As believers, we cling to hope. Philippians‬ ‭3:20‭-‬21 says that ‬"our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself." As we anticipate celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, we are reminded that this world is not our home. John 16: 33 says that we will have trouble in this world, but we can take heart because we have a Risen Savior who overcame the world. So we can rejoice always (Philippians 4: 4). God is our refuge in times of trouble (Psalm 46: 1). We don't have to be anxious about anything, but in prayer, petition and thanksgiving we make our requests to God. And in exchange, He gives us peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4: 6-7). We can cast our cares on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5: 7). He sustains us and will not let us be shaken (Psalm 55: 22). Praise the name of the Lord!

Another rich book- so many great verses. A few that stood out were: Phil 1:27... "conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ"; Phil 2:5, "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus"; and Phil 4:19, "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."

Paul explains the mystery of how we are a new creation (2 Cor 5:17), when our circumstances don’t change (Phil 4:11). It’s our hearts that change, and we think of others as better than ourselves (Phil 2:3-4), and we show God’s love to each other even when it’s painful (Phil 4:2). In this, where there was fear and strife and chaos, He gives peace that we can’t explain (Phil 4:6-7).

Philippians is such a rich book! It is one of my favorites! Reading it today brought back beautiful memories of my father. He quoted it frequently. Philippians 2:5-11 gives a beautiful picture of incarnation. There are many favorite verses in this book.: Phil. 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always! I will say it again-rejoice! ; Phil. 4:11 For I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. ( my Dad’s favorite). The over arching theme of the book is JOY! A form of the word joy appears sixteen times! How wonderful it is that He brings us JOY!

I love TBR. I've learned a lot. One question? How can you totally skip over philippians 2:5-11? To me, that is the essential reason for our faith. Christ Jesus' humility. Making Himself nothing. Enduring the cross. One day "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow." That's the whole gospel in a few sentences. Keep up the good works, "which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Did anybody notice Philippians 4:3? Was the Apostle Paul married? 🤔 The Bible never says for sure. I would be inclined to answer no, based on what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 7:8 - "To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am." Obviously Paul was not married at the time he wrote those particular words, however, it's possible Paul had been married previously, or even that he married later. There are a few reasons to think so. Some are clues within Scripture, while others are extra-biblical. Most interestingly to me, there are early Church Fathers who actually mention Paul's wife! Cement of Alexandria wrote, "Paul does not hesitate, in one of his epistles, to greet his wife, whom he did not take with him, for the sake of his ministry." Now, that seems odd to me. What epistle could he possibly be talking about? Turns out he was referring to Philippians 4:3, where Paul asks his "true companion" (ESV) to help two women in the church of Philippi. Clement explained the situation: These two women's husbands had been deacons in the church, distributing food and such, but they were persecuted and killed, and so the women had decided to continue the work of their husbands. For some reason, though, the two women just didn't get along. Now, normally in the Church in order to avoid any trouble, it's advisable for older women to counsel younger women, as Paul wisely advises a pastor (a male) in another of his letters (Titus). So given that Paul is asking someone to step in and help these two women, it may very well be that this someone was female - a female he calls his true companion. The word is translated "yokefellow" in the KJV, and can also be translated as "wife." In fact, in classical and modern Greek, it only means "spouse." Sooo... although it's probably not very important in the grand scheme of things, I do find it interesting, don't you? These are the little kinds of things we normally fail to notice when reading the Bible, but a more careful study turns up really cool stuff! 😎👍

Kinda like life is out of focus when we see the hopelessness and meaninglessness of this realm. Then Holy Spirit says look closer. See the good potential and restoration He sets before us to declare, to anticipate, and to manifest into our environment. All/what we can do is speak it into existence.
