The Rocky Mountaineer was on my parents bucket list. However after my mom’s passing in 2013, I was still intent on taking my dad for his birthday. Unfortunately we lost him tragically in 2020. Still on my to-do list but sad that they never got to experience it. Life is short. So glad that you took your dad @DownieLive

Did you know that this route almost never happened? That’s right. It came about due to one person stubbornness. At first the kicking horse pass was a 6 1/2% grade. East bound trains made it up but the problem was the westbound train. Only one out of every 3 trains made it down without a disaster derailing. It got bad enough that the Canadian government abandoned the project. However one guy brought the land and higher his own crew. He said why not go inside the mountain. And the spiral tunnels were built. Here’s the hidden part of the story. Canada had given up on that pass and was routing it through usa. So to prove a route he tried to take a cargo train but was caught. I got to the point were it was delaying the trains big time so a challenge happened. He was given an oil train while another train without oil cars. First one to Vancouver wins and become the main line. To the engineer of the no oil train was behind the person. The oil train arrive just 3 minutes before the other train. There was a race back to calegry and yet this time the person was there 10 minutes ahead.

I just came across this program of a young man and his dad travelling over the Rockies via train. Many years ago, when I was the age of that young man, I travelled the same route. Watching it brought back so many wonderful memories. Now, I'm the age of his father and it brought a big smile to my face to see the close relation they enjoy. Again, it reminded me so much of how close my son and I are. I live in Toronto and I'll be taking the train to London to be with my son and family this Christmas. Thank you for sparking those happy memories. I'm looking forward to being with you as you explore the rest of our beautiful nation. Leo

I found your channel because my 14 year old daughter and I have a someday plan of taking a train through the Rockies. We live in Ontario and I got the chance to go cross country as a kid by train and drive with my family and even Greyhound bus. And that was the best gift I ever got from my parents. The chance to see this amazing country. I am struggling with some health things, both physical and mental. But one thing that keeps me looking forward is the chance to share the country with my daughter. We went east already and when I feel better we will go west. And I want to say thanks for inspiring us and showing us how wonderful it will be.

Prior to the 1909 Spiral Tunnels, the CP mainline negotiated what was called 'The Big Hill.' Elderly members of my family shared stories of being on a passenger train going west down the Big Hill and they would have Canadian Pacific's most powerful locomotives operating in reverse to prevent the passenger train from coasting at a fast speed out of control down the steep grade. The Trans Canada Highway now follows some of the steep route where the tracks used to be....Great video...I've done that trip and want to do it again...cheers!!!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Downie. What a beautiful area to travel through by train; and a very beautiful train to boot! I can't wait to see your videos on your multi-province trip through Canada.

My wife and I saw The Rocky Mountaineer featured on a tv show called Mighty Trains. Luxurious is an understatement. I’m so glad u had the chance to spend all that time with ur dad. We had a chance to c Canada by RV quite a few years ago. It’s a beautiful country. I lost my dad in 2016 and my mother just 2 weeks ago. But the memories r still there. I plan on seeing Canada soon when my wife and I get an rv of our own and head out. Love, love, love ur videos. Urs is the only train channel I subscribe to. Keep making ur videos and I’ll keep watching. Btw, we have friends living in Manitoba that we plan on seeing soon. Thx again. Wish ur dad a happy bday from us.

A perfect way to combine your love and appreciation for your father with your love and appreciation of travel. It is apparent to me as a parent myself, that your father has done a proper job of raising you and It's hard to imagine a more fitting way to thank him for his parentage and sacrifices along the way. You've earned a like and a new subscriber. Happy travels!

Neat to see the trip from 3 Valley Gap to Banff. I’ve driven that portion my whole life going to the Okanagan to visit grandparents, or now that I live there, going to AB to visit family. Pretty cool perspective to see it from the train. I’ve always wanted to take the Rocky Mountaineer, I didn’t realize it went through the spiral tunnels!

I took this train and Michael failed to mention HOW MANY PEOPKE WAVE TO THE TRAIN. It’s like the entire country got some memo. On Shuswap lake, there was someone waterskiing and waving! Kids at the skate park, people in the car waiting for the train to pass, EVERYBODY! Was a really cool touch. It’s a pricey trip but I think the price point is spot on. I’m a Canadian who lives in Vancouver and I was still blow away! Also, the servers basically never deny any request for food or drink. As long as they had it, you can get it!

That was so great that your friends and you were able to see each other no matter how brief! I understand I live in Georgia US and my best friend moved to Indiana US 10 years ago and I miss him and his family terribly!😢
