I've never read the BIble this way and it's so cool to see how the Psalms fit with what was happening in David's life at the time. David's faith, in the face of a deranged and powerful madman who wanted him dead, is a powerful reminder to hold tight to God when we are afraid.

I think my favorite part of the story is how God turns assassins into prophets. These men set out to kill David and God just says, Nope, you will prophesy instead.

Too many God shots in Psalm 59. God is our rescuer. God is our protector. God is our Savior. God is our helper. God is God of Heaven’s Armies. God is God of Israel. God is our Judge. God is Just and Justice. God is our strength. God is our fortress. God is our support. God is most powerful. God is our shield. God is the destroyer of the wicked. God is our refuge. God is our place of safety. Good loves us unfailingly. That is 17 descriptors of who God is

I used to wonder when reading stuff like Richard Wutmbrands "Tortured for Christ" how God really saw the people who lied to protect the Jews. One line I will never forget is when one of them who has to lie to protect a life, but knew that others were "judging" those who lied for any reason, said "it's a curious thing to live in a place where one doesn't have to worry about both lying and honor". Meaning - how nice it would be to be in a position where you didn't even have to think about the right and wrong of lying. But to hear even here that God is more concerned with FAITHFULNESS, reminds me that God's mercy also trumps judgment. And, that God's laughter is meant to be a comfort to His kids - not as in "Hes happy to see anyone perish" but as "He just knows NO ONE will succeed against Him." I love TLC'S humor, too!

Saul is not in his right mind, and God allows for this to happen because His spirit left him. This story reminds me that God orchestrates our steps. Saul repeatedly tried to kill David, but God protected him. Saul would send David to fight against the Philistines, hoping he would be killed in the battle. But, the Lord gave him victory. Saul tried to pin David to a wall multiple times with a spear, but David was able to escape. Saul thought he could create a distraction by giving his daughter Michal to David in marriage. But Michal loved David. David escaped to Samuel's town, and when Saul found out, he sent people to kill him, but they ended up prophesying! The Lord even saw fit to knit the heart of Jonathan, Saul's son, with David. Their friendship is so sweet. I love that we ended today's reading in Psalm. For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face. (Psalm 11:7) But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love. (Psalm 59:16‭-‬17)

Day 103: God is the God of Powerful Song. When David fears for his life, God inspires him to sing “I will sing about your power. Each morning, I will sing with joy about your unfailing love” (Ps 59:16). He is David’s “place of safety,” his “refuge,” his “Strength” (Ps 59:17). And songs are powerful: it’s when Saul hears the women sing David’s praises that he begins to be jealous (1 Sam 18:7). When Saul sends troops to capture David from Samuel, they and he are overwhelmed with God’s Spirit and praise God instead (1 Sam 19:24). Today, when we see that “the foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?” (Ps 11:3), we can sing “I know the battle is yours.”

TWICE an evil spirit from God comes on Saul Then, Saul tries to kill David. Saul's son Jonathan saves David so David is able to escape and not die. Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David but had departed from Saul. Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days. 1 Samuel 18:12‭, ‬29 But an evil spirit from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre, Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape. 1 Samuel 19:9‭-‬10 NIV Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.’ ” Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town. 1 Samuel 20:42 NIV

I thought it was interesting that Saul sent David out to fight the Philistines in Chapter 18, hoping they would kill him for him. It seems like David knew what was going on because later he took a page from Saul's book and used the same method after he sinned with Bathsheba to try to kill Uzziah. I need to make sure I am in lockstep with God and seeking His ways, rather than trying to make plans that don't include Him.

I have a question about Saul calling David, the son of Jesse, throughout. What is the throughout? I read that Saul calls David by his name in 1 Samuel 26:17. In fact, Saul calls David, my son. Please clarify this for me. Thanks!
@AnchoredinHIM
@AnchoredinHIM 8 ай бұрын
From what I read and understand, once Saul feels so angry with David, he refers to David as "The Son of Jesse" when talking about him or inquiring of him. I see this in my NKJV Bible. As far as 26:17 goes, this is where Saul is trying to lure David, sweet talk him to get him to come out to kill him. Saul realizes his own sin and how David spared his life. This is where he becomes grateful for David not taking his life and realizes he was foolish. His anger toward David changed to a thankful heart which is why his label for him changed from "Son of Jesse" to "My Son David." I'm no expert, so tell me where I've errored. However, this is what I understand. :) Blessings to you, and may we continue to seek His word and fall deeper into relationship with Him!

