I agree with your comments that this should be within reach of most people. I have only done the JMT section (in Aug/Sept 2016 & 2017) but I did it to celebrate my 67th & 68th birthdays, and it was incredible scenery. I had to stop the 1st time because my R knee was not working well, but I went back and finished the last bit with Mt. Whitney the next year. Also - besides being older, I was between 80 - 100 lbs overweight, with an arthritic knee + pack wt of 40 to 55 lbs. After I finished I was diagnosed with a narrowed aortic heart valve -- which has kept me from hiking the last 2 years. Now that it has been replaced (non-surgical procedure) I need to get my knee in shape before I can hit the trails again. So -- whoever is saying that they can't do this because of age, or weight -- think again. It does take tenacity and being self-sufficient and reliant -- but if you go your own pace - you are capable of doing it -- and it is ok to do it in sections - due to work or life commitments too.

Love the beautiful scenery and wildlife and flora and fauna you film. It's just beautiful. Thanks for the encouraging words too. If i had only known earlier in life that this was even out there - I know i would have done it when i was young. I have been so inspired by so many of you that are hiking the PCT, AT, CDT - etc... so I have been working out to start section hiking. Thanks for all the encouragement about age shouldn't be related to walking. So true. I have always loved walking. I started 2 section hikes last winter and loved it. Will do it again soon. P.S. Take care of that awful blistered sore! Yikes!

Great hike, but I am definitely too old for what you are doing. Even when I was younger and hiked quite often, I could manage about 17 to 18 miles a day, but that was only day hiking. Then I needed a week to recover. LOL. And the only thing I had in my backpack, was maybe one footlong sandwich a few cans of soda, and a small 35mm camera. I don't know how you carry all that weight, and keep going day after day. But I'm happy I can watch your adventure on KZbin. I hope your foot heals fast.

Most of us have a list of "It could have been worse." It's good to hear that you have the same physical challenges as some of us who lament that "I could never do that." I'm 66, have injured my knees, ankles, etc. in various accidents, mostly involving bicycles and cars, but they heal, slowly, these days. Last year I had a pretty bad bike accident, but have done a number of dayhikes, a short overnighter, and have climbed Mt. Washington ln NH twice. I'll be heading out to do a 300 mile section hike of the AT in the fall. Most people use "can't" when they really mean "won't." Many of the toughest people I know appear, on the outside, weak. Glad that you addressed your speech, and how it makes you seem younger. You accept yourself and know your limitations, yet push the boundaries. You don't give up, but you do have common sense. Thanks again for another wonderful video. ☺

Great clip. Your words about anyone hiking are an inspiration. I’m in my mid-60’s, have recently returned to backpacking, looking at having both hips replaced this year and I have been wondering if I can really do LH (“Long Haul”) Backpacking. My son, 2016 AT Thru, has been trying to convince me to do Springer to Roanoke VA, and I’ve been thinking that it would be too much. But your words have given me something to think about. Thank you for that. Try some mole-skin and neospirin on that blister during the day. Let is air and dry out at night when you sleep. Watch for any infection. Be well. Walk Safe...Walk True......Slow Dawg.

Tape, I try to hike with some. Tape an oval for the bottom of the pad sometimes, but air dry them at night. Thanks for the Manzanita tip, I hate poison oak. I won’t be around when u hike the PCT at 80+ years, but I wish you well. But more people could do the hike then they think they could. I did a similar thing with the ligaments in my foot. Pulled my foot out of the deep mud and ripped them as I was falling.
@mylovedwildanimals85205 жыл бұрын
Epic task, Katie, very dangerous too, even more when you are woman and are alone out there in that wilderness. This is not something for me, I'd be to afraid to be totally alone in that vast environment, with wild animals surely around. I'd be petrified of sleeping out there in the middle of nowhere, knowing so many creepy stories.....either you are too brave to do that, or too reckless. Rest, so your feet can recover, they are your main tools to make that hiking, having that awful blister is no good, you could get an infection. Take care of yourself and be safe
@rthoreson50185 жыл бұрын
Oh no I was like I hope she doesn’t peel the skin off and then you did. I always do better leaving the skin on but it was mostly loose so I understand. It probably would have just slipped around when walking. Good luck. Ouchy
@KateCloud5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I leave the skin on all my blisters even if they pop...better protection from infection. But- if they get dirt in them after popping or the skin comes loose I cave and take it off then just baby it.
@djg59505 жыл бұрын
That was a pretty good chunk of skin you cut off that wound. It will heal if it stays clean and doesn't get infected but you'll have a gouge in your foot for a long time. Was that all from cracked and dried skin ? I'm wondering what caused it. Gnarly injury Kate.

And may the aching your heart soul and mind feel be replaced with a peace and joy as through them and those out there sharing their adventures you can have a taste of the trail.... Sooner or later we ALL must go reach the end of the trail called life. Some have had a better journey than some. Who can say why????. But the next trail is your choice. Be of good cheer, have faith like never before. Believe in mercy and grace. There is no trail that you cannot champion. Stay focused on the goal. Long trails are about chopping it up into small doable goals. I look forward to meeting you on the next trail and I'd b grateful if you'd share a campsite with me 😊☺️ Tracy

The foot needs some wax or med-tape w/gauze. The wax is what doctors pack a dry socket with. Remember those root canals people get? It's just an idea to consider. "Who would have thought" That the bee's you ran across on trail could have helped with free wax for your foot.

Stone Cold Maybe if she gooped it up with a lot of Neosporin, and then taped it up, it would help. But she should still stay off of it for at least a few days, if not a week to let it get healed up.

To celebrate your hundredth day on the trail, Walt Whitman said . . . I hear the echoes reverberate through the grandest scenery in the world, I cross the Laramie plains, I note the rocks in grotesque shapes, the buttes, I see the plentiful larkspur and wild onions, the barren, colorless, sage-deserts, I see in glimpses afar or towering immediately above me the great mountains, I see the Wind river and the Wahsatch mountains, I see the Monument mountain and the Eagle's Nest, I pass the Promontory, I ascend the Nevadas, I scan the noble Elk mountain and wind around its base, I see the Humboldt range, I thread the valley and cross the river, I see the clear waters of lake Tahoe, I see forests of majestic pines, Or crossing the great desert, the alkaline plains, I behold enchanting mirages of waters and meadows,

In my eyes you are the bravest woman on Earth hiking alone that beautiful, dangerous PCT. I really mean that. I cannot even walk in a city park without being paranoid. I am too afraid of forests because of Missing 411 and other things people have told happen in wilderness. I am terrified of mountain lions. I had frozen to death watching a lion stalking me I never ever could sleep in a tent by myself in a mountain or forest like you do, Katie. I'd be terrified of the darkness, wildlife, serial killers, and eerie stuff. I love Nature, hiking BUT with other person next to me all the time. You are an inspiration for me, a breeze of pure air, your free spirit is really amazing.

When you get time, check out Ron Salley Enterprises, their skin products. I first listened to an interview with him when Capt.Joyce Riley, RN (RIP) was alive. I have bought and used 3 of his products so far and they are amazing. I have his HEALON drops, not cheap but that product is amazing. It helps heal skin fast. The other thing that would be so soothing is making a calcium bentonite clay poultice. I know you cant do that where you are, however. Here is the link for the Healon. It comes in a very small bottle, very light and dispenses by the droplet. www.mnwp.org/RSalley/index.html This is an article written about another one of his products called, SUGARFOOT. I have not bought it but it is for people that suffer with cracked skin on their feet. www.mnwelldir.org/docs/reviews/ron_salley.htm
