I wish I had this education long ago, and I could have avoided a lot of hardship. I should have connected the need for integrity of order in mind heart soul and body, and avoided the trivial pursuit of romance in tawdry things I thought were no big deal romantic - movies, books, trying to have what was broken and wounded in my life, but it just led to a lack of self-mastery and definitely was never the thing I needed to be content and whole. Every human, Catholic or not, ought to have this education for the betterment of their soul and the health of heart and mind, so important. I am grateful for this year's study.

17:39 - THIS! this needs to be framed on the wall. "Lust indulged becomes a habit. Habit unresisted becomes a necessity." - It shows how small things can become the root of big sins and big problems. Chastity indeed is a must for everyone regardless of the marital status. Another truth of life is that we must control passion so that passion does not control us. Padre, I have overcome acoholism, drug addiction, being an awful human for first half of my life. I found true love and a woman, a woman of God, who said I will walk with this man. Who chose to make my life complete and help me raise my son who is now 20. And dealing with impurity, as I put it; of myself is the single most difficult and constant thing in my confessions for so many years. We should see other people not as objects or things to be used, but people to be loved. Chastity is when the intellect guides our passions, and the will informs us to live a balanced life. Self-mastery is a process. We are all called to Chastity. The virtue of chastity involves the integrity of the person. Your spouse is the legitimate person of romance and do not have a shadow mission! Chastity is a moral virtue a gift from God. Serious sin and serious prayer can't coexist. Thank you Father Mike!❤️🙏❤️ When it comes to taking a personal stand regarding one’s sexual freedom, hook-up culture and peer pressure do not make the choice any easier. Yet choosing chastity is precisely more desirable than these lifestyles because it is a virtue that is centered around the divine, selfless nature of love. Our bodies belong only to God, not ourselves, because the Spirit of God is dwelling in each of us (1 Cor. 6:19). When young people forget the value and importance of their bodies, made in the image and likeness of God, they can fall from a state of grace and use their bodies for pleasure, while associating little meaning to it, either in thought, word, or deed. Saint John Paul II’s teachings on the Theology of the Body helps to tie the concept of chastity and love together since both are interconnected:

Chastity means the positive integration of sexuality within the person. It is a moral virtue, a gift of God, a grace, and a fruit of the Holy Spirit. It involves an apprenticeship in self-mastery of human freedom directed towards self-giving. Fidelity to prayer, self-knowledge, the help of sacraments, the practice of the virtue of temperance, and the practice of asceticism adapted to various situations are some of the means that aid the living of chastity.

We are all called to Chastity as it means the successful integration of sexuality within the person. It's a harmony that guides and governs our passions to treat people aright. Shadow/double mission must be avoided if we are to be really chaste people of integrity. Ethos is being drawn to the good and repelled by the bad. Choose serious prayer when breaking away from serious sin. Don't give up on growing in Chastity even if we fail in the process as it is a moral virtue and a gift from God. ❤ 🙏 😊

November 1, 2023 I am looking for people to please take a moment and pray with me for Souls in Purgatory. Can you help? According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory: Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home, and in my family. Amen. In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)

What if you are just plain single, not a consecrated single person, which I take it means a vowed religious? I am hearing only of the married and those ordained, or am I misunderstanding? I feel a bit as if the category I fit in is never acknowledged.
@dcharles3585 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree! I always imagined I'd marry but 60+ now and it never happened. It's not like I chose to be single; no one ever asked me. People choose marriage or religious life as a vocation but I 'm just...here. People say single persons are important for the church but we don't get much acknowledgement of our particular problems or issues. I live a chaste life but hard to see it as a gift when you wish life had turned out differently. It is more of a cross. Some people don't have food, some poeple have illnesses. I don't have love or physical intimacy. :/ (Sorry don't mean to be a downer. I'm usually pretty happy and upbeat but sometimes it hurts that people just skim over us.)

