Join me at 12pm in the live chat - today we have a late-March plot harvest and the next round of my SylvaGrow versus PlantGrow peat free compost challenge - and help me answer today's question of the day: is it time to put the multisown scallions/spring onions out?
Welcome to my "12 Days of Easter" series: 12 days, 12 vlogs, all less than 12 minutes, and released at 12 noon (GMT) with a 'premiere' LIVE CHAT.
Expect lots of Spring jobs on the allotment plot and in the home veg garden, including vegetable and flower sowings, planting out potatoes, building structures, trying new tools, taking cuttings, and who knows what else the next two weeks will bring!
Day 4 and I'm up early again before nextdoor's builders arrive - this time we're pricking out and potting on the Atlanta leeks, continuing the compost trial with the Red Baron onions and spring onions, and taking a detour to the plot for a late-March harvest of sprouting kalettes (!), leeks and celeriac.
Mentions: ‪@TheGrowUpChannel‬ - and you can catch me on Danny's live tonight (Thurs 28th March, 7pm) where I will be in prestigious company: ‪@spudsandroses‬ ‪@simplifygardening‬ and ‪@GardenerScott‬ - oh and Danny 😂
Thank you for watching 💕😊

Sadly I missed the live! I was helping to take out a large dead cherry tree...in the pouring rain...and the wind..and the mud!. Washing machine now on....🤣 I'd plant out the spring onions, but then I am in a 'do or die' mood this year! 🤣

Oops I forgot your live but have watched now on catch up. You are doing well with these short lives Kerry, I'm enjoying them. I have all raised beds on my plot because it can flood especially in Winter but also in Summer if we get periods of heavy rain. The raised beds have been a blessing, even when the paths have lying water the beds are fine. No doubt water underneath them but the plant roots are not sitting in soggy ground. I still have leeks and Kalettes growing from last year and as you say something to harvest when there is not much else, ohh I do have some Miners lettuce in my greenhouse which has been growing all Winter, so some more fresh greens to harvest.
@dogontheplot
@dogontheplot 5 ай бұрын
Hi Liz. Glad you are enjoying them. It is keeping me on my toes!! Yes, that's my thinking about the raised beds too as my plot also floods. I have lovely greens in the greenhouse - they look small and sad all winter and then as soon as March hits BOOM they fill out massively and get all lush!

Thank you for the long shot and the diagram of your plot - they did help. I think the confusion stems from your plot site not having fences so it can be difficult to see where one plot ends and another starts.

Great to see the layout of the plot! Any harvest is a great harvest! You have grown it yourself! Like you I love to roast vegetables! Your onions are looking great! I potted on all my onions, including the spring onions just to get them a bit bigger before they go in the ground, but I might be wrong! I am a complete beginner when it comes to veg! 😂😘💕🌸

I didn't think your leeks looked bad. They were standing upright. But I found it reassuring that yours were still so small. It's my first proper attempt at growing leeks and I sowed mine mid February and I've been worried about lack of growth. Mine look very similar to yours so now thinking mine are actually OK. Unless both of us are having problems of course. I was worried the compost I was using wasn't very good. Or maybe it's just leeks grow very slowly when days are short??? I have mine indoors on a windowsill. I've planted some of my spring onions outside a couple of weeks ago. They seem to be doing nicely.
@dogontheplot
@dogontheplot 5 ай бұрын
Ah that's really helpful to know. I find leeks sooooo slow to grow. After all today's comments, I think I'm going to harden off some of the spring onions to go out and keep some under cover to go out in a couple of weeks. Glad to hear yours are going well 👍
@nitelite78
@nitelite78 5 ай бұрын
@@dogontheplot My plan with the leeks is to plant them out end of May. They are supposed to be pencil thick by then. It's hard to envisage that given they look like small chives at the moment but then there's still 8 weeks to go so hopefully they will put on some decent growth by then. Have to wait and see. My onions are looking way better although I did sow them a few weeks earlier plus they are a large variety called 'Exhibition' so I suppose they have been bred to grow fast. Well, it's all a learning experience isn't it?
@dogontheplot

plant your spring onions and then sow some more ready to follow on. Your beds, theyre better if they are the same size then if you make coldframe it fits all of them. Planning drawings I do on powerpoint. I'll tag you on insta with my plans I'm working on ...easier to alter things or duplicate them
@dogontheplot
@dogontheplot 5 ай бұрын
Yes, I do need to remember to succession sow! Yes, I need to make at least one bed the size of that bed frame cover! haha. I did some planning on an online platform last year, but to be honest this was more a drawing of what was already there than a plan - I'm more of a find and space and plonk it in person! Will be interesting to see your plans though!
