Day 2 As A Tourist In Somalia...Busy Day Exploring Mogadishu!

Mogadishu is definitely an experience! There were ups and downs and little surprises that made this a super interesting day of exploring a city that to the Western world is unknown and mysterious. I hope you enjoy getting a little glimpse of what life in Mogadishu is like in this video!

First of all Welcome to Somalia. Secondly, Alshabaab are not in Mogadishu, they are thousands of miles away hiding in a hole in the countryside from the SNA and their partners. Thirdly, i have been Mogadishu several times never heard of a green zone, that was back in the 90’s but now most of Mogadishu have so many checkpoints in every corner that there hasnt been any bombings in more than a year ( I remember it used to be a daily occurrence), kudus to police and NISA. Most people stare in Mogadishu stare because of curiosity (probably a culture thing) but the attention you got in the fish market was probably because you are walking around with armed men (armed men who are not police are associated with trouble). Lastly glad you visited and hope next time you come back you wont need gun men (Security is gradually improving). Also 950 for an apartment is a rip off, most locals rent similar apartment for 350-450 dollars.

@@megseverywhere I think it's safer to have local people with you in Mogadishu, perhaps with concealed weapons, but this type of armed men would attract attention anywhere, I don't think security is that bad In central Mogadishu. I was in NYC some time ago and we were swamped by heavily armed security personnel that created a lot of tension on the street, I later realized they were moving expensive art from a museum. So its the same everywhere, if you have a lot of armed guard you will get eyeballs. Also your hired guards will definitely tell you whatever pays their line of work, but overall its good to have locals with you if you a Westerner traveling in Somalia.. its easier a bit if you are Middle Eastern or have Muslim background.

I remember being a kid in the 80s and my aunt taking me to this Hamarweyne market with tiny alleys, they were just like that but A LOT cleaner and buildings were in much better shape, women covered less, it was a lot more regulated and organized city, the war has taken it to a terrible place, but at least it's getting better than it was in 90s and early 2000s when it was a no go zone, hopefully in the next decade things return to normal.

I think the tour guy was even new to Mogadisho. Why did they take them urubo instead of liido 🌊a? Do they really need to record the garbage? The tourists are marketers; they are selling the image, so they deserve to get the coolest place rather than Urubo, where most visitors are drug users who need to take time to that place. Take a trip to Liido, Jazeera, Abaydhahan, Darusalam, etc.
