So I'm having a 'to clip or not to clip' discussion going on with a friend and I'd love to hear your stance on it. We've both got shetland ponies, which are notorious for having this immense winter coat. They won't ever get cold if you don't clip them, that's for sure. But especially around october they'll be sweating just from the outside temperature alone, as they'll be well on their way putting on their winter coat but the temperatures are usually still pretty warm. My friend does a lot of driving with them, so she'll clip their chest and neck to help them manage the heat. In winter it'll hardly get below -5C, so usually she doesn't rug them though and they don't seem to get cold. Mine are still too young to be in work, so I haven't really thought about it until now. I'd rather go easy on the training in these times as I wouldn't want to ruin their amazing coats for when the weather does get worse. It also protects them from the wind and rain, which we tend get here a lot. She says it doesn't matter because she only clips the underside of the chest and neck area, and they put on weight faster than you can say 'grass' if you put them out of work, so she doesn't want to halt their training. Would clipping really be beneficial for them? What are possible up and downsides? And is there a better or worse time of year to clip them when thinking about coat development?

The digital cushion can be assessed by looking at the back of the foot, above the hairline. If there's a deep dent which feels hard when you press, the cushion is atrophied for sure. If there's a slight dent and it's a bit squishy when you push on it, it's probably in good shape. It depends less on the horse's age and much more on how much it moves around. Even an old horse can regenerate healthy cushion there if it gets more exercise on comfortable feet. For those whose hoof-care specialist removes too much frog, don't criticize their technique or training. Perhaps tell them you want to run an experiment and describe how little you want taken off and for how many trims. Take before-during-after photos of the foot, especially the back as it's on the ground, and the underside. Get video of its gait ditto. Then share the results! I've noticed a pattern in our horses, that I'll see white, powdery stuff (fungus) in their frog, and that is later followed by the black, smelly goo (bacteria). Occasionally they co-exist, but the white always comes first. If the fungus is treated as soon as it's seen, does that keep the bacteria from moving in? Also, when the infection is in the callus of the frog, should it be exposed (by trimming) so it can be treated? Lindsay, what about pro-biotics to treat thrush? I know that treating candida with probiotics (kombucha, topical and eaten yogurt) is very effective. I once ran across a reference to a specific Japanese probiotic meant to be added to houseplant soil, which someone used on their horses with near-permanent thrush problems and on the turnout area, and they claimed it cured the problem within a couple weeks, and they reapply whenever a horse shows signs of thrush again.

It would be really useful if you showed a real hoof as well as the drawing as it would be easier to understand the various parts of the hoof and the different types of flare. Many people like me are not sure what is the white line, the inner hoof wall, the outer hoof wall, the sole plane etc. When I look at my horse's sole these areas are not clear to me.

It's the best class I've ever seen. It really is a sensational contribution to horse care. They don't teach that in universities. I would love to know more about laminitis with your ideas. Thank you so much. And could you talk about the horseshoes? What do you think about the iron horseshoes and the new ones that are made of plastic material and if it is no longer necessary to nail? Greetings from Argentina. Thank you

Hi, I hope you are able to let me know if this is a good idea... I have the farrier coming out Monday, he's a good farrier and trims well. After the trim I want to transition to me maintaining the hooves. I was wondering if after the trim I could maybe rasp the hooves every few days to mimic walking on rough surfaces and then hopefully keep the hoof wall maintained without needing to trim. Let me know what you think please

I'm a little late to the party here, but I'm going to disagree re the workload a horse with sidebone can do. I've owned my boy for 13yrs, he's been barefoot for 12yrs. He is pigeon toed and has a definite very obvious twist to his near fore. He was xrayed in 2016 and he has pretty substantial sidebone. Particularly on the near fore. Much worse than the image you've used as an example. He was re xrayed in 2023 and the sidebone is exactly the same. No worse. In that time and still currently he has been in full work. Hacking, galloping, jumping. Dressage up to elementary, eventing up to BE90. His preferred surfaces/going is firm. He has well developed digital cushions all round. His foot balance is something I have to keep on top of, but he has never had any foot related lameness issues in my 13yrs of owning him. 😊
@lindsaysetchell
@lindsaysetchell 10 күн бұрын
That's great news, as long as you have removed the cause of the sidebone and it is not getting worse, then you have to be guided by your horse :)

What about NPA? Low heels? How can you trim to improve that?
@lindsaysetchell
@lindsaysetchell 10 күн бұрын
It's all about balance. No horse should have an NPA, it was caused by incorrect hoof care coupled with incorrect balance.
@sahrafurrer7475
@sahrafurrer7475 16 күн бұрын
Sorry but lots of horses are saved and cured with chopped off toes, it's all about taking down the heels! It's not just per se a bad idea to chop of the toe, you also nedd to knoe how far you can go.
@lindsaysetchell
@lindsaysetchell 10 күн бұрын
It is interesting that you should say that, because the amount of horses that are harmed by removing the toe, which then goes on to affect balance, and then goes on further to cause harm to the sole and P3, as well as other issues such as reduced feedback and decreased growth rates, proves every single time that the 'cure' you speak of wasn't really a cure at all.

We had one that foundered last fall. Within 10 days, we saw rotation increase from 8 degrees to 15 degrees. No farrier involvement. Heels were low to the hsp. What are your thoughts on that scenario? The rotation was not ‘caused’ by the farrier trying to let heels grow. It happened within the foot in 10 days….

We'd very much like to see the x-rays, can you message us please on Facebook?
@ethanheyne
@ethanheyne 2 күн бұрын
Do you have x-rays taken after that? Perhaps inflammation can cause the pedal bone to move away from the hoof wall and toward the softer, more compressible tissue. I wonder whether the pedal bone would move back toward its original position after the inflammation subsided.

My analogy…. To a horses high heels & cutting off the toes. Is same as woman wearing spike high heels everyday…. Their feet get deformed & hurt tremendously…. Hence hammer toes. You make this so easy to understand!!! I’ve shared this with a lady who has a laminitis horse & she scoffed at me & said. Her vet recommended this way. I did try & tell her but you’ve been dealing with laminitis for years

Diet change is first. Assuming the pictures and x rays or radiography is pre trim. One question? How long in-between trims? What I gathered was trimming was the cause of the laminitis? Or the reason why it has not been remedied. Diet. Change the diet. Not rocket science
@lindsaysetchell
@lindsaysetchell 10 күн бұрын
Diet, management and trimming are paramount in making sure the horse stays healthy all round, but incorrect hoof care is rife and is often misdiagnosed as laminitis caused by diet.

Grass doesn’t cause laminitis, but it doesn’t help it either. As I’m sure you know, It’s most common in older horses, even more so ones with cushings or EMS. Added unneeded grain is typically the culprit in causing laminitis, though there are several others ways, giving them more sugars than are needed. So in that aspect you’re correct, grass doesn’t cause it. BUT, it is still sugar that we want them taken off of until the condition is resolved, because grass does have sugars.
