Day 21: Into Grants, New Mexico / CDT 2024

I intend to hike the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in 2024 and will vlog my experience. Follow me under "Old Man and the CDT."
I am Mike Current, 61-years-old, and retired military. I served for over 30 years in the US Army.
After retirement, I opened two small businesses. But after a few years, I sold both businesses because they were taking time away from pursuing personal goals, like hiking and sailing.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2020 and Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2022. I vlogged (video journaled) my experiences under "Old Man and the PCT" and "Old Man and the AT", respectively.
I sailed around the Chesapeake Bay in my Tayana 37 sailboat over the summer of 2023 and vlogged the experience under the KZbin channel "Old Man and the Sea."

I realize that the CDT is the newest of the 3 major trails in the USA and hope that in the future they can greatly reduce the "road walks" which are no hard on our feet and knees. Thanks for making the most of them in your videos.

Mt Taylor Coffee, near the hostel was very good, and great people. Hiking up Mt Taylor (Mt Taylor Alternate) was rewarding, north-side had snow weeks ago but probably should cleared by now. Enjoy the zeros....

Glad you made it across the lava flow safely. The views today were nice. The cliffs and the rock formations were really pretty. Glad you're gonna take a bit of a break there. Need to rest those feet after that 22 mile road walk. Bet that draft tasted good and refreshing. Take care. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

I take it that road walking is brutal cause of the hard surface? Wouldn't the lava areas be tougher on shoes and less smooth walking ??

I’ve been watching your videos since your 1st PCT Video & I really really appreciate the detailed information you provide. How many miles per hour would you say you average on a road walk, 3 or 4 mph maybe?

3 mph on road, but it's hard on the legs. Easier to walk a trail.
