Many thanks for your break down of the races thus far, skipper! Your coverage and insights are much appreciated. As a Cup enthusiast since 1964 (Yes...I'm bloody OLD!), I have noticed one factor that seems to be prescient in every America's cup regatta. Inevitably, the fastest boat wins. I think that the brits arrived with a fast boat, but simulation training can only take you so far as opposed to the heat of battle in unpredictable conditions. At the outset of the LV cup finals I honestly believed that the series was a toss up, but as they progressed I think the Brits began sailing BRITTANIA stronger and more effectively using the design of the boat as a measure of gaining better VMG performance. It kind of reminds me of the 2013 edition, where ORACLE assimilated around the performance characteristics of their catamaran to overcome a huge NZ lead before achieving a once in a lifetime comeback to win it all. Hats off to LUNA ROSSA, who arrived with a truly beautiful vessel and an amazing team, but in the end it came down to Beauty and the Beast. The Beast won. My UK bias notwithstanding, I really hope the brits can prevail in the Cup against a VERY strong TEAM NEW ZEALAND. The kiwi boat seems very similar to the Italian boat in the aspects of light air performance and is incredibly agile. This will (hopefully) be an unforgettable match. That being said, I think it would be amazing to see the auld mug return to its birthplace in my lifetime, and honestly feel it would generate a great deal of growth and interest in the America's cup moving forward. Also wishing all the Women's teams the best of luck in their inaugural event. Go get em' ladies!

3 good actions and decisions there in the space of a minute symbolic of the improvement of the performance culture. 1 win the start 2. Tack early realising port was the gaining tack and needed to cover. 3. A perfect (to the cm) Lee bow. GBR sailing and decision making was exceptional. Very proud of GBR. Jimmy Spithill, take a bow, one of the finest sailors and helmsman of my lifetime. I hope to hear him staying in the sport somehow and getting the next generation inspired.

What a marvelous series, unfortunate for the Italian team suffering massive breakdowns which effected their position. We are thrilled the Brits will again defend this epic Cup series against NZ. Thank you so much for bringing us this far and am anticipating a simply top performance to follow.

Great coverage as always Matt, thank you. HUGE CONGRATS to the Brits for a fabulous and well deserved win. Real commiserations to the Italians, worthy adversaries. I had supported INEOS throughout the LV campaign, but my aliegience stops here now that they are up against my countrymen ETNZ. Whomever, wins the Olde Mug, will have set an amazing record...if it's the Kiwis it will be 3 in a row and our 5th win...for the Brits, well, Ben Ainslie has said it all in this regard. My view is that these boats have delivered everything one could want from an Americas Cup series, cutting edge design and the closest match racing I've ever seen. I'm so glad that I'm lucky enough to be here in Barca enjoying the event. The cup racing will be fantastic, nailbiting stuff. Let's all enjoy! 😀

@@BRMCaptChaos ya, the margins on which they closed the door multiple times were so tight, and the fact that they ceded the favoured side on that bottom mark split and still managed to maintain a lead by the cross shows the boat had legs that the team were really starting to unlock.

@TheBardsCorner
@TheBardsCorner Ай бұрын
As a Luna Rossa supporter, I am broken, but to be honest, I would’ve been even more broken if we had won this and then lost (most likely seeing the last performances) 7-0 to ETNZ. Statistically, it is clear that Luna Rossa is a slightly faster boat (in the 2-3%?), but Ineos team just sailed double as good in any race they won, and just as good as LRPP when they lost. The best team won, so congratulations to Ineos! I hope the lessons learnt in the LV final will serve you well in the AC final. The only thing that will take a while to go down is when the race committee suddenly gave the OK to race when LRPP broke the mainsail. No one will ever be able to check, of course, but that was a bit low imho. The sheer fact that things broke so easily, though, is a clear sign of things that were not good on the drawing boards (I need to investigate more about the designer switch and who came in his place, just learned about this yesterday). If the boat can break so easily, when the others did not, it means something needs to be redone. I suggest a LRPP wrapped in 3M tape for the AC38! 😅
@weatheranddarkness
@weatheranddarkness Ай бұрын
It's not clearcut is the thing. Their acceleration curves were different, there were relative dips and peaks in the polars, and Britannia was objectively the better boat to deal with the big waves. Luna Rossa was easier to sail at its limits (or at least the crew made it look easy) and had good chunks of advantage to lean on upwind, and almost always had significantly cleaner sails, which had to be a real advantage in terms of L/D. But the thing is GB was able to close the gap on almost all those points through a combination of adjustments to mechanics, and adjustments to technique.

Congratulations INEOS Britannia on a hard fought & well-deserved victory. Commiserations Luna Rossa - you're a top team and the margins were tight and those two retirements certainly didn't help. It's interesting that what's coming out of the LVC is less about design and inherent boat speed differences & and more about extracting the maximum performance from the boat out of the box. With so much complexity, optimising the foil, sail trim & cant settings, picking the shifts, cleanly executing jibes & tacks and then sailing a tactically clever race has made the difference across a very tight fleet. Next...we await the conditions for the Cup Match - will it be light autumnal airs or the fresh last vestiges of late summer?
@cooldude.1811
@cooldude.1811 Ай бұрын
It was a masterclass in match racing by Britannia, despite what seemed clearly a slightly slower boat (probably due to using a J3 instead of a J2 jib). Sadly, Jimmy could not repeat the 2013 m-Oracle, but all credit to LR for fighting all the way, despite having to give two virtual walkovers due to technical problems. Overall, the end result does not bring out the closeness of the racing between two very evenly matched boats, but Ineos were deserved winners.

I can't help but feel we have seen what happens when one team uses the simulator to model their opposition's behaviour. "Rita" wasn't sailing to win, she was sailing to prevent LR winning. The difference is significant. However, ETNZ now knows a lot more about how the challenger races, and they tend to be rather good at using simulation.

Is it a British thing or just you that you seem embarrassed to win. Basically in this report you said the Luna Rosa were the better team and but for mechanical issues they would have won. Well they did have issues so their boat was not up to it and frankly on the starts Britannia was the more aggressive and way much better. If we had had better judging we would have had more battles at the start. The judging was shocking. Oh and by the way it does seem the Britain has the best boat and the best team and just leave it at that, don’t be magnanimous just say it as it is.
