Day 26 - Hoof Care WAKE UP CALL! ⏰ (the BLIND leading the BLIND!) 🙈
In this show we talk more about incorrect hoof care, chopping off the toes and reducing that surface area.
But first Garry demonstrates how to identify sidebone and ringbone in horses, offering valuable insights into recognising these conditions.
He then delves into zoopharmacognosy, emphasising the importance of listening to the horse and understanding its needs.
We discuss the remarkable ability of animals to self-select and how this plays a role in their well-being.
We also address what you should do if you encounter conflicting information or confusion - don't hesitate to bring it up for discussion. Open dialogue helps clear up misunderstandings.
Then we get onto addressing the impact of trimming on hoof surface area, we highlight the significance of maintaining the toe pillar for proper support.
Misconceptions about hooves are widespread, particularly regarding the constant removal of the toe wall and its detrimental effects on P3.
Lastly, we touch upon the lack of emphasis on natural hoof care in veterinary education, shedding light on areas where improvements can be made.

Thanks for info on heel compaction. Wondered what i was looking at when one side of frog that had been “eaten away” by abscess and thrush just “filled in” with hard waxy material. I thought it was bar even though I’ve been diligent about keeping bar in check. I used the other side of the heel as a guide and just took the tough stuff and heel down to the same level as the good side. I think i’m doing the right thing. Will keep at it every week until i see something that’s chalky.

Yes keep doing as much as you can and the hooves will begin to let go of the compaction bit by bit. 👍

Thank you for sharing. How do you feel about unloading the quarters? So many people and farriers saying take the toe take the toe.

The natural foot shape has arches at the quarters, so they are naturally passive. 👍
