After a few years of using a ZPacks cuban fiber Solplex, I trashed that sucker for a freestanding tent for EXACTLY these reasons. Someone else mentioned using rocks - well that’s not always an option either. I loved my Solplex but at the end of the day, the extra weight was worth it. As you guys age, you’ll find that a few extra pounds will drastically improve your QOL on the trail. Get a cuban fiber Big Agnes and don’t look back. ❤

Congratulations 🥳 on 1400! Such a HUGE accomplishment 🎉 It’s been ridiculously hot and humid here in the Toronto area of Ontario Canada 🇨🇦. Humidex of 40+ Celsius. I can’t imagine hiking the miles you’ve been hiking in that and hotter. Yuck! Glad you were able to get off trail and into a cool hotel!

You are doing the right thing. You have reached heat exhaustion and headed for heatstroke. Listen to your body and don't be hardheaded. You did what you could do and that's enough.

Too hot to hike for sure. I hate that reroute. The vintage section is better but on busy weekends that road is extremely dangerous to cross. They finally rerouted because a hiker was hit and killed a few years ago. We took the vintage as well. Good choice to get off and into the AC.

I'm sure you probably know this, but you can use rocks rather than stakes (or in combination) to hold your lines taut. Old Boy Scout trick.

May have asked this question but if the Hostels didn't show up do you think you would still be out there? Free Standing Tent ---Mine weighs in at 2:14 ish Kelty 2 person... Wouldn't hold up to a thru hike but section hiking ...perfect...

We also wouldn’t be covering anywhere near the miles we have without them. When you hike all day through brutal heat, then lay awake all night sweating, you can’t recover. So your miles just fall off. But we would definitely still be out here either way.