I don't know. I'm kinda of disturbed about the fact that there was an idol in David's house that Michal was able to use in David's escape. An idol in David's house, of all people! And I'm wondering what all the Spirit of God coming over Saul and him prophsying in front of Samuel naked is about. Just what does all that mean? It sounds demonic to me yet it says it comes from God. What am I missing?

Yes, disturbing. The idol caught my eye, too. I think all of it shows they aren't perfect. They're still not fully obedient but selectively so. We just read previously that they wanted a king and were rejecting God as their king. He didn't like it, and this is what He has to work with, I guess.

Why does in the Bible say “evil Spirit from God” when mentioning the demon that tormented Saul?
@karenevans6035
@karenevans6035 8 ай бұрын
After David killed Goliath he is a hero. We see Saul’s son Jonathan impressed with David. Jonathan gives David gifts to honor him. The local women credit David with winning the war instead of the king. Saul feels threatened and demonically inspired. He tries to kill David twice while David played music for him. These are the first two times of 16 times in which he will try to kill David. Saul has no concern for David or God’s glory. Saul is fearful and is only concerned with seeking himself. Self focus is like fertilizer on fear. Saul tries to kill David again by sending him to war. That doesn’t work. Then Saul tries to lure David into marrying his daughter Michal in hopes she would lead him astray into pagan worship. David was supposed to have married her after killing Goliath but Saul took back that promise. Saul tries to get Jonathan and his servants to kill David. Jonathan reasons with Saul against that. Saul lies and agrees to not kill David. Saul asks for David to come back and play music for him. Saul tries to kill him by throwing his spear at him. David runs and Saul sends assassins to his house. Michal lies for him when she sees David’s life is threatened again. Michal lies but to protect a life. We see this with the Hebrew midwives when they were told to kill the babies. We see Rahab lie when she hid the Israelite spies. We see scripture praise the people who live by faith and aim to be honorable to God. David runs to Samuel’s house. Saul and his assassins chase David but they are sidetracked by praise and prophecy. God is sovereign even over the efforts of an evil king. Saul is humbled and leaves to see Jonathan. The next day Saul attempts to murder his own son Jonathan. Jonathan now knows that Saul does indeed wish to kill David. Jonathan helps David escape. They pledge loyalty to each other. We read 2 psalms written by David. We see that David trusts God and doesn’t doubt His love for Him despite what he is enduring. In Psalm 59 David recounts God’s faithfulness. This helps to remind him of who God was and who God will continue to be in the future. He preaches the truth to Himself In Psalm 59 we see God laughing at his enemies. This is meant to be a comfort to his kids. God’s laughter serves as a reminder that God’s enemies are already defeated. God protects us and defends His name. We see that God laughs. Look at when he used a donkey to talk to Baalam. God has jokes. God is victorious, protective and full of joy.

It's always fascinated me that Saul was pleased that his daughter Michal loved David because he felt she would be a snare to him. That suggests to me that he knew his daughter, that she was a royal wench and would cause David trouble. I question the comment that Saul tried to kill Jonathan. I think he threw the spear at David's empty chair to demonstrate his hatred of him.

According to scripture, Saul tried to give his daughter Merab to David first, not Michal. You stated he had originally put off giving Michal to David. You never mention Merab, who was given to someone else since David said he wasn't worthy to be the king's son in law.

Hey! That’s a good question! Looking into the original Hebrew text we see that this specific word for Love (a-he-bow) here, is used 4 other times in the bible , the first appearing in Genesis 44:20. In each passage it is speaking about the love a father has for their child. In Genesis 44:20 it is says, (speaking about Jacob and his love for Benjamin, the only remaining son of his beloved wife Rachel.) “And we responded, ‘Yes my lord, we have a father who is an old man , and his youngest son is a child of his old age. His full brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him very much.” Another example of this specific word is in 2 Sam. 12:24 where it talks about God’s love for the child Solomon. We also know from the text that Jonathon is probably older than David. We may can draw the conclusion that they have a special and close friendship and also that Jonathan loves David the way you love your own child, wanting what is best for them and loving them even more that you love yourself. I hope this helps you!