@@dcharles3585 I am there with you. I have a similar story, and am a similar age. I also tire of the stereotypes of single lay people, such as that we are super volunteers (I'm not, I confess) or do things like run for local office. No, we are not all the same. My "contributions" to the church would draw the notice of exactly no one, yet I am always reading that "we" do this, that, and the next. Not so. Every one of us is unique. Maybe I am misunderstanding, but it sounds like, if you are married, watching Hallmark movies and reading romance novels are sins. Can this be clarified.
@kathywiens9852 Жыл бұрын
I can share from lived experience that partaking in the many "romantically themed" entertainments of movies, shows, books, can create feelings not good for the married couple. Especially for women but also men. Getting taken up in scenes that are created with, most times, with what society has ingrained in us, beautiful people, perfect settings etc. It sets us up to be dissatisfied with our own lives. It may feel nice at the time, and may even spark some romance between us and our spouse. Ultimately though in our real day to day lives we go looking for another fix when our lives aren't like all of the make belief stuff. Like I say I share from experience in more ways than one. It didn't turn out well either. It caused much suffering for many in the end. That also goes for opposite sex friendships in the work place. It's playing with fire and people will get burned badly.
@TrixRN Жыл бұрын
It can lead to dissatisfaction with one’s spouse & life; I know this from experience 😞. It can set up unrealistic expectations which no human can achieve. Much care needs to be taken.
@BogoGog24 Жыл бұрын
I’m wondering the same. But I think the keyword is “legitimate,” as in your spouse is the only “true” source of romance in your life, they can give you true love in a way books and movies can’t because they’re not people. If he truly means we aren’t supposed to engage in anything remotely romantic outside of our spouse, by that logic you couldn’t even watch something as innocent as I Love Lucy due to the depiction of Lucy and Ricky’s marriage in the show. That would be silly. I agree with the commenters above that he likely means if engaging in romantic movies or books warps your view of romance or your marriage so severely you start to become unsatisfied or place unrealistic expectations on your partner, that is when it becomes unhealthy. The whole point of most movies/books/songs is to depict love in a romanticized way because that’s what makes them interesting and engaging. If they were realistic depictions of every day life, they would be boring. That’s why it’s called entertainment. If you take it for just that, and don’t take it as a guide for how romantic life should actually be, I don’t see why we couldn’t still enjoy them. I’ve never heard the church or any priest say we’re not allowed to watch romcoms or read romance novels, provided it’s not overly sexual or anything. At least that’s my 2 cents on it but hoping maybe somebody will clarify.
@dcharles3585 Жыл бұрын
I was also wondering about this. I like a good rom-com or romantic suspense story. I hate horror, murder, war stories, police or medical dramas... I don't find violence and sadness entertaining at all; if I do watch something like that, I dwell on it and am upset for days afterward. I can't fathom how watching things that depict evil and sadness can be okay but watching 'happy' stories is wrong. I don't think you can't make a blanket statement that a certain genre is bad for everyone. I know a lovely couple who have been happily married 50 years and she watches a Hallmark movie every afternoon while she knits. Perhaps the point is that people need to know themselves, what their weaknesses are, and then act accordingly. If you are the kind of person who tends to be dissatisfied with your relationships, then you need to avoid searching for a better alternative in a make-believe world of romantic books or movies. If you find violence upsetting, then don't watch shows about it. Also people need to remember that most movies and books are fiction and even 'reality shows' aren't real. Treat them as entertainment and not a road map for your own life.

Regarding the bit on the unitive nature of the marital act. It is true that force and coercion should never come into play and that either party forcing or coercing the other into the marital act would be gravely sinful, however, it also needs to remember that the word of God in both New Testament scriptures and the magisterium of the Church both command spouses not to deny each other. This is taught in no uncertain terms in Paul's letters and throughout the two thousand years of infallible Church teaching. A spouse who denies their spouse the marital act sins and this sin ought to be confessed. This needs to be handled with care because it does not mean that if a legitimate injury or something is preventing intercourse that either party is sinning in that case. A woman for example will definitely need time to recover after giving birth and the husband would be sinning to demand sex during that time of healing. But on the other hand the women who use sex as a weapon or tool of manipulation against their husband are in similarly grave sin. Unless the couples are taking a fast from intercourse, a fast which the infallible word of God says must be mutually agreed upon to be legitimate, then generally speaking both spouses have an obligation to willingly and lovingly give themselves fully to their spouse when they ask. This is a hard teaching in our present day because everyone jumps in their minds to horror stories that are incredibly rare outside of the many movies they watch that have convinced them horror stories are common, but it is the teaching from God through scripture, tradition, and Church teaching. People really need to not watch so much TV because it really distorts their view of reality. Married couples I known who live this teaching are happy and mutually benefit from it. The traditional family is portrayed invariably as abusive and hellish on TV but in reality they tend to be the happiest homes of all and few homes are more hellish then those who try to live the modern cultural ideals that TV and feminists pretend is paradise.

First of all I appreciate your work on this! It has been really helpful. I'm curious why you start each of these with the phrase "as we journey together to our heavenly home". The Church has always taught in a literal bodily resurrection and a return of Christ to earth uniting heaven and earth in new creation. Having grown up in the evangelical world that phrase sounds like the kind of escapism theology (that we will be raptured and spend eternity in heaven apart from the world) I grew up inundated with. I think the Catholic Church's teaching on bodily resurrection and new creation is so refreshing so I'm confused why you use that phrase. It makes it seem like the end goal is to be disembodied souls in heave, not fully reunited with our resurrection bodies in the new creation.

Where can I find a church that forbids marriage? *"who forbid marriage"* 1 Timothy 4:1-5 ESV - 1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

All doctrine unique to the Catholic church is unnecessary if Christ's sacrifice is complete. If Christ's sacrifice was perfect and he took away all sin past, present, and future than... Penance has no purpose. Purgatory has no point. Absolution is unnecessary. Need I go on? Yes, Christ's sacrifice on the cross is complete and Final. The Bible confirms this repeatedly. Flee this Anti-church. Trust In Christ Alone. Trust in him alone like you would trust a parachute. You can add nothing to a parachute by flapping your arms. Just as you can add nothing to the perfect and finished sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for all of your sins. Do not cheapen the saviors work by adding mans tradition on to it. Find a real church that does not withhold drinking from the cup from its lowly non-priest membership.❤ *Honest questions are welcome.*

None of the full-time ministers, male or female, in the Catholic church are married.

Where can I find a church that is divided into competing and disagreeing denominations ? The unity of Christians was meant to convince the world that Jesus was sent by God. Jesus prayed three times for unity. See John 17:20-23. What does the ever increasing fragmentation of protestantism say to the world ? Protestant......45,000 denominations Catholic...1.4 billion... one faith... Come join the Church Jesus founded, prayed would remain united, and has.

@@yourfriendlyneighborhoodin1559 You’ve been told over & over the Church does not withhold the cup. Stop it. You’re not even Catholic. You’re not getting the body or the blood if you’re not at least part of an ancient apostolic church. Are you?
