projection of -2mm *before* doing the extrude. Worked quite well without any hassle, just make sure to select both the area between the projection and offset you created, and the inner area of the projection, when doing the extrude. Though I had trouble applying the chamfer afterwards. I think it's having trouble wrapping around to the curved surface below, similar to the issue with the doorstop on Lesson #8. Not sure what the fix is for this.
@tedstricer1291
@tedstricer1291 Ай бұрын
@@Salmondorf just use the "flip" option, it changes which side chamfer chamfers first, apparently it's important for fusion becouse of geometry. also note it will let you chamfer less and more then the fillet line, but not the exact distance to fillet line

So I made a phone case after the first tutorial, purely on math, knowing the phones dimensions from its spec sheet and using calipers to figure everything else out but this lesson definitely taught me some more tricks to expedite the process. That said it's kind of important to note that unless you do the Pixel Kevin did your process will likely be different so this lesson challenges you to use what you've already learned to get similar results. I picked an iPhone 16 Pro Max since I could easily give that away to someone and some procedures he did early on I didn't have to do (e.g. filling in the gaps) and others I couldn't do because of the form factor of the phone. I went back and actually did the exact Pixel Kevin did just to follow that process as well, sadly I don't have a Pixel so I'll never print it lol. The point of this comment is to just advise others that this lesson has 2 paths: Path 1- you can do exactly what Kevin does using the same model or Path 2 - Treat the lesson as a guide to work on your own case of your choice. Or you can just do both like I did lol. Either way good lesson!

I’ve really been enjoying the series, but, as another commenter stated, this one seems to assume a bit too much F360 knowledge on my part. It’s not always clear WHY I’m doing something. For example, the “Joint” action. Perhaps you have other videos that go into depth on certain functions. I know it’s probably a matter of practice, but when I go back and try to recreate the steps on my own, I often have trouble remembering some of these finer points. I’m hanging in there though!

Hi there. Thanks for the feedback! It's important to keep in mind this series is *sequential*. I'm spending hours behind the scenes planning out the lessons. Concepts will build upon one another and there are many times that a concept is not covered in depth in a given video, as it will be later. Afterall, F360 is very complex and even after the 30 days you will not be an expert - yet :)

If you are having trouble jointing the back to the origin to make it lay flat and are getting a "Components are rigidly assembled" warning, here is the solution. After creating Components from Bodies, right-click on the component and pick "Select Unground from Parent" from the pop up menu. You should then be able to continue with the joint as in the video.

3:24 guys if you have problem with offset try to do the offset 2 times like first time try how many pieces u select give 0.25 and try another offset agin only select the remaining give that 0.25 and u will have gab between two offsent that is when you do the 3 point arc for that gab and after that just do the coincident thing from that 3 point arc to mid point it will connect both offsent together

Many thanks for these tutorials, Kevin! Super helpful resource. Just curious - is the reason you're doing an update to this beginners series due to the Fusion 360 software changing, or is it more to do with better practices and more efficient solutions you've discovered over the years? Trying to decide whether to wait for the upcoming videos in this series or use the old series. Thank you!

Some of both! The UI changes have been a growing pain point per the old series. Since 2019, a lot of things have changed (new features, some new workflows, etc) so I am reworking each lesson from scratch to make sure it accounts for any of those changes. That is why reworking everything is such a huge undertaking. It takes me about 8 working hours to prep, script, record, and edit each lesson. ps. For anyone else having this issue at 4:00 to 4:10, and 3:25: 4:00 - 4:10: I was having an issue creating the measurement constraint from the edge of the offset. It kept creating a measurement constraint to the origin point of the inner arc curve instead of the edge of the offset curve. I was able to fix this by using the Point tool to create a midpoint on the offset curve and then project that point. That allowed me to use it as a reference point to create the measurement constraint such that it measured 2mm from the outer offset arc to the outer edge of the phone case. 3:25 - 3:40: It may have been because the edge of my particular phone model is not an exact half circle. Another issue related to this partial arc was creating the offset arc itself at 3:25, as the offset arc ended too soon. I was able to solve that by extending the offset arc using the 3-point curve tool to complete the curve to the actual edge of the phone while maintaining the .25mm offset constraint. Doing this may make the overhang of the top of the case less protruded when you sweep, and therefore you won't be able to follow the instructions at 5:15 that instruct you to use the "Offset Faces" tool as there isn't enough material to offset. ("I think").

I've had a lot of trouble creating the charging ports in previous attempts. I understood the theory very well, (i did this series before) but i encountered problems that were more akin to bugs. I've used the Pixel 3 step file. Sometimes sketch offsets would fail during sketching. Other times chamfers would refuse to work or the offset face command would fail. My solution was to stop referencing geometry on the step file and instead draw my own charging ports with the slot sketch commands. I think that the error was in the "project/intersect" step. The projected geometry does not play well with Autodesk fusion for some reason. It could be that the geometry looks like simple lines and arcs, but it's actually a series of complex shapes line splines which Fusion does not like to work with. I know that learning to project geometry is the whole point, but in my case the solution was to draw my own sketch features. No more problems offseting, extruding or cutting or applying offset face or chamfers.

