Day 3 with the ‪@ranchworx‬ Pasture Aerator - we chose to aerate some of the weediest parts of our Creek Farm, where we rotational graze our cow calf pairs. It was our hardest most compacted ground.
After ruling out that our Hay Fields would best be suited to aerate come spring 2022 I got busy!
I ran the 6145M at about 9mph, 1500 rpms - this machine is easy to use - easy to hook up - there is no PTO / it's ground driven - only using 1 hydraulic to raise and lower the aerator on turns.
Watch as the ground compaction is broken up just after one pass through the ground with the aerator!

You did something that most farm tubes haven't done. Usually its the dad teaching the daughters how to do things with a tractor. You broke the mold of the Mom teaching the son how to operate the aerator.

Kayla and Jason are both great parents. You can always judge parents by the actions of the children. Both of their kids are awesome and extremely respectful. I enjoyed being with the whole family and look forward to returning in the spring.

It's good seeing you putting your son in the driver's seat in the tractor. I could tell it wasn't his first time driving the tractor... I know I thought it was great when I got to drive the tractor. BUT by the end of fall I wished I had never learned how to drive it and work the fields. Setting on that old Farmall tractor for 8&9 hours a day out in the hot N/E Missouri sun with all the red dust hitting you in the face all day wasn't much fun. We didn't have cabs on our tractors back in the 60's. It was your wide brimmed hat that kept the sun off your head. The best part was at the end of the day we'd jump into the pond to wash off all the dust and grim you had collected on you all day it was so refreshing. That aerator looks like it's going to benefit your pasture a great deal. Come spring it will be very interesting to see the growth of the grass...

Absolutely!! The 6" blades slice through the surface cutting the roots and shattering the soil beneath. This allows rain to percolate and the roots to grow deeper. A deeper root structure equals a larger, healthier, and more drought tolerant plant.

Most interesting set of videos about this tool and using the soil probe and the special pressure testing is a clear indicator of where it might be best employed for optimum results. Clearly soil conditions (which is mainly about moisture content) - too dry and it is unlikely to penetrate deep enough, too wet and it is likely to cause a mess and have tractor ruts left behind. I also like that it does not dig up rocks and that the barrel is smooth and so flattens things such as mole hills or other heaps of soil or possibly frost heave in the spring.

RanchWorx Aerators work best in dry soil conditions. The drier, the better. Damp ground doesn't fracture. If you would like more detailed information, my contact info is in the video.

we ran a flail mower over a field with weeds and crap grass, ran a pasture aerator over it then overseeded. WOW what a difference

Having being a kid growing up on a farm, it terrifies me when I see your dog get so close to the tractor. I have seen too many dogs run over on the farm from doing that. Funny how some memories never leave you and, I am 68 now.

Kayla, what is the white hopper or box on the top of the aerator, and what is the depth of penetration and is this variable also. Interesting that the benefits of this machine for future growth and health of the pastures.

The hopper on the back is a 9.6 bushel hydraulic seeder. The blade depth is adjusted by filling the drum with water. The unit has 6" blades and you want them to go in approximately 3". This focuses the entire weight of the machine on the blades allows for maximum fracturing of the soil below.

The unit we used for the demo was a RanchWorx 1036SB. We filled the drum about 50%. The amount of water needed varies on the compaction of your soil. You need to get 3” of the blade in the ground for the best results.

Nice video! How long will you wait to put cows back on the pastures? Would the cows walking on loose dirt lead to more compaction?

Any animal or equipment traffic will re-compact the soil. It is best to aerate at least twice per year. Early spring to loosen up the soil and stimulate root growth and late fall to open it up and allow all of the winter moisture to percolate. The little ones can always find a fun spot, So instead of the double roller unit if you change direction and went over field again would it achieve same results? but fuel wise would it be cost affected.

Our RanchWorx Aerator tandem units are mainly used for massive brush management. The single drum models are engineered for pasture aeration. It is not necessary to cover the ground twice. A single pass in the spring and fall, with a correctly weighted machine, will greatly increase your forage production.

Being as we don't have any cows therefore we don't have any pasture..... But Hybrid Bermuda grass prefers soil more toward the sandy side..... We run an Industrius America Aerator over our hay fields....every March before the it starts to green up... Herbicides and fertilizer are applied before.....The knives are about 8in long... The holes also catch an hold water.....North Texas Hay used one.....

Spike/Tine aerators that you described do punch a hole that catches and holds water. That will definitely green up your grass for a short time. RanchWorx aerators, like the one in Kayla's videos, cut a slice in the ground. The robust design and added water weight fracture the ground beneath the blade. This loosens the soil allowing moisture and nutrients to percolate deeper. We are in it for long term plant health by increasing root growth.

Most of the applications I see using blade type machines are reclaiming land....... We do not use the punch for weed control.... One of our 90 acre fields has been in Bermuda for over 25 years... and untill 2 years ago had never been punched..... And the year before averaged over 10 4x5 bales per acre with a 45 day no rain on 1- 42 day growing cycle...

We do sell a lot of units that are used for brush control/land reclamation. But the majority of what is produced by RanchWorx Aerators is for pasture land and hay production. It sounds like you have some pretty good Bermuda fields. Just think of the production you could achieve with proper aeration. You can never grow too much grass. But I cannot give just one part of the production process to just one aspect......Our variety likes heat, and dry feet.. The sandier the soil the better it grows.....

The total weight of the 1036SB is 6,500lb and can loaded up to 10,000lb by filling the drum with water. There is approximately 1,110lb on each blade that hits the ground. That weight, along with a high speed of travel, deeply fractures the ground as leaves a slice to allow rain to get to the soil below.

6-12mph is best. The faster you go, the harder the blades hit the ground. The 6" blades need around 3" of penetration. It keeps the drum off of the ground and forces all of the weight to be on the blades. The blades hitting so hard causes the fracturing of the subsoil.
