Natsya, 20th day here. The reason i started learning russian is the love for literature. I am dying to read Anna Karenina in Russian itself. I dream of reading tolstoy, dostoevsky, pushkin & chekov. Today i read the first line in Anna Karenina and I was in tears when i was able to figure out the meaning and understand from the familiarity of the words we learn here! Im in tears! Thank you so much, hopefully i will achieve my dream before i am too old!

I've never understood why there is a soft sign in the inflectionary stem of пить. I mean the soft sign is to palatalize a preceding consonant, but the vowel letters of the ending also soften the consonant. Why then would you insert an extra soft sign into the word? Maybe there are etymological reasons, but it seems so meaningless and useless that I keep forgetting it in writing. 🙃 Anyway, thanks again для эти прекрасные уроки 😊

Is the word "есть" required when we ask someone "do you have?" / "у вас есть?" I ask because it's usually part of the phrase but then I also see times (like around 18:35 in the video) when you just ask "у вас" without using the word "есть". Thank you!

If you watch Nastya's lesson from Day 17, she explains this. I think she mentions it in the Dialogue section of the lesson, then there is a further example in the Short Story section. Basically, 'есть' is omitted when referring to something abstract whereas for something tangible you include the 'есть'. The examples in the lesson will make this clear.
