There is so much in this chapter and it's hard to narrow it down to one thing. What really hit me and stood out the most is I Peter 3:9, "Do not repay evil eith evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing. This is so counter-cultural and against our human nature. It is something we can't do on our own but only by His Spirit. 🙏🏽

Jesus is our high priest. We don’t have to go through anyone to get to Him. The kind of access we have to God is amazing! He has made us priests to reign with Him through all eternity. Jesus lead the way through humility and suffering.

‭1 Peter‬ ‭1:3‭-‬5‬ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Amen. In suffering, remember God. Thats powerful.

Prayer warriors I still need a heavenly touch. I asked last week and I hate to even ask again. I had the clogged ear with an infection. It's all better now...Praise the Lord BUT my ear still has a continuous noise that won't go away. I'm done with my 2 antibiotics. Please whisper a prayer for complete healing and peace in my ears.

Peter calls us to be holy as God is holy. How? By being humble, respectful of even corrupt authorities, and suffering well. Our persecution is nothing compared to Nero’s, who would crucify Peter upside down, but when Christians are persecuted (as they are in many parts of the world), we are to have peace in knowing that our faith is being tested and purified.

1 Peter‬ ‭3:13‭-‬17‬ ‭NLT‬‬ [13] Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? [14] But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. [15] Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. [16] But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. [17] Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!

I feel like we spent a long time reading through the old testament (2-3 verses at a time) and are now rushing through the new testament (4-5 verses at a time). Does anyone know of a good year long program going through the new testament? Thanks!

I recently did a Precept class by Kay Arthur on the book of Matthew that was 13 weeks long. Very in depth and I learned a lot. I’m sure there are other studies out there that are similar. This was a weekly in person study in a church, so lots of people putting their knowledge of the Bible on the discussion table.

I felt the same until I recalled how the old testament books are much longer and take more time to read.

I agree also. I’m looking for a Bible in a year program that includes New Testament with Old Testament readings for next year. I loved this study and have done the Bible in a year several times. It’s so great to get others teachings. You can always increase in learning. That’s my goal each year, to learn more. If anyone has a plan thru youversion that has both Old Testament and New Testament readings along with teaching devotional, please let me know. I’m still searching. Nikki Gumbrel has a very good one if you have never done it.

We are covering much shorter books so it makes sense to read the entire book at one time. I think the recap program is perfect timing.

It's interesting, bc I've always heard that a lot of the audience of this epistle was Jewish believers, bc of the imagery of priesthood, the reference to the prophets, etc.

[19] For God is pleased when, conscious of his will, you patiently endure unjust treatment. [20] Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you. [21] For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. [22] He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. [23] He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. [24] He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. [25] Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.

1 Peter 3:14-22 is one of the stranger passages in the New Testament! 😄 What do the ark, Noah, and imprisoned spirits have to do with baptism? According to Semitic languages expert Dr. Michael Heiser, Peter is thinking about Enoch. Enoch?? Yes! We know that Peter had Enoch on the brain because both Peter and Jude wrote about angels who sinned in the days of Noah (2 Pet. 2:4-5; Jude 6). But one of the things they both mention - angels being imprisoned in the underworld realm of the dead until the end of days - is never talked about in the Old Testament. It is found, however, in the book of 1 Enoch. We need to understand that Peter and the other New Testament writers were familiar with Jewish books outside the Old Testament. One of these books is 1 Enoch. It fills in lots of details about what happened at the time of the flood, especially in the episode of Genesis 6:1-4, where the sons of God (beings we would call angels; Enoch calls them "Watchers") produced children (the Nephilim giants) with human women. Heiser explains, "In the 1 Enoch story, Enoch has a dream where the imprisoned spirits asked him to intercede with God on their behalf. After all, Enoch walked with God - who better to ask God to relent and release them? Enoch did so, but got bad news. God's answer was an emphatic _no._ Enoch then had to deliver that answer - he descended to the spirits in prison. He told them they were still under judgement." "First Peter 3:14-22 has Jesus descending to these same 'spirits in prison' to tell them they were _still defeated,_ despite his crucifixion." "When they saw Jesus enter the place of the dead, they were likely to think their fellow demons had won and they would be getting out of jail soon. Instead, Jesus told them they wouldn't see him for long - he would rise again. It was all part of God's plan." "The crucifixion actually meant victory over every demonic force opposed to God. This victory declaration is why 1 Peter 3:14-22 ends with Jesus risen from the dead and set at the right hand of God - _above all angels, authorities and powers._ The messaging is very deliberate, and has a supernatural view of Genesis 6:1-4 at its core." 🤔 But anyway, what does all this have to do with baptism? Well, Heiser continues, "In Peter's mind, Jesus' death and resurrection - complete with an announcement to the demonic powers of his victory - was symbolized in baptism... _[B]aptism was a loyalty oath and a message to the demonic powers_ (as well as any people present) of just whose side you were on in the spiritual war. Ancient Christians understood this better than we do today." As a matter of fact, it was because of this passage in 1 Peter that early Church baptismal rites included not only a renunciation of Satan, but of Satan's angels as well! Why in some books is Jesus called "Jesus Christ" and in other books (a lot of Paul's books for example) "Christ Jesus?"
