Nice of you to share your lunch with the fly. This is one of the most beautiful sections on The AT.

Really great views today - and I’m glad you were able to get some water. I was just out again for another weekend and we had some water issues - can be an unnerving feeling. Glad you’re good. 🙂

The Monroe Doctrine was articulated in President James Monroe's seventh annual message to Congress on December 2, 1823. The European powers, according to Monroe, were obligated to respect the Western Hemisphere as the United States' sphere of interest.

Thanks for that info, I always seem to forget Monroe was president in the 1821-24 years.

1824 was a leap year! Also the very first rubber galoshes were introduced to the public. And New Yorks Fifth Avenue opened for business! Breath taking views on the trail this day!

Nice lunch break spot by the spring! Those are some beautiful views up there on Hump Mountain and Roan Mountain. The Roan Highlands are so beautiful! That was a bummer about the spring not having water, though. At least you did find water eventually. As far as 1823, on Dec 2 of that year (which is nowhere close to 0.4, but oh well), James Monroe first introduces the Monroe Doctrine in the State of the Union address, declaring that any European attempts to recolonize the Americas would be considered a hostile act towards the United States. That seemed like a pretty big thing.

Ah yeah Monroe Doctrine was big! Thanks for the education!

The Roan Mountain shelter was a Fire Warden's cabin. It is one of the few four sided shelters on The Trail.

10:03 pm, Sept. 1st 2024! I might be hard pressed to comment, on the spot, about anything notable that happened in 2024! Never mind 1824. Have you thought at all about how you’ll feel when you finish your hike? Besides grateful, proud and accomplished? It’s got to be a culture shock!
@frankmularcikbeyondinvestingАй бұрын
Haha! Ya I have thought about it some but also trying to enjoy the trip still and not think tooo much about the end.

"Nancy Johnson, a pivotal woman in history, crafted the hand-cranked ice cream freezer, forever changing our favorite treat. Her invention, known as the “Artificial Freezer,” was patented in 1843." (A few miles early but too cool, not to share.)