But because of that steeper curve I think you learn a bit quicker, or it "goes in" better, as you have to figure out some things yourself. One thing I did notice, was when doing the text on the back, that some of it would basically end up as an island, like in the middle of a "o" etc, suppose that's learning too mind!

Then right clic on this new component then Rigid Group. after that i was able to orient properly the phone with the hinge tool. Also i was having trouble targeting my origin point, this is because the phone was over it, easy fix is to hide it then select the point ... hope that helps

Hey, ever since doing the create components from bodies part, it's now messed up my add components option. Any new project I try to open or work on, if I click on New Component button as usual, name it, hit ok, it's now making some new anchored component with a different looking icon than usual (it looks like 3 boxes, 2 stacked on each other. Any new sketches I make don't go in the right places, it's not making bodies in the right places. I've close out of everything and reloaded. I even tried to go back in earlier videos to follow the steps and it's all sorts of messed up when trying to do the first step of adding a component. This weird anchored component shows up instead of the normal non anchored single box icon. The same applies for any old projects I reopen. I've reset my preferences back to defaults and rebooted, no luck.

Having MAJOR trouble following this one. I downloaded the STEP for my phone. turned on design history. Right-clicked on Body and selected "Create Components from Bodies". The next step is to add a joint and select the origin. But when I do that, the origin point is NOT in the center of the back of the phone, it is in a corner and nothing orients as described in the video. I have tried a number of things believing I just selected a wrong item to begin that section, but NOTHING I have done seems to work. What am I doing wrong? There seems to be 3 bodies in the STEP file: Unstiched (5), Body1, and Body7 (3). Body1 has the solid icon next to it so that is the one I right-clicked to create components from bodies. I also tried to merge all into a single item, but found now way to do that. I have downloaded 3 different STEP models for my phone trying to find one that will work with no luck. Every one behaves the same, with the origin planes showing in the corner, not where I tried to orient it with the Joint tool used in the video. I'm stumped. How do I get there???
@Brekkeso
@Brekkeso 9 ай бұрын
I seemed to have gotten past this part by creating components from bodies using the complete set, then selecting all components in the list, right-clicking one one of the selected, and choosing "Rigid group". That locked everything so when I selected the back center point and the origin, everything stayed together. I can continue the rest of the video now. That took me several hours to work out on my own. Googling and the help box in Fusion just didn't give any useful information. Some of the comments here helped.... The second component to select in that process is the center point of the origin no matter where the origin ends up being.

Thanks for the lessons Kevin, these are a great resource! I struggled on this lesson because I chose to use my samsung s10+ as the model which does not have a uniform edge profile. I can make a profile for the top, bottom and side edges, and can sweep them to cover the straight section each edge, but fusion will not let me include the corners in the sweep which will bridge between the different profiles. I used extrude to force a messy connection over the corners but it made the following steps of your lesson impossible. I am wondering what the better solution for sweeping corners to different profiles is? Either way, I'm going to take the time to redo the lesson using the .STP file you used to make it to the end and get the most out of it. Cheers

To anyone doing it in 2025, you cant use joint trick to rotate the model anymore but you can it very easily. You can use the view cube to snap rotate it to be facing you with screen from top view and just right mouse button on the view cube and chose "set current view as" and click "top". You can use it at any stage of working with the model as long as it's just one model. REMEMBER that for more components it will change the default view of all models.

I just did this one and I'd give myself an A-. I got it done but had some struggles, some of which I resolved and 2 that I didn't. For the ones I resolved and some of the comments echo this, you may need to rewind and watch what Kevin is doing because there are little steps in between what he says where things happen. Doing that in a few spots got me past the errors. When extruding the charge port, make sure you are selecting one of the 2 curved inner walls. I was picking a flat because that's what it looked like at first in the video and it goes to 9.45mm and into the phone itself. Another tip for folks is use the exact phone case file Kevin started with for now. Doesn't matter if you want a different one for your phone, do the one he used so you can follow exactly. It seems like maybe some of the errors could be because the models to start from have issues? I dunno though. As far as things I couldn't resolve: I tried to put in the other port on the bottom next to the charger but it doesn't seem to be a single piece and was really hard to get it to select and project correctly. Also as far as adding a logo, I tried Emboss but it wouldn't select a Sketch feature so I couldn't complete it. Anyway, not too bad

this is happening because most of us have worked around the initial thickness during the sketch phase where we have to fully constraint the offset. Solution: when we project the arc it is not exactly midpoint for some phones (mentioned in some previous comment) hence fusion take the radius as dimension. . Also selecting the corner sweeps along with the 4 faces worked for me for -1mm offset.

Something to be vary of with grabcad is to not trust the quality of the models and double-check _all_ relevant dimensions, every time, as they can be extremely inaccurate to the real object. Bit me in the ass when I assumed the most popular and liked model would be the one to go for but it was absolutely unusable, the only dimension that where remotely correct were overall width and length, everything else was complete guesswork. The Sweep command (and some other features) will try to detect a sketch profile. If you only have one, it will automatically select it for you which is why it was selected already.
