I love this my youngest son’s middle name is David and he has been through so much. Being born at 23 weeks, weighing only 12.6 oz. He is a fighter and such a beautiful blessing. I thank you God 🙌🏽

I love the story of David & Goliath but sometimes we miss the little gems in this story. David had already been anointed as king yet we find him still working for his father with the sheep. His dad tells him to take provisions -including smelly cheese on hot days to his brothers in battle. David hefts his load upon his shoulders, smelly cheese and all and goes to meet his brothers who are in the middle of a battle they can not win. David was willing to do the "lesser" job. He was willing to do the "grunt" work while his brothers got promoted in the kings service. We all want to slay the giants but are we willing to carry the smelly cheese first? Are we willing to do the messy grunt work or are we just in the battle to get a shining award? I want to be more like the cheese bearer! Be willing to be small and others tall! I don't need a throne or crown just give me the heart of a king.

"Obedience is better than sacrifice" is a Scripture I heard a lot growing up. When I learned the full context it made even more sense to me as an adult. Now I can teach it to my son and anyone else who is willing to learn.

Learning that God's heart was grieved after making Saul king was eye opening and heart softening for me. I easily see God's grief when reading Genesis 6 before the flood, but seeing it here was new. Thank you for the clarity of distinguishing between 'regret' and grief'. The parenting perspective helped a lot too!

Man looks on the outward appearance but God looks on the heart. It can be fearful sometimes knowing that God knows the thoughts and intents of my heart..because it is desperately wicked Jer 17:9 but it is also comforting. I am thankful that the condition of my heart matters more to Him than my outward appearance. A meek and quiet spirit are of great price to Him.

Obedience is better than sacrifice makes so much sense because sin is disobeying God, and if not for humanity's disobedience from the start, there never would have been a need for sacrifice.

God is a God Who wants us to have a malleable heart that lets Him mold our weaknesses. Saul was driven by fear of others and lied and rationalized his disobedience by using the plunder as sacrifice. But as Keith Green sang “To obey is better than David, however, acknowledged his weakness and knew that the Lord would give him victory, not by wearing Saul’s armor, but going to battle “in the name of the Lord.” Malcom Gladwell gets this partly right in his 2009 New Yorker that became his bestseller, “David and Goliath”-how underdogs win when they embrace their weaknesses. The Lord wants me to embrace Him in my weakness, obey Him, and never fear.

1 Samuel 17:45-47 contains some of the most powerful declarations of faith by David. Total Faith in God. Read those statements again and meditate on it. #HeIsWhereTheJoyIs

A very sobering message in this video. Saul had every opportunity to prove that he was worthy of leading Israel, yet he chose partial disobedience-or selective obedience-over complete obedience. It was only a matter of time before God's, and Samuel's, patience, ran out as it was with Saul's excuses, and God had no choice but to reject Saul as the king of Israel. 1 Samuel 15:22 really and truly drove home the point that "obedience is better than sacrifice." I absolutely hated it when saul said " The LORD your God ". Samuel's probably like " Dude we have the same God... "

I have a question about something you didn't address in your commentary. At the end of chapter 17, Saul asks Abner who the young man is that killed Goliath. Even when Abner brings David before Saul, Saul is still asking "whose son are you?" David has been playing the lyre for Saul and he specifically asked Jesse to let David stay in his service. So HOW is it even possible that now he doesn't know who David is?????

My Bible commentary suggested that Saul was either asking more about David's family history OR maybe David played behind a screen or curtain for Saul so he never saw him OR David's appearance changed as he didnt spend all his time with Saul but went back and forth as he attended sheep and matured overtime.
